Why We Like The Topwater 120 Kayak

We like to get out farther and for longer in the Old Town Topwater 120 Kayak. Designed specifically for anglers, this ultra-stable kayak features the DoubleU hull that maximizes your ability to cruise quietly across the water instead of spooking the fish. Whether you cast from either the high or low setting of the ElementAir seat or from the comfortable EVA deck pad that's designed to give you traction, the Topwater is specialized for long days of fishing comfort. An oversized stern tank works with the hull to secure plenty of gear, from your flies and alternative rig options to your lunch and extra layers. Three rod holders—one of which faces forward—let you go hands-free to paddle while onboard rod and tackle storage ensures you make it to your favorite hole with your gear at-the-ready.

Less the impressed by the seat

I'm so bummed about this kayak. It's pretty close to being fantastic, but the more time I spend on it, the more I hate the seat. I did raise it up in the rear and that helped a bit, but there is zero padding. After 2 hours I start to get really uncomfortable. I should have gotten the Sportsman 120, that seat has paddling at least. And apparently that seat is not available for purchase. Bummed.

All round solid fishing kayak

I recently purchased the Topwater 120 to fish lakes in the Raleigh area, and couldn't be more pleased. The boat is very stable, and can easily stand up to fish. If you are on the larger side 220lbs or more you may have some balancing issues when there is a little wake. The platform to stand is on the smaller side, so if looking for more room you may want to look at the Predator series. I initially bought for myself, but my wife has gone out and enjoys kayaking so much we will be buying another Old Town product very soon.

Solid Fishing Kayak

My one year review of the Topwater 120. Pros: very stable and roomy platform, paddles quite well for a wide kayak, rod holders, storage hatch, hull seems made of high quality durable material. Cons: difficult to hold boat position in any type of wind (which means you must invest in rudder kit) I had to anchor much more frequently than I wanted. The seat is fairly comfortable but seems to be a notch below the quality of the rest of the kayak. Seat can be prone to tearing along the seams. Kayak is a bit awkward to carry using the rear handle, which is offset to accommodate the rudder (minor issue). Perhaps a second handle would be helpful to balance lifting the kayak from the stern. Overall a very nice solidly built fishing kayak that should last for years.

Was it tested ?

Why would Old Town make the rear handle in this configuration ? Yes it seems like a small issue, but after purchasing the kayak and going to the lake if I had known that it was going to become the huge hassle that it has I would have purchased a different kayak. When you have a kayak of this weight then load it up with even a small amount of gear and lift it it immediately turns over onto its right side and you lose everything.... including patience. Seriously this is a deal breaker for me. And I have owned several Old town products in the past. I spent a lot of time watching videos and reading up on the kayak, and not one person expressed how bad it truly was. So I am here writing to let you know that if you are planning on carrying it any distance you can forget it. It is a two handed ordeal that will leave you cursing. Currently I’m trying to find a way to mount a second handle onto the rear of the kayak.

Great floating and fishing

Got this kayak a few weeks ago and love it. I’ve pretty much retired my canoe for anything. Even floated and carried all my fishing AND camping gear at the same time. Outstanding!

First Time Kayak Owner

Recently purchased my Topwater Angler 120. Old Town customer service was very friendly and helpful during the shipping process. The Yak was packaged nicely for shipping and arrived in a timely manner. I’m very satisfied with my purchase of this product. I only wish Old Town would upgrade the seat but other than that it’s a good kayak at a decent price.

Great Kayak

I tried my Old Town Topwater 120 and all I have to say is what a comfortable stable kayak. It won’t win a race but it’s not that slow. Tracks well into the wind and from the side. I stride to stand and made it but I want to practice when the weather is warmer. I wish the fish would of cooperated but getting out was awesome. #oldtown #topwater #comfortablestablekayak — in The Woodlands, Texas.

Ultra stable fishing machine

I have been very happy with my TopWater 120. The open cockpit is great for standing as well as fly fishing. Having the tracks made rigging very easy. The forward facing rod holder is also a great feature for tying lures and unhooking fish. Lots of room in the tank well for a cooler or crate. The hull design is very unique and makes this kayak extremely stable. The seat is very comfortable. Also, it’s light enough to cartop. All these features at a great price.

Functionally sleek

I got my topwater 120 a few weeks ago and I was so excited to get it out on the water to break it in. The first feature I tested was the stability, and I was amazed. I tried standing up and rocking back and forth and couldn't flip it. Compared to the predator series, I noticed that it was much lighter in the water and seemed easier to paddle with a tight turn radius. The boat handles well and with all of the neat features OTC added like the rod holders, tackle storage, and open deck design, it makes for one happy angler. I will be either getting a rudder kit or adding a Minn Kota motor to the back and make it that much better. I am excited to get it back out on the water to keep testing the abilities.
