Meh. Difficult to open for battery installation.

I was looking for a light for visibility while dog walking in Wisconsin winter, without a big investment. Good price but getting this open to install batteries was very difficult. Pictures don't show how hard it was to open. Whatever that tab was supposed to do didn't work. The light is fine, but now the compartment is duct taped closed, because the tab closing no longer holds it closed.

Great budget headlamp has been upgraded in lumens

This headlamp is PERFECT for your average camper or casual shorter trip backpacker. It is said to be weather resistant though I’ve yet to get it wet, I would take pains to protect it from rain by means of umbrella or hat. The lamp is bright and very affordable at $20. There are certainly more technical and lighter and brighter head lamps out there but they will be three times or four times more expensive. This is the perfect one for me. I already found it very handy when my mom was trying to untangle our dog leashes at night. I note that the Astro used to only be 150 or 175 lumens and cost the same back then.

Great features packed into a sleek design

The Black Diamond Astro headlamp is an excellent little piece of gear with great functionality and form. The headband is easy to adjust and comfortable against my forehead and also does not slip out of place. The light itself is nice and bright and lights up a decently wide area. I love that you can hold the button to adjust how bright or dim the light is--rather than just having one single "bright" and another "dim" setting. It's almost like a dimmer dial in a house. The dual functionality of the rechargeable or regular alkaline batteries is also a huge plus. If you're out on the trail and need spare batteries, you can use them. But if you're just going out for a night and then coming back home, you can avoid using disposable batteries. The recharging unit is easy to use--keep in mind it does not come with a wall plug (just a USB cable) so you'll need to use one you already have (I used the plug part of an iPhone charger). Overall super happy with this headlamp and can't wait to take it on more adventures!

Light weight, Simple.

I was looking for a light and simple product and I just thought that it was appropriate. There is one button, and the adjustment of the headband size is intuitive. In particular, I like that the headband is detachable and washable.

Good but could be simpler and better

Good little headlamp but with one major stumbling block. Pros: -300 Lumens is perfect and all you ever need in most situations. - dimmable -has red light -watertight Cons: -it only has one button. To turn on/off, dim, switch between white and red light you use the same one button but hold it down for longer or double-tap it, depending on what you want. So there’s a learning curve. If you ask me it creates unnecessary complexity. If BD would just add second button to switch between white/red and that would be perfect 5-star product. But maybe some people like the single button, I don’t know. But I’d prefer a second switch.

Bright and Reliable with Great Features

I have used this headlamp for many dark spring walks with my dog because it's still chilly for backpacking but I have big plans for this headlamp this summer. It provides a bright output and a large light circumference for all your nighttime maneuvering. There are great features including dimming/brightening that give a brief flash when you have reached the lowest/highest settings. With other headlamps it was always a guessing game. There is also a "lock" button so you can ensure it won't inadvertently turn on and waste battery life when stuffed into your backpack. You can also lock it on your favorite brightness setting. For those of us who are weight-conscious about packing our gear, the total weight with batteries is 2.9 oz., nice and light. I also like that there aren't features I won't use like red lights. The light weight, visibility, and reliability will make this my go-to headlamp for all backpacking trips this summer.

Just bought and super bright!

My husband and I are starting to do more before dawn hikes and my sewing headlamp wasn't cutting it. I got this headlight mostly for the color, price, and using other Black Diamond products and when I opened the package, I was so excited that it A. Came with it's own batteries B. Really lightweight C. Great color and comfortable band that I failed to relize that the light was aimed in my eyes when inserting the batties until I tested the light. Holy cow, is this thing bright!! I instantly blinded myself from about an arms length away. Highly recommend and glad for the semi research/mostly impulse buy.

Dual battery option is a life saver!

This is a really affordable headlamp that is also great quality. There are multiple light settings and the dimmable lighting really helps with my insomnia, so I’m not staring at bright light right before bed. The best feature imo is the dual battery option. I bought the rechargeable battery separately which I use as my first power source. But on longer trips I find that my rechargeable lamps and headlamps die with no way to recharge them on the trail. Amazingly this headlamp also takes normal batteries, so I can put those in as a backup if the rechargeable battery runs out.

1 Star for Battery Install; 3 Stars for the Light

Unless you have a a big thumb, you may have a difficult time plus sore thumb moving the small plastic tab just trying to get the battery compartment open. I almost returned this out of fear the little tab would break trying to open it. I'm not confident the tab has any durability. If you can get past that, the light itself is pretty nice, even, and bright on max power. The dimming feature is nice, but if you want to aim your light downward, there are no specific click points to adjust/lock in place the angle. It's one continuous smooth travel which doesn't feel secure.

Upgraded the Lumens on the Astro in recent years

I love this simple easy to use and BRIGHT headlamp. Yes there may be brighter and more technical and lighter headlamps out there if you’re a gram stickler and a pro, but for the average camper or casual hiker this item will more than suffice. I love mine, most recently using it when my mom was trying to untangle a long leash and cord for our puppos.

Super bright...rechargeable...use for everything

I initially thought I would only use it for camping, but it's turned into my go-to light source for everything...working on car, running at night, stuff in the backyard, changing a flight tire, basically anything that I use to use my iphone or a flashlight for, and of course all of the other camping/overlanding activities. I had one previously that ate of AA batteries, so I like the simplicity of the rechargeable battery. I basically just keep it in my car at all times, with the charger. No complaints thus far. If I had to find something, you could argue that it may be slightly bulkier than others, but only because of the rechargeable battery, but it's still very compact.
