How to Choose Daypacks

By Activity

  • Hiking: can hold a water reservoir and available in different torso sizes for right fit
  • Climbing: narrow profile, abrasion-resistant reinforcements
  • Traveling: pockets or compartments for organization, carry-on size

Capacity

  • Packs that hold 20L or less are best for runs, day hikes, mountain biking or short trips.
  • Packs between 20–35L are great for longer day hikes and as a travel carry-on.
  • Packs holding 35–50L work for extended trips and mountaineering or climbing that calls for extra equipment.

I bought the Stratos 24 to replace a Manta 36 which I found too big for my. needs. However, I was surprised at how little storage there really was in the Stratos when you put a water reservoir into the its space in the main compartment. I had to push my water jacket firmly to the bottom of the compartment. There is a small zip compartment on the back of the pack, but it has very little space. I loved the frame and the back that pushes it away from. your back with a stiff but open piece of fabric. It should keep you from getting your back too warm on hot days. The waist belt was wider than the one on my manta so that was a nice feature. But the length and width of the two packs are the same. The only real difference are the number and depth of the pockets. I decided to return the Stratos and work in a better fit for the Manta.

Perfect balance for a daypack

I bought this as an upgrade and expansion from my Talon 11, which I love, for some longer adventures I have planned. I’m not a minimalist, ultralight hiker, but I like a bag that holds just enough. The suspension and frame of this pack keeps the load well distributed, and even over-packed with 2.5 liters of water in it, I never felt like this was heavy. The pockets are well thought out, and absolutely bombproof. Haven’t had to use the rain cover but it’s great to have on call. Only quibble is the pockets one the hip belt are a bit hard to zip close, but that’s such a minor issue it’s barely worth mentioning. As someone who’s been hiking for 30+ years, this is a really great addition to the gear roster.

Hiking the AT

Slackpacked 5 days with this is pack. Superb. Very comfortable. Easily held my Smartwater bottles. Never had my back sweat because of ventilation. Easily adjustable. Lots of zippered pockets. Comfortable on shoulders and hips. So glad I purchased it. Osprey is great.

Only Pack I Use

I have been using the Stratos 24 for the last 5 years. Best hiking pack I have ever used. I've put several thousand trail miles on my blue Stratos 24 in the Sandia Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico. I think the best feature is the mesh back that keeps airflow and allows your shirt to wick and not get so clammy. The pockets on the hip belt are very useful for sunscreen, multi tool, small pack towel, or snowbaskets. It holds plenty for all-day adventures. I bought the Stratos 36 for winter snowshoeing hikes when I carry extra clothing and winter survival gear. Getting ready to replace with a new Stratos 24.

Slightly Bulky But Very Comfortable Daypack

I purchased this pack to replace the Talon Pro pack that I returned to improve the comfort and weight balancing and so far the Stratos has served me well. It's a bit bulky and overbuilt for a daypack, however I find the additional weight/bulk of the suspension system to be well worth the extra comfort this pack provides. As always with Osprey products, this is a well-built pack that should stand up to daily use and abuse out on the trails.

This bag is great!

My bf has the Stratos 34 and gave me his Stratos 24 as we decided to walk the Way of St. James for about 16 days. I even carried my 13-inch macbook pro with me as I had to work some days on the road. I can tell you that while I'm getting the Mira 22 for myself, the experience I've had with this bag has been great. I carried 3 changes of clothes along with the cleaning and medical essentials, a pair of flip-flops and my computer with all the chargers for the phone, powerbank and pc and can assure you I still had space left on it. I was using an older version of the Stratos (orange color / you can see it from the side mesh pockets) so note that a) this is the male version, b) it didn't have the possibility to addapt the suspension fitness within the mesh, and yet it was still perfect for me. Would recommend this to anyone!

Great for Hiking

Takin this thing on a few hikes so far and it is amazing, tons of pockets the back support is amazing, Osprey made another excellent hiking backpack. There are 2 downfalls to this in my opinion. It doesn’t come with a hydration bag, with no easy spot to put it. This is compared to the other Osprey packs that I have bought where there was a built in lip that held the hydro bag (if you owned an old Osprey bag you know what I’m talking about). The other reasons and the main reason I’m giving it a 4 star is that you cannot do any downhill bike riding with it. The way that the pack sits makes it impossible to look up while descending. I know this isn’t what the pack is intended for, but both the Manta 36 and Rev series packs were all around packs. This one is solely for hiking.

Comfortable, fast adjustable and perfect

This is an excellent day pack, or a day pack compliment to a larger pack for a second person and multi-day backpacking (we have a 75 liter and this for our backpacking trips). Very fast to adjust between 2ppl with different back lengths. Perfect functioning and just an awesome piece of equipment, absolutely love it. Osprey does however need to revise their chest strap, the slide portion which connects to the pack pulls out too easily from its rails and is very difficult to get back in, happens on all my Osprey mtb packs also. Would appreciate if this pack came out of the gates with a hydration bladder, but no problem to add, has a slot built in for adding one (just remember to get the magnetic holder attachment for the chest strap separately) .....

Great fit & weight

I went with the men’s based on my torso size. Did a 9.3 mile steep mountain hike that lasted an entire day and was never uncomfortable with this pack. There was plenty of room for everything we needed for an alpine hike. The hip pockets were handy for little things we needed to access frequently.
