Great shorts, but run just a little snug
I really like the material; it feels durable with just a slight stretch. I’m not into the drop in pockets, but they haven’t been a problem… maybe I’ll find a use for them later. The zip pockets on both sides are nice though. The 10” inseam is also a great fit for me landing just at the knee, which I like a lot. My only hang up is with the waist fit. There is no stretch there and they are ever so slightly tighter than other brands (Patagonia and prAna for example), and being I usually wear 34 and REI doesn’t stick the 35 has me unable to return the; 36 are too big. I’m having to consider returning these and buying the 35 directly from Kuhl.
Great design but....quality not so
After just 6 days of wearing these, the horizontal stitching at inseam loosened and began to unravel (not a result of catching on anything). At $70 I expected much more. Fit and functionality of these shorts is outstanding having all the storage needed along with the light-weight stretch fabric, but the construction leaves lots to be desired. Back to the store and sending note to Kuhl.
Best shorts at REI
I tried on everything at REI starting at $40 Columbia and was just not happy with quality, fit, fabrics, or closures until I worked my way up to these. I really like their solid metal snap verses button holes that stretch over time. I also love the hidden side zipper pockets that give you similar function as cargo pockets and look great. I hate frumpy cargo pockets. They also have the right amount of stretch. I have other stretch shorts that loosen while you're wearing the point that they could fall down and that just sucks. Fit was also spot on for me so I disagree with comments about sizing up. I don't want a lot of redundant clothes and just want a few nice pieces, so I'm happy to pay extra for these.
Doesn't Last Long, Useless Warranty
I bought these about a year ago after an REI sales rep told me they were very durable. Within a few months, they started falling apart. My rear pocket ripped out of nowhere. Just a few days ago, I took a light fall onto a rock while hiking, and it ripped a big hole in the bottom. Kuhl support will not accept my warranty claim and told me to buy a new pair. These shorts will not handle any outdoor activities other than a walk on a sidewalk.
Terribly expensive, but terribly good.
I bought the shorts with my 20% off promotion REI had. Having bought a couple of pairs of KUHL convertible pants and I know it is a good product. I am a scout leader and do a lot of hiking, backpacking, and camping. They hold up well under all these conditions, and on Sunday sometimes I wear them to church. The only complaint I had with pricey pants like this is the Velcro pocket stitching breaks loose. The price of the pants are a bit overpriced at $70.
Great, versatile summer shorts!
I bought these along with some of the 12" ones to replace my aging fleet of summer shorts, and so far I couldn't be any happier. I was attempting to move away from the stereotypical cargo shorts, because I'm no longer a fan of the style, but I knew I would still need pockets for things like my phone, my keys, wallet, doggie bags for hikes with the dog (etc), so these shorts and their numerous pockets really fit the bill. They look great, and just yesterday my fashion-forward sister-in-law noticed I was wearing them and commented on how they look like great hiking shorts but also look nice for wearing around town. They fit well but are generally less roomy compared to my older shorts I'm getting rid of, so I am finding that I want to pare down my key ring and get rid of needless stuff in my wallet so they're not so bulgy in the tighter-fitting pockets. I have always been a longer shorts sort of guy (my legs are long), but I tried getting these 10" shorts and so far I have been very happy with them, as they aren't too short, and they're pretty comfy actually.
Great Weight/Features - Baffling Zipper Direction
After living with these shorts for a while I love most everything about them. The fabric holds up to repeated wearings and is durable and comfortable. Most of the technical features are well thought out and implemented, although I agree with one review mentioning a weak snap. I belt helps, but it's still a bit annoying. The pockets are well-sized in the right locations. I LOVE having dedicated, secure, and correctly sized pockets for my sunglasses and phone. My biggest complaint has to do with the cargo pockets and where the zippers are located - they're on the back-side. Accessing their contents is awkward at best of times (standing) and impossible at others (seated - in a car or plane). Fix the zipper location and they would be, The Perfect Short.
Rare to find shorts that fit well
I'm 6'4", 200lbs and 34 waist. I bought the 34" short and they fit perfectly. Usually something in a 34" waist is too tight somewhere. Shorts with 36" waists I have to cinch up the belt like a sack of taters which leads to my wife pretending she doesn't know me in public (yeah, that's the reason). Great phone pocket on the left leg too. Finally a place for that nuisance. I figure once KUHL learns their shorts fit me they will change or discontinue them so I'm off to get another pair pronto.
Second pair and button is sub par
Second set of these shorts and what I thought might be an issue with the first pair is the same with these. The button pops in active bending all the time very easily. Don’t do anything remotely athletic in these or bend over to tie your shoes. I’m very slim and these still pop often
Great fit and design, but the stitching fails.
These shorts fit great and are well designed. Unfortunately, the leg stitching fails quickly and makes the pockets unusable. I purchased 2 pairs initially and one failed. I bought 2 additional pairs and both of them failed as well.
