Muzzle Device Knowledge

Muzzle Devices offer numerous benefits to the shooter including allowing for more accuracy and quicker follow up shots.   Reducing Recoil is often the primary goal and while low recoil reduces muzzle rise it does not totally eliminate it.   A well-designed Muzzle Device will incorporate features to address Muzzle Rise as well.   Reduced Recoil and Muzzle Rise are both accomplished by redirecting expanding gases.   It is important for the shooter to understand that redirecting gas has consequences.   Redirected gas away from the bullet path helps accuracy and speed for the shooter but also creates more sound, concussion, and unburnt gas particles to contend with.   It is vital that the shooter understand the Redirected Gas Path (RGP) for the Muzzle Device they choose.

RGP direction and volume are determined by the Muzzle Device ports.    The more gas volume that is redirected the higher the performance of the Muzzle Device.   Many high performance Muzzle Devices can turn gas at an extreme angle rearward and the shooter must be comfortable that body parts are positioned on the firearm so not to be negatively impacted.   It is important to understand that RGP is not accurately definable as different ammunition using the exact same firearm/Muzzle Device combination will vary.   Atmospheric pressure, temperature and elevation also effect powder burn and expanding gas effects in the RGP.

Ultradyne offers different Muzzle Devices that redirect gases at varying angles to provide a muzzle device option for every shooter.  With this being said, it is important for the shooter to understand their proximity to the Muzzle Device itself and determine if the RGP will cause problems.   For example, the RGP on a traditional M4 16” barrel with a combat forearm equipped with an Apollo Max will bypass a 5’9” shooter totally, however the RGP on a gun that is equipped with a fully extended hand guard and 20” barrel could possibly impact the arm of a 6’6” shooter that uses a fully extended arm style grip.   It is truly up to the shooter to determine the ideal set up for an acceptable Redirected Gas Path (RGP) for the ammo, firearm and individual shooting style to be used.

Got just in time for my next match. Timed it and chronod. Worked perfect on the bench. Using this in a PRS match worked flawless. Did not have massive gas hitting me in the face. Did have a huge amount of recoil gone. Much faster on my follow ups. And easier to view misses for wind correction. Will be getting more for my other rifles.

  2. Drew

Works amazingly well, helps keep sight picture Is very loud on a 22″ barrel but I love it.

  3. Bill

Works better than I thought it would on 6.5 creedmoor, now kicks like 22mag.

  4. DAREN

Placed on my 6.5 Grendel mini action and now it purrs like a kitten, as far as recoil. Roars like a lion with the report. Just don’t have a seat to either side of the loud end. Only issue I had, is in watching the tutorial, the wrenchs recommended to tighten on my rifle, the sizes were incorrect. Mine took a 7/8 for the brake and 15/16 for the nut.

Put the Apollo Max on my Savage MSR Long Range 6.5 Creedmoor and this is by far the most effective comp I have had on this gun. I have had other comps on this gun, but the Apollo hands down works the best for reducing recoil and the ability to see your bullet impacts. It’s easy to install and the fit and finish is top notch. Good job Ultradyne, great product.

  6. Christopher (verified owner)

First things first I just want to say the Ultradyne Customer service team is the best there is. I placed an order for this muzzle brake and contacted them to expedite the order so I could receive and use it for the weekend at the range. They expedited shipping super quick and I couldn’t have been happier.

As far as the muzzle brake itself, I was absolutely shocked at how much the recoil was reduced on my rifle. It made my rifle stay on target unlike anything I’ve tried before shot after shot. One word of caution, is just that the angle is so rearward, the gases from each blast may be slightly uncomfortable on your arm. Other than that, the quality and finish of the product is worth it especially for competition purposes.

  7. Sean

Absolutely amazing. It seems like my 308 had almost no recoil. Great product. I’m not a big review person but I was so thrilled with your product that I had to take time to give you credit

  8. Jody (verified owner)

I use the Apollo Max on my 6.5 Creedmoor PRS rifle and it works extremely well. Being able to stay on target after a shot for your follow up shots is critical. I would definitely recommend to a friend. In fact I am building a 6.5 hunting rifle for my father in law and am going to put the Apollo Max on his rifle. As a side note, Ultradyne does not sponsor me or give me any free stuff to say this…but it would sure be nice if they did!! hint hint LOL

  9. Chad

If everyone knew about this there wouldn’t be any available. sshhh lets keep this a secret! LOL really I brag about this like one of my children. thank you for such a great piece!

