Essential cold weather run gear with some caveats.
I was concerned with how well these would work with an Apple Watch. It turns out they work better than expected in that regard. The cuff edge does occasionally slide back over the watch face, but when you need to check the watch, you can just slide it forward again. It would be better if there was a cutout for a watch, probably, but it works. The issue some reviews mentioned with the thumb and fingers not separated was not a problem for me. I got used to it fairly quick. The big problem for me is that I have large hands and normally wear XL in gloves. These fit, but they are tight around the thumb. Would be better if there was a taper in the thumb area.
Exactly what I was looking for
These are perfect for cold-weather running. My issue in the past was using gloves with individual fingers vs mittens. Gloves do not utilize the actual fingers themselves to help warm the other fingers. Mittens immediately solve this problem. I've run with these in 20 degree C weather and had absolutely no issue from the start. It would normally take my hands a couple miles to warm up using gloves. If anything, these get to be too warm, but that is remedied by the flip-back fingers cover. I would recommend these to anyone who have no days off, no matter how cold it is out there.
Great for Raynaud's
I have three pairs of runmitts (see review for water resistant ones, and REI doesn't yet carry the lighterweight mesh-y ones, which are much lighter weight). These are the warmest of the three (although I use the water resistant ones for cold WET weather). I have Raynaud's syndrome, and it is extremely difficult for me to keep my hands/fingers from going numb even when it's not that cold out. Mittens are obviously a step up from gloves (which are useless to me), but these are even better. I sized them so I can fit handwarmers in them (if you use handwarmers, your thumbs, instead of just fingers can benefit from them, unlike mittens!). You have less dexterity than with gloves or mittens, but the convenient flap is very easy to open/close if you need to briefly use your fingers and do not want to take the mitts all the way off - or if overheating and want to ventilate a bit. Sometimes once I have warmed up on a run, I will leave the 'flap' open for part or all of the remainder of the run. I LOVE these, and am baffled no one had previously come up with a design to keep fingers and thumbs together. (Also, hooray for supporting a local, woman-owned business. This is not a big company/corporation, this is a local runner that I see out and about and at races!)
Amazingly comfy & warm!
So excited to see these mittens at REI!!! Been buying them from the manufacturer for several yrs now; they’re perfect for cold weather trail runs, walks, errands because they are super warm then flip back w/out removing so - no more lost mittens! Not sure why this says men’s - they do run a little large but anyone can wear them I think!
Warm but takes time to get used to them
I bought these to use as the second layer over gloves while running. Since there is no separate thumb cap, these mittens can rotate, which can be a distraction. It took a while to figure out how to keep them in position. Also, carrying a water bottle by hand can be problematic. I thought I would return them, but after a few uses I felt I could use them effectively. I used them as the only layer running below 40 degree weather. My hands stayed warm. I also used them as a second layer over a pair of smartwool gloves in temperatures below freezing, and they did the job.
Nice running mitten
I was looking for a pair of mittens to run in. These have worked nicely. They have no thumb or finger holes, they just fold over your hands. I have used them when it’s as low as 10 degrees and they still keep my hands warm. For those 30 degree days when you need gloves at the beginning of the run but not at the end, they are great. They just push up onto your wrists. My only reason for not giving 5 stars, they are made of fleece and collect puppy hair.
Runs extremely small
As someone that ditches their gloves a few minutes into a cold run, I love the idea behind these. I have to exchange mine, though, because even though I wear a small in every other glove brand, these are TINY. It's a shame they're packaged in a way that doesn't allow you to try them on before buying.
Convertible socks for hands
While these are warm they are just socks for your hands. There is no place for articulated thumb so forget holding even a dog’s leash or accessing watch buttons during workout. The convertible top does not stay closed. Other running mittens have additional elastic or even a bit of Velcro to hold together but these do not. Also the double fleece is not stitched together near the finger tip opening which is either an error on my pair or a product design flaw.
Great for all weather runners!
My wife uses these to keep warm while running and takes advantage of the adjustable warmth "settings." I would recommend for any all weather runner who needs to keep warm in the winter.
These mittens are exactly what I need!
My thumbs were always getting extremely cold when I wore gloves anytime the temp dropped below 40 (which it frequently does in the western suburbs of Chicago.) Tried using a regular pair of mittens with my thumbs tucked into the finger section, but that didn't help much, and it made the mittens too snug on my hands. These mitts work great! As other reviewers have noted, probably best to order a size larger than you might think you need. My hands aren't that big, but the large fits perfectly. I'll be ordering a pair of the wind/water resistant mitts for when the temp drops below freezing or it's windy, as my hands still do get cold in those conditions. It's not the fault of the mitts, that's why there are two different varieties of them.
