Highly cushioned, secure-fitting, robust sandals
These are fantastic sport sandals for all sorts of activities. A couple of things stand out: they fit very securely so you can adventure confidently, and they are highly cushioned and so you have to get used to being a couple inches taller when wearing them! These water sandals are in fact open footwear, but I got them in late winter and there was still about a foot of snow on the ground. I ended up wearing them several times for show shoveling and walking around on the snow, and miraculously, my feet never got cold, even being outside in mid-30s weather with a medium hiking sock for a couple of hours. So I guess these are snow sandals as well! The hiking tread on the soles had great traction on the snow and ice. Even when I was slipping and sliding a bit, the sandals fit very securely and did not shift on my foot. In terms of fit, I wear a size 11 and these are true to size. With many types of hiking shoes and boots I need a wide width. These are a medium width, but fit me perfectly, and the great thing about the way the sides are designed is that a bunion I have developed on my right foot was right between two straps, so the sandals were perfect. In terms of comfort, these have remarkable cushioning. They are rather high, and since I usually wear 'barefoot' style shoes with little to no drop from the heel to the toes, when I first put these on I felt like I was standing on 2" lifts. But once they were both on I felt balanced and secure and they just hugged my foot like a glove. In terms of properly fitting these to the foot, the lacing system consists of a stretchy cord and a plastic slider. You can customize the lacing tightness to your heart's content up and down your foot to get the most secure fit. I like this neat and self-contained system and was able to use it effectively to make the sandals hug my feet. If there was one thing that I might suggest, it would be to add adjustability to the heel strap; it fit well but there were a couple of times I might have liked to tighten it a bit, depending on the sock (or lack thereof). Using the laces I was able to make up for this and fit the sandals securely. In terms of look, they are sporty and great looking. I have the gray with coral pink laces and they go with everything. I really really like these sandals and look forward to many fun adventures on the trail and even in the snow.
comfort from the get-go
I tested these sandals on rough terrain, sand and snow packed trails. In each instance they were stable and hugged the paths well. On the first wear I traveled 7 miles without any rubbing or break-in pain of any type. Very comfortable. The arch support and heel bed are perfect. Other shoes have caused my heel spurs to become irritated but not these. I have been wearing these in the house as a supportive house shoe until the weather permits more outdoor usage. Feedback for the designers is to shorten the shoe lace a bit. I had to tuck it in so that it would not touch the ground.
10/10 would recommend, used for water/mud/hiking.
LOVE these shoes! Used in Kauai on a hiking trip, and they were perfect. Handled the slimmy mud, and wet rocks with ease. Also, didn't need a break-in period. Husband and I wore them almost straight out of the box and did multiple hikes during the week, including 1 9.5 mile hike up a mountain to a waterfall. Couldn't have been happier.
I Tried All the Water Shoes…
I’ve gone through the gamut with hiking shoes for water situations. These were my last stop because I always thought they were pretty ugly and had a kind of Dads Who Don’t Care kinda vibe… these shoes are the jam. They can take on any kind of rocky surface, jagged, slippery, sandy, and they protect my feet while being comfortable for many miles of walking. The picture below is in Aruba. Those rocks are sharp and jagged and all over the island that hasn’t been turned into the perfect man made beaches. They did everything I needed to explore. Feel silly it took me so long to come around to these.
Keen doesn't disappoint!
I have been wearing Keen sandals for decades now for travel and just everyday summer wear. Since it is very much winter here in the northland of MN (subzero temps and snow), I was not able to try them outside yet but I did wear them inside for a week. I have been wearing them on my livestream fitness classes as I am not back to the gym yet with no vaccination. I have done Dance Jam, Kick Boxing and even some Barre Fusion classes while wearing them. The fit is great and secure from day one. I feel very stable without my feet sliding around in them and the cushion is great. The arch support is important for me in any footwear I purchase because of the need for comfort as I move through my later years and still want to be active on hikes and just walking around. All strap surfaces that would touch your feet if not wearing socks are covered in soft neoprene like fabric. So socks are definitely optional. They are lightweight compared to others I've had in the past which is also important for me on trips whether here in US or abroad. The sole is designed with markings that don't make it look so clunky and large. Even the straps are designed to make a woman's foot look leaner and more feminine. I like the thicker bungee cord holding the straps. It has a clean look and keeps my foot secure. The loop in back helps in easy on and off. Can't wait to be traveling again and to bring my new sandals! I received this product gratis in exchange for my true and honest review.