  10. Lenny

I ordered my Apollo Max (from a distributor) and it arrived without the timing nut for some reason. Just one email to Ultradyne and it arrived in just a few days.
Installed it on a 24″ .223 Wylde build. Keeping the target in the crosshairs, is a great benefit! Great products andgreat customer service

  11. Steve

I purchased my Apollo Max from Midway USA. It was installed on my Bergara B-14 HMR in .308Win (20in barrel) . Installation was a breeze. I was in disbelief after my first shot, the recoil was reduced to what you would expect from an .223, Major reduction in recoil. Accuracy was not changed at all. I love it. Full disclosure, it does kick off considerable blast to the sides. I don’t know if shooting under an outdoor covered position made enough difference but the shooter feels very little but some noticeable amount of percussion. The person 10-12ft to the left or right will definitely feel it. I personally do not consider any of this to be a flaw or negatives, you must be realistic, to reduce recoil the blast has to go somewhere. If it thumps the shooter, there is a problem, this device does not do that. This muzzle device is excellent.

I have used this muzzle brake on my PRS 6.5 Creedmoor and on my 6GT. It worked unbelievably well on both rifles. On my 6GT it reduced my overall recoil by 57.1%. While the suppressors I was comparing it against came in at 14.2% and 21.4% reductions. I highly recommend this muzzle brake! See video for result. https://youtu.be/daE2mf8G_2Y

I don’t like to review anything new and just out of the box. I like to give the product a workout, to see if it’s all it has been claimed to be.

The Apollo Max is 100% what they say it is and does.

I’m one year in, at a round count of 850, with a PSA AR-10 fitted with a Krieger match barrel. The optic is a Primary Arms 4x14x44 FFP with the ACSS HUD reticle designed for the 168gr .308.

Shooting Hornady ELD-M 168gr SMK rounds, I’ve dialed that little rifle in to groups of 3 you can cover with a quarter at 500 yards.

The Apollo Max reduced felt recoil by about 50%, but your shoulder might tell you otherwise. Also, before the brake was added, my groups at 500 yds were 1-1/4, so accuracy was improved by .295 with this brake. That might not sound like much, but it’s a country mile when you’re shooting at eggs handing in little string baskets at 500 yards. Is it loud? Yes. So I am usually banished to the far end of the range, down there where all the ‘loud’ rifles are.

All in all this brake is worth every penny and then some.

I just wished Ultradyne made this brake for an M1A. I’d put one on my 22″ loaded model tomorrow if they made one.

Buy it….you will not regret it.

Very pleased with the product. Huge improvement on my Savage 110 in .308.
REALLY LOUD, but i knew that ahead of time. Not likely any different than other brakes. Simply wear hearing protection!!

I did not noticed any blow back from the muzzle as I have seen with other brakes. I still wear safety glasses none the less.

I heard about this brake on a non-sponsored You tube reviewer. Using a lead sled. It ranked #1 out of about 30 different muzzle brakes. That was why I sought out the apollo max.

EASE and reliability of the install A+ guys!!!! its about a 30 second job!!! Most of that is spent finding my 2 wrenches in my bag!! LOVE IT!!!

  15. BARRY

USE ON MY AR-10 / 18″ 308 – FANTASTIC RECOIL REDUCTION FOR OVERALL CONTROL OF RIFLE!

  16. Kaleb

Bought the Apollo Max for my Ruger American in 6.5 Creedmoor. Amazing. Without the Apollo Max my rifle would bounce off target and push me out of the scope’s eye relief window leaving me staring at the dirt berm or just at black. With the Apollo Max, my cross hairs didnt even leave the target and my eye stayed almost completely still. Was able to watch impacts through my own scope as close as 200 yards and had MUCH faster follow up shots.
It was super easy to install (clear directions came with the product) and install did not damage the coating which is a big plus for aesthetics.
Lastly, I did not feel any blast. It was a bit louder but they really did an incredible job directing the gasses around the shooter.
Bottom line: this product made shooting even more fun. Will be buying more for future rifles.

