Great fit, but pills easily and many loose threads
I purchased this for primarily hiking and to wear as a rash guard. It's not advertised as a rash guard, but I think it works well as one. I purchased the first one (Blue Quartz) and wore it on a 4 mile hike and noticed immediately it was pilling under the arms (note this is before I wore it swimming), but I still loved the fit and how lightweight it was, so I purchased a second one (Glacial). I love the thumb holes, hood (which I tuck in while swimming), the waist tie is great for swimming, and it's lightweight enough for 80+F hikes. Unfortunately the side zip is too small for my phone. I have had both for about a month and have worn the Blue Quartz top for 3 hikes, 1 pool swim, and 2 ocean swims, plus just wearing out in the sun on walks and while gardening. I have worn the Glacial one for 2 hikes and gardening, no swimming so far. I'm giving this 4 stars because it's super cute and fits well, but I'm afraid they aren't going to last super long. I've had other Mountain Hardware clothing for 10+ years and expected the same of this. The Blue Quartz has almost lost multiple seams and I've had to get my sewing kit out to tie them off to stop the continual unthreading of the seams, plus the pilling under the arms. The Glacial top is worn by the zipper, potentially from my hiking pack's waist strap.
Best Sun Shirt Out There
Best sun shirt! I have tried several. They all felt heavy, not breathable, or baggy. This shirt is barely there! It is so thin but so effective. I will do anything to not wear sun protection, but I love this sun shirt.
Love the lightweight SPF material
Glad I found this long sleeve for sun protection on a day hike in Bryce Canyon, Utah. I wanted a lightweight sleeve to cover my arms and neck / head areas.
Frays
I liked the color and the fit. I bought this shirt a while ago and have been wearing it for a while. Keeps me kinda cool and breathable. The problem is that there are so many frays and seams unraveling. I'm returning this as a product for this price should not be this poorly constructed.
Not durable for camping trips
I bought this for my daughter to hike on the SHT. After only 4 days the stitching started to fray at the hem that holds the draw string and the stitching broke next to one of the thumb holes. If it wasn’t so expensive I’d sew it back together but as it is I’ll probably return it. If you’re not camping it’s probably great since it’s light and provides nice sun protection.
Great, lightweight, cool
Took two of these on a recent backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon and really enjoyed wearing them! Very comfy and light weight, kept me cool the whole time and dried out quickly after a dunk in the river. The only things I didn’t love are the draw string in the waist. I tried to remove it but it is sewn in. I also wish that the hood actually had a draw string because the hood kept falling down in the wind. Would recommend for sure but I would love it even more with slight modifications. Fit was just a little loose, which is my preference!
GAME CHANGER in sun protection!
I have 6 of these by now… brought two on my 22 day hike on the JMT without and didn’t have to worry about sunscreen on my arms, back, neck, and ears the whole trip! (the hood really enhances the UV protection)! I am very fair skin, been wearing the crater lake hoody for years, and have yet to get sunburn through the amazingly soft and moisture wicking material! The Crater Lake Hoody is my go-to backpacking top, and wear it anytime I am in the sun for extended periods of time. This piece is a must have for anyone doing anything outdoors!
Fell apart after 2nd cold water gentle cycle wash
Seam came undone after 2nd cold water gentle cycle washing! And I bought this in a larger than normal size so the seam didn't experience any type of stress or pressure. So sad as I thought this would be something I could keep and enjoy for many years. I am a huge fan of Mountain Hardware (have many pairs of the Dynama shorts, fleeces, and a sleeping bag) and always expect a quality product...this failed my expectation. Also, the hood, as another reviewer noted, is pretty pointless without a way to keep it on your head.
Performed superbly in 90+ degrees
I love this shirt! I typically wear a Med and the Small I purchased fits like a dream (5'2", 135lbs). I put this shirt to the test over the weekend with a 8 mile, 2880 elevation gain, training hike in 90+ degree weather with 30lbs. on my back. It performed better than I expected. I love the hood for keeping the sun off the back of my neck and the thumb loops that help the shirt securely cover the tops of my hands from sun. I was worried that having long sleeves would be too hot; however, I was happily surprised that this shirt seemed to keep me more comfortable than I would have been in a tank or T-shirt. I did take it off and dunk it into the creek for a cool down post summit and found that it was very hard to put back on wet. I supposed it is best to simply jump in the creek next time. I'm looking forward to using this as I thru-hike the Colorado Trail this summer.
UPF long sleeve with more potential.
The fabric is soft and feels great against your skin, but it's pretty dense and doesn't dry as quickly as I'd like. Additionally, there is no odor technology. I wasn't a fan of the cord on the bottom. It might be useful for water sports, but if you're advertising this shirt for climbing, hiking, or backpacking, you have to consider all the things that come with wearing this piece. The cords feel like you have some straps hanging and interfering with all your other stuff (backpack belt, harness, etc.). Unfortunately, I had to cut the cords because they were so annoying. I don't find the side pocket particularly useful. It adds weight to the shirt, it's too small, and the zipper is tiny.