it has changed in sizing
I have owned Astria since 2021, and I love it. I wear it everywhere when the weather allows it. This time I sized up from 5. 5 to 6 because 5. 5 was out of stock. When I tried it, it was tight - not in terms of length, but in terms of arch and entrance. (The sole is true to size in length and width, but the upper was not the same size. ) I measured webbing, and it turned out the new one was 5mm shorter on each side, meaning it is shorter by at least 1 cm as a whole shoe. I do not think this webbing will stretch out, unlike the entrance of the shoe. I realized that the sole design is also a bit different, so they might have changed the design a bit since it has been 4 years, or it might be just not being consistent.
Nice updates to an all around Summer Shoe!
This is my second pair of Keen water sandals. I like this style of shoe for both backcountry camp shoes and travel to tropical destinations. These are the water sandals that I take to new locations when I don't know what I'm going to find. They provide toe protection against rocks and prickly things, they are stylish, you can wear socks for cool evenings, and they have good traction on the bottom to wear on hard and wet surfaces. I really like the black and white one as it goes with a lot of my travel clothes and I would feel comfortable wearing this model to a lot more places. Doesn't just look like a watershoe. The updated style is actually lighter and more breathable than the older Keens but the sole is now thick and cushy, so you won't be feeling the small rocks at all. They have a neoprene heel strap with a woven strap over the top for pulling the shoe on or for clipping to your pack. Good arch support and they tighten well if needed. I haven't had these long enough to know how well they will hold up. but they seem to be the typical well-made KEEN that I expect. I'm now wearing my new ones everywhere as they fit in so well and are comfortable. I wear a 9.5 and they seem to run true to size. My only wish is that KEEN would put bright, reflective stripes/dots in the sole. These shoes turn bottom-up when you drop them in a creek by accident and a bright orange/reflective stipe would make finding them a lot easier!
I always thought they were so ugly…
…so tried virtually every other water/hiking shoe/sandal out there - tevas, chacos, my boots, old tennis shoes. After none were satisfying for the hiking water adventures I take with my dog literally every week, I finally succumbed to the keens. They do everything I need on all the terrains… gravel, dry rocks, wet rocks, steep dirt road/loose gravel hills, grass obvs, river mud, river rocks, waterfalls. The one negative is in river/water type spots, it could be easy to roll your ankle if not careful because of the way the outer sides handle leaning (it flips down instead of rolling) at the outer edges). Nonetheless, this shoe is what I have needed and it took years for me to get here.
Runs small
I have worn Keen for years and size 8 was roomy enough for the width and toe box. Inordered online figuring it was pretty reliable and safe not to need a personal fitting. I had to return my purchase because the shoe was very tight to get into and remained tight even after loosening everything. I would recommend at least a half to a fulll size up from your usual Keen size expectations and that if you need arch support then a personal fitting to confirm it's placement. I am giving it three stars because I assume the quality of Keen remains the same but sizing is now an issue.
2nd Pair of Keens
Nine years ago, a friend of mine was shopping at a thrift store and found a pair of Keen sandals that were in my size with the tags still attached. She gave them to me, and I wore those things everywhere. Hiking, camping, oceans, rivers, lakes; if I was outside I was wearing my Keen sandals. Last year, at the end of summer, after years of abuse and miles of trekking through burning sand and water--both fresh and salty--my first pair of Keens decided that the soles no longer needed to be attached to the rest of the sandals. I will miss that first pair; but I am excited about the adventures I will have in these.
