I got a blue dot because I read it can do data logging with the app, and sure enough it does an admirable job of it... As long as your phone doesn't get too far away. Reception started to get spotty though a screen door 5 yards away or with me between my phone and the dot. Only reason I took a star off, but I can understand on a technical level such a device just can't have the wattage for it.
I'd love to see a blue-square-dot that is similar with two inputs so I can simultaneously log food and ambient temp but it seems that's the domain of higher end products.

BlueDOT is designed to track temperatures over an extended period of time with moderate-heat cooking methods such as smoking, oven-roasting, deep-frying, homebrewing, and Sous Vide and to be used while grilling. Bluetooth and App work great.
Works well to track temperature. I like the App.
I had hoped the Bluetooth signal would be strong enough to work in my office from the break room kitchen to my desk. To many walls for it to work. This would work for back yard grilling if the cook stays out doors. I will have to try one with WiFi.

I use it to monitor my oven temperature. Unfortunately the power button is on the back which makes it difficult to mount to the wall. I need to pull it off the wall every time I need to turn it on or off.

Range is so embarrassing I'm ashamed I bought these. I can go inside (the grill is on the deck) 20 feet away and these lose contact. I have to walk outside and stand next to the grill for up to three minutes to "refresh" them so that my phone reflects the data on the screens of the blue dots. Usually they refuse to connect to Bluetooth at all, so now I just do like a used to do years ago and walk outside every few minutes and eyeball them. I could have stuck with my $14 set that stuck onto the grill with a magnet. That's what these do, they just cost five times as much. Lesson learned.

A good small thermometer to take on picnics. I can monitor the cook from my phone while hanging out with the gang.

Don't This Model
ThermoWorks makes some good products, but this is not one of them! The bluetooth connection is absolutely worthless and doesn't work the majority of the time. Wife got me two for Christmas and one was replace for a power button issue, and all three have the same issue. The bluetooth will not connect or stay connected. That defeats the entire point of this product. Buy the original dot instead since you are going to have to constantly check on this to anyway. It doesn't matter how close you are to the item.

Thermometer is excellent; Bluetooth is terrible. Buy without the Bluetooth.
While the thermometer itself is excellent, instantaneous and consistently working? the whole point of buying this one va any other likely excellent thermometer is the Bluetooth connection feature and it absolutely sucks. It works, but only within ~5-10 feet of the unit, literally the same range in which you could actually read the device itself. The whole point of buying a Bluetooth model was so that I could check/monitor while my phone and I were in other areas of the house or down in the yard away from the cooker. But with the uselessly pitiful range it doesn't perform this function because I have to walk over to the cook area to get the Bluetooth to connect and update. Not the solution I was looking for.

What kind of real world range do you see while inside your house and the BlueDOT outside?
BlueDOT will communicate up to 95 feet line-of-sight unless other factors are involved such as interference or some types of building materials.

One of the great features of the new ThermoWorks app/ThermoWorks Cloud is that BlueDOT temperatures can be viewed anywhere in the world as long as the following is true:
1. BlueDOT is connected to a smart device with an internet connection. This smart device must remain within range of BlueDOT, as the smart device will function as a gateway.
2. A second smart device logged into the same account has internet connection.
If you use a dedicated smart device with BlueDOT as a gateway, multiple people can log into the same account and follow the cook on their phone in the ThermoWorks app as long as their phones are connected to the Internet.
How many devices can you have connected to the blue dot? Asking as being apart of a BBQ team we are wanting to constantly monitor our cooks.
You can connect up to 6 BlueDOTs to a single mobile device. However, because of the limitations of Bluetooth, your BlueDOT can only connect to one mobile device at a time.

Can you monitor more than 1 blueDot at a time from a single phone?
Yes, you may. You can monitor up to 6 BlueDOTs on a single mobile device (tablet or phone).
Does the BlueDOT have an alarm of it's own or only through a smart device?

Can I use the BlueDOT Alarm Thermometer just as a stand-alone oven thermometer? Or bbq thermometer (measuring the inside temp of the bbq)? In other words, the probe is not inserted into any food?
Yes, you can use it as a stand-alone oven thermometer to measure the air temperature of the oven or BB. You may want to also purchase a Pro-Series® High Temp Air Probe With Grate Clip, as it was especially designed for this purpose. You can find it here: https://www.thermoworks.com/TX-1003X-AP
Do I need to purchase the Pro Series Waterproof Needle Probe to bring milk to simmer and then cool? or, can I use the included probe?
You may use the included probe as long as you don't submerge the probe's transition or cable in the liquid, as they are not waterproof. The probe itself can be submerged. If you need to submerge the entire probe (transition and cable), then the Pro-Series Waterproof Needle Probe will work.
What kind of batteries and how many?
BlueDOT requires 2 x AAA batteries. They are included with the thermometer when purchased.
Do you also need to have the Gateway to make this connect to the app/phone?
No, you do not. BlueDOT is self-contained and connects to the free ThermoWorks app on your mobile device via Bluetooth. Smoke Gateway is designed to work exclusively with Smoke.
Can the blue dot be connected to the RfX gateway?
No, it cannot be connected to RFX GATEWAY. RFX GATEWAY is only compatible with RFX MEAT. (And future RFX devices as they come out.)
