CX403 Cycling Shoe

Lake’s top-tier road shoe gets an update in the new CX403. Featuring the same custom fit carbon fiber sole and supple kangaroo leather upper as its predecessor, the CX403’s closure system is redesigned and the added rubber toe bumper helps extend the shoe’s longevity for all the training and racing ahead this season.

Lake has worked long and hard on building the ultra-efficient Custom Fit carbon fiber sole. You may have had carbon-soled shoes in the past that didn’t quite fit, and if that’s the case, you recognize that ultimate power transfer is meaningless if your feet are in agony. But you can say goodbye to the era of compromise, as these are heat moldable, ensuring the perfect fit and incredible heel hold for maximum power transfer.

Solid and comfortable

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have worn these on a couple of rides. They are most comfortable and solid shoes imaginable. I have not heat molded them yet nor do I think it will be necessary. The blue/purple color looks fantastic. They keep my feet plenty warm in the winter. Will they be too hot in the summer? Time will tell but I ride in the early morning anyway. I'm completely satisfied with my purchase.

MASSIVELY DISAPPOINTED

The GOOD: toe box is roomy, BOA dials are top quality and adjust in both directions, can mount cleats far enough rearward to accommodate my long toes. The BAD: can't form carbon around bony prominences. Most shoes your foot sits ON TOP of carbon fiber sole. These Lakes, as well as Bonts, your foot rests INSIDE a "dish" of carbon fiber. From the ball of your foot back around your heel, the carbon fiber is going half way up your foot, unlike most shoes that have leather, fabric or Lorica that adapts and forms to your lumps, bumps, vessels and nerves. These have rock solid carbon fiber encasing your foot, and unless your foot is close to the ideal foot shape that Lake engineers are imagining they aren'tgoingto work for you either. I followed instructions explicitly for 3 moldings and can't get it to form to my foot. There are several warnings provided with shoes regarding overheating and over stressing the carbon that I am afraid to crack/break it. Have ridden these on trainer 3X and now and have bruises where rear BOA dial is. If you expect to be able to mold these like an Intuition ski boot liner, you can't, not even close. If you try to form these with a vacuum or without your foot in them ,you will damage them and void any warranties. SUCH AN UNCOMFORTABLE SHOE. Also, since it's been 45 days since purchase, BACKCOUNTRY is strictly enforcing their no exchange policy, so I'm stuck with them. If you get these, put them through the wringer within 30 days or you will be stuck too. I would recommend, as with ski boots, to get them at your local shop that actually provides customer service. BACKCOUNTRY had a decent price, but with zero customer service and no way to get these to work for my feet, I now have $350 paperweights. I really wanted these to work, and thought they would based on reviews, but its not even close. Good luck, hope this helps you.

These shoes run small

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

First off, these shoes run 1/2 to a full size smaller than the 402 model it replaces and possibly narrower. I have middle of the road medium 43.5 size feet but had to size up to 44 for the 403s and I possibly should have sized up to 44.5 or got the wide version based on the following. There is a point where the outside of my foot touches where the carbon sole gets thick leading to the arch. This is comfortable when cycling but if I walk in these shoes there is painful carbon on bone contact. Example, walking or standing around for 5 to 10 minutes prior to the ride is painful. Since the carbon is so thick in that area, there is no way to heat mold the sole to fit better. To be fair, I have the same issue with the 402 generation although it is a little less noticeable because that generation sizing runs larger. Note, I also have the Assos variant of the 402s which do not have the sole issue at all in the standard 43.5 size.

403’s

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

When I first got the shoes , it took three times to mold them and get it really right. Now it’s really the only shoe I ride on. I have really nice high-end shoes from other brands. None of them feel like the lake product to me and the company is really easy to deal with, if you have any questions or you need to trade sizes, no questions were ask.

For me, absolutely perfect.

Perfect. That's how I'd rate these shoes. After trying many different brands, at many different price points, I've found the most comfortable shoe on the market. I've probably used these shoes for 800+ miles, and can't find anything wrong with them. in other shoes, I'd inevitably find hot spots or other aches on long rides, but not these. Out of the box, they fit my narrow feet without the need to heat mold them; and with each ride they have become more comfortable. The leather is very high quality, as is the whole construction. The price is a bit daunting. However, had I initially purchased them when I first became aware of them, I would have saved a ton of money over the years. They also have a shoe care kit that I purchased. With proper maintenance of the leather, I can see these lasting almost indefinitely.
