Features

  • Inclusive sizing lets you find your best fit based on body shape and sleeping preferences
  • Light-but-not-tight performance fit contours to your body shape, blending comfort with thermal efficiency and a light weight
  • Zipper and cinch at the bottom allow you to easily transform it from a flat quilt into a footbox
  • Integrates easily with your sleeping pad (not included) via the 2 pad cords that let you adjust the fit and warmth while keeping you centered on your pad all night
  • Draft tube on the bottom of the footbox prevents cool air from entering when the footbox is cinched tight
  • Shell and lining fabric are made from recycled downproof nylon and insulated with water-resistant, 850-fill-power goose down
  • Nonfluorinated durable water repellent (DWR) finish on the shell helps moisture bead up on the surface

Sizing Guidance
Shoulder and Hip Girth spec values reflect the width of the quilt when it is open and laid flat. Since backpacking quilts are not intended to be used with both edges pulled together underneath you (they rely instead on your sleeping pad to provide insulation from the ground), here are the equivalent fit suggestions:
  • Size Medium offers a comparable fit to a mummy bag with a shoulder girth of 62.5 inches.
  • Size Medium Wide offers a comparable fit to a mummy bag with a shoulder girth of 70 inches.
  • Size Long offers a comparable fit to a mummy bag with a shoulder girth of 63.5 inches.
  • Size Long Wide offers a comparable fit to a mummy bag with a shoulder girth of 71 inches.
Though this doesn't come in Short or Narrow sizes like our Magma sleeping bag, the flexibility of a quilt allows smaller-bodied campers to adjust as needed for a comfortable, warm fit.

REI’s trail quilt offers a good selection of features to minimized weight at a good price and maintain good warmth. This quilt when paired with an insulated pad provides a much more comfortable night’s sleep than a mummy bag. Definitely recommend.

Baffles break leaving cold spots
Fallentree3
Baffles broke after packing and unpacking it for a couple weeks. This made insulation gravitate to certain spots and leave others cold. REI rejected the return and told me it needs to be clean to return. I cleaned it as directed and they rejected the return saying I must have cleaned it wrong even though the issue occurred before washing it. There’s no company to turn to when REI rejects it like that as North Face or whatever other company would do. They don’t back it up at all so buyer beware. REI isn’t the company it used to be. Lightweight quilt

Edit: I spoke with some people about my previous review and they said what I took as a lack of down fill was likely due to REI washing it but not drying it completely to the point where all the down is dry and that it clumped, and it was probably not incorrectly filled. I bought some wool dryer balls and tumbled the quilt in the dryer for 4 hours. Afterwards the fill seems much more event and after comparing it to another person's quilt I'm ready to admit my mistake. I changed my review to '3' because while it appears okay now I have not used it in the wild yet. I will update this review once I actually use it. I've added three photos to the review after the quilt was tumbled to show how much better it looks.

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

I am 5'9 240 lbs. I am not your typically shaped hiker. I have trouble in mummy bags as a side sleeper. Lashing on a properly sized and rated synthetic bag to a backpack can be really irritating given the size I need to sleep comfortably. ENTER THE MAGMA 30 QUILT. For me this was a game changer. It really cuts down on the bulk of my backpack and also really allows me the room I need to toss and turn without sliding off of my pad. Super toasty. I have had it down to 32 degrees Fahrenheit and was really comfortable. Paired with my Big Agnes Rapide pad with a 4.8 r-value, I believe that if this quilt had a hood I would be comfortable below 30 degrees. Very Light, very packable, inexpensive and so far durable. I've done 30 days in the back country with it so far and couldn't be happier. Finding good gear for a big guy is difficult and this quilt was a true game changer for me.

I have never been more mad about camping gear

The images are extremely misleading. I was psyched to find a ultralight, square shaped bag but this isn’t a bag! First, this item has an open foot end. It has a cinch to close it but I wanted a square shaped ultralight bag because mummy bags are like sleeping in coffins. So I can close it, but it becomes mummy shaped. Second, the zipper on the side only goes up about a quarter of the “bag” starting from the bottom. To close the remainder of the bag you get 3 little toggles with huge gaps between them. Why? Why not just put a zipper all the way up? REI could have made an awesome product by just putting zippers on this, thus creating a reasonably priced ultra light bag that is *actually* comfortable. Apparently the mark up potential is just too high and rather than give us something awesome and functional we’re stuck with $500 plus mummy coffins if we want ultralight sleeping options.

Awesome comfortable quilt for stomach sleepers!

Bought this in a long wide size and used with the Nemo Tensor long wide sleeping pad for a 5 day bikepacking trip. Weather got into the mid 40s and i was warm the entire time!!! The pad and the quilt are both super small and fit in my panniers very easily. I am a stomach sleeper and dont like mummy bags much, this quilt was super comfortable for my trip. Pros: small and packable, comfortable for stomach sleeper, feels like a normal sleeping bag, can sinch the foot box closed, and has little straps to keep the quilt in place on the pad Cons: the stuff sack is slippery (nylon material) and makes it a bit tricky to pack thr quilt. Also its not water proof or resistant ij any way, so get a plastic bag or different sack if you plan to encounter weather. The loops to keep the quilt closed took a bit to figure out but once I did it was great. Lastly, the nature of the quilt lets a small draft in if you move around but it didnt make me cold and it warmed up quickly.

Nice warm quilt with great features and value

Nice job REI! I am a long time backpacker and wanted to experiment with a quilt. Great features and value. I appreciate the zipper footbox with drawstring (I only synched closed when temp hit low 30's). The sleeping pad attachment cords work great to keep quilt in place despite side to side tossing (I'm an active side sleeper). The snap collar adds tons of cozy warmth. Quilt was very comfortable on backpacking trips in both 50s and 30 degree temps when combined with Thermarest Xlight NXT sleeping pad (R-Value 4.5). Bring good hat or down hoodie for colder temps. The quilt was slightly more drafty than a mummy bag but I loved the extra room and flexibility and my feet never got cold. My only negative is for the stuff sack. It's ridiculously long and too slippery to keep in place while stuffing. Get rid of it and replace with a good stuff sack. Note on attachment cords - you twist the tabs on the cord 180 degrees to attach and unattach to the loops on quilt).

Very Light and Compressible

It is very light and packs down perfectly to the size of a Nalgene water bottle. The only con for me is how cold I was in this bag, and I live in AZ. It was fine in the summer, but fall/ winter hikes here have been miserable with this quilt. I strongly urge women to shoot for a warmer quilt (the 0-degree version of this might suffice). I didn't realize that some women's bags preemptively prescribe the temp rating to suit us better. This unisex bag might be rated more for men's comfort level. It is a lovely quilt despite not being strong enough for me. I might return and get the 0 version! Very compressible.

Nice but not comfort rated for women

I have used this quilt for over a year on more than 6 backpacking trips. This is my first quilt and I love the light weight, the feel & being able to move around in it. I use it with the REI Helix (which I also love). This quilt is great in late Spring or early fall, when it's 40 degrees and dry. Here's what I don't like...the little toggle connectors (but that's not a deal breaker). This quilt is not rated for women; Unfortunately Unisex = Mens and it definitely doesn't keep me warm to 30 (worse if its cold & damp). If you don't fluff it up before you sleep it has cold spots. I'd give it a comfort rating of 40+ degrees (that's with merino long johns). If you're female and a cold sleeper this is a fine 3 season quilt. However there are other less expensive options out there in this temperature range.