Best muzzle break and company ever! First off they sent me the apollo max 5.56, I ordered the apollo max 7.62, my first thought when I realized this was “s***, I’ll probably never get intouch with them and be screwed out of my money”. That wasn’t the case at all. I emailed them late Monday night and by the time I woke up on Tuesday Parker had already replied, and not only did he reply he sent out the right break that day with a shipping label the send the wrong one back. They had the right break in my hands 2 days later and I also called Parker and he answered the phone right away, super nice dude and very informative he went over the process of how the came up with the best break ever, and after finally getting out to the range today it truly shows, it made my scar 17 almost like I was shooting a 22lr. I am so happy with everything I mean i really can’t tell you in words how great this company and the Apollo Max 7.62 truly is. I will be putting there products on all my future builds/projects!

No Hype-no BS -My IWI Galil Ace Gen 2 is like a new gun. It was hoping all over the place and having major issues getting back to that sweet spot of the scope where your eye relief is perfect. The Apollo Max calmed the rifle down to the point I didn’t have to find the sweet spot because the rifle barley moved. Okay, so I pop my bipod off and do a mag dump. This was extremely impressive . You see the analogy “it shoots like a 22LR ” well not quite just because it so much louder . But the recoil is so reduced it is like shoot a 22 (in my case a very heavy 22) . I must say this has great value. I fear to tout it too much as the word will get out the competitive shooting world . Don’t even hesitate , whip out the card and order you one . If you shoot Heavy Metal I would say this is a excellent choice . Now I am scratching my head thinking what does their 9MM PCC device do (there’s no reviews) . It’s quality stuff. It’s reasonably priced . And I ordered direct & had it in about a week . I watched a bunch of YouTube videos before deciding on the Apollo Max . Check them out. The device lived up to all the claims . I would work proudly for these guys . Aim small , shoot fast -RU Ready – Stand by *-*BEEP*

The compensator itself reduces recoil fantastically. If I were shooting stationary without barriers or against other objects I would not be leaving this review. If you are engaging near any objects or structures the blowback and carbon fragments are sent right into your face. It actually damaged my protective eyewear. If it didn’t do that I would give this product 5 stars. Unfortunately due to the nature of my range activities I will have to look for another option.

  20. James Graham

Just put the Apollo Max on my new Benelli Lupo in .300 win mag. All I can say is WOW !!! Literally less recoil than my 30-30 absolutely an awesome product and machining and finish second to none. Buy it, you won’t regret it.

  21. Matt

Ordered mine from Optics Planet. Installed on a Savage 110 Tactical in 300 Winmag. I researched and reviewed about a dozen before deciding on this one and I am not disappointed at all! I did have issues with the timing nut and threads. When properly timed, I only had a couple threads engage on the brake. I switched to shims and only have about .010 shims installed. The diameter of the barrel and brake are near perfect. I recommend this 100% for anyone looking to significantly reduce the recoil of their rifle!

  22. Bama

I have it on my Ruger sfar ar10
It’s noo recoil the max is the best
I’m getting a bolt action 308 next and I will be getting the max for that as well

  23. Jonathan D

I purchased the Apollo Max in 6.5 Creedmoor for my bolt action rifle just over a year ago and it’s seen a few thousand rounds pass through it. I genuinely can’t believe how well it mitigates recoil. Every now and then I remove the brake and shoot with a bare muzzle just to see if my perception has changed over time, and let me tell you, I’m immediately happy to put the brake back on. Fit and finish are great, and it has held up to a lot of use.
Also, do yourself a favor and get an inexpensive ultrasonic cleaner and plop the brake in there from time to time with your favorite solvent/solution. Pay attention to the end of your muzzle as well. Carbon buildup where the brake joins the barrel is not something you want to get away from you. Nothing to fret over, but something you should be aware of (with Any brake).

  24. Stephen M. IV (verified owner)

Got one for my Ruger American in .308, and its amazing. The recoil reduction is easily 75% or higher. One thing to note is that it will make anything you put on this loud as hell. Not a bad thing, just if you bring this to and indoor range be prepared for some bewildered stares lol.

  25. BJ

Built custom 308 LR and added this to it. Love seeing target get hit and still being lined up for another shot. Rifle weighs 12.63 lbs on bipod can be fired 1 handed with no jump! Other review mentioned eggs at 500. I’ve hit cigarette pack at 889 thanks to consistently seeing hits. Want to thread all my guns to add these to. Just don’t make all my calibers sadly.

  26. Gabriel

As expected, excellent on a .308 Ruger Precidion Rifle. Even I have no problem with the follow up. Recoil is reduced below the concern threshold.
