ugly but great

The color scheme is ugly as sin but I love them so far. I tried on the Speedgoat 4 and didn’t like the upper - especially the thick material on the tongue. The upper is much more comfortable and breathable now. They fit my slightly narrower feet perfectly and the laces are not loosening when I’m out. The extended heel pull actually helps when sliding the shoe on. Cushioned but not wobbly and quite grippy.

Only got 220 miles on them before they split

Do not purchase this from REI. My shoes split with 220 miles on them at month 8 (I track all my running shoe miles and only used this shoe on certain adventure trail runs). I tried warranting them at the REI in Sandy, Utah. A sales represent with acknowledgement from manager said that the shoe only gets 250 miles on them and that it is possible to get less than 200 miles on them if worn every day. I said that isn’t the case, that I have owned dozens of the previous speedgoat models a typically get 400 to 700 miles on them. I said no one would buy them if you only got 250 miles on them. The REI rep argued with me on this point several time even pulling up google articles to prove her point (whereas I found several expert reviews showing 400 to 700 miles). So buyer beware that REI firmly believes and stands by that you only get 250 miles of useful like with the Speedgoat 5 and possibly even less than 200 miles if you use them daily.
I should start by saying that these are hands down the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn, period. They just fit my feet perfect and have the perfect amount of cushion and support, and the uppers are barely noticeable. Took me a few tries to find the right fit (10.5 wide, I usually wear a 10.5 standard) but once I did these felt like slippers.
Now, these are trail runners, keyword being trail. There intended use is for running on trails, and with that in mind, I have certainly misused them. I have about 50 miles and 16,000 ft elevation gain on these so far and have used them exclusively for high alpine hiking and class 3 climbing. Miles of off-trail bushwhacking, climbing and scrambling on all sorts of surfaces, just taking it to them. Having put them through that level of abuse, they certainly look like poo. The foam midsoles are tearing at the sides and even have a few spots that tore out, the mesh upper has a good tear on the left shoe due to sliding a bit and scraping a rock(didn’t feel the rock pierce my foot through the shoe), other parts of the mesh upper are showing signs of fraying from brushing against rocks, willows, roots, ect.
They look like heck, but still feel like heaven and perform just as good as day one. Unfortunately, I don’t expect these to last too long; certainly, the Vibram sole will outlast the mesh upper. But, their comfort level and light weight feel give me such a performance advantage that I will most likely buy another pair. The Vibram megagrip and tread pattern is superb and performs well in all sorts of conditions on all sorts of rock, scree, mud, etc. It gives me so much confidence.
The comfort of these just does not give up and even after a day of 13+ miles and 5000 ft of elevation gain my feet are still happy. They breathe well and dry quickly.
Due to my misuse of these shoes, I have decided to reinforce them along the toecap and along the bottom of the mesh upper with aquaseal to help with the off-trail abuse and climbing and will do so immediately when I purchase another pair. If you stay on trail these shoes should be plenty durable.
Overall, I’m happy. They are just amazingly comfortable, and I suppose that level of extreme comfort sacrifices a bit of durability. Like most things, they should be cheaper.

As a 190lb trail runner these are the only shoes I use due to the fullsize midsole. Most other brands cut out the midsole and it turns into a leveraged ankle roller for anyone over 6ft. They are amazing on the trail and I live at base of rugged Grandeur Peak in SLC. With that said durability is a real issue with this brand. This pair being reviewed were purchased in June had to be switched out due to half of the sole on the right shoe blowing off during a run. Luckily REi is #1 when it comes to that...

Speedgoats are my fav but…the colors are terrible

Aside from the pink hue my “tan” version have, these are great shoes. It’s my third pair of Speedgoats and I’ll have a fourth as long as they don’t ruin them by changing them.

Comfy, but not durable

The positive: Plush cushioning and soft upper = extremely comfortable shoe that can be worn on long days. But it kind of ends there. I have less than 200 miles on these shoes and the Vibram outsole is falling off, many of the lugs have torn off, the midsole is shredding, and there's a rip on the upper of my right shoe.
The only grace I can give in this situation is that I am hiking on largely rocky terrain. If you're walking on dirt or less rocky terrain, perhaps they'll perform better. But this is definitely not a "do it all, durable trail runner." Time for a replacement after only a few short months.

Ugly shoes

Ugly. Im returning them because the light blue is overpowering, effeminate, and ugly for a man. I wish I could just buy another pair but unfortunately shoes are too expensive these days. If they were cheaper I wouldnt care about the atrocious color and I would just destroy them on the trails, but unfortunately I have to wear these when I am not hiking or running. Every time I look at them from the top I am angry at how ugly they look. Why cant they just use normal color combinations? Also, its always funny how REI only carries the gaudy color schemes in store. All the agreeable colors are online or out of stock.

Wore my brand new pair of Speed Goat 5's to do the Presidential Traverse Ultra in the White Mountains. Wore them for 15hrs total and they have two massive holes in them which is incredibly disappointing for a what I thought was a premium shoe. For $155 they should last longer than one hike. Stop promoting these on for rugged trail use.... they are not. Just another colorful sneaker that was a waste.

Not for trails (according to REI)

On my first hike my foot scraped a tree root and ripped a big hole in the fabric. I've never had shoes this fragile, even my altras have been put through much more abuse. The REI associate told me it was my fault because Hokas are not meant for trails. I explained that the speedgoats are trail running shoes and REI advertises them as such but he insisted the should NOT be used on trails lol
Very comfortable shoe though, although quite narrow for my toes even in wide. Too bad they got nuked by touching a tree root

Great Long Distance Hiking Shoe

I'm a long distance hiker dealing with Metatarsalgia (pain on the ball of the foot from overuse). I've tried several boots and mid-weight hiking shoes including the HOKA Speedgoat Mid 2 GTX. I found that the toe box of the GTX was too large and the sidewalls were not stiff enough. My foot would tend to slide around and up and over the sidewall when on a sloped path. This caused blisters and aggravated my Metatarsalgia. The Speedgoat 5 is a much better fit and very comfortable. The benefits of this shoe for long-distance hiking (when compared to boots) include comfort, light weight, and quick drying. The cons are that you can more easily roll your ankle.

Bring back the 4

I have had the 5s for the past year and the quality of the product is marketably worse than the 4s. They wear out very easily, specifically on the heel due to the weird design and also along the bottom where the color way meets the ground. Those things are forgivable but the mesh material they used is a nightmare when running in dusty/sandy/fine anything environments. My feet are caked with dirt after a run/hike. They are definitely a step down in quality from previous versions. Would recommend the Altra lone peaks over the 5s.

Disastrous shoe for my feet

After my doctor friend raved about Hoka shoes, I bought two pairs and after wearing it for 3-4 months absolutely destroyed my left foot. I had pair of orthofeet shoes prior to that and Orthofeet was absolute heaven for my feet.
