Test before going out on trail
I’ve been told by veteran Glacier National Park wildlife biologists that it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. I’ve used COUNTER ASSAULT it 3 times, effectively avoiding a close-up black bear encounter on the Mt. Wilson trail in Sierra Madre, CA. The most important thing to know about this stray is to PRACTICE using it before you go on the trail. The spray itself is very, very potent. If you don’t know how to hold it, how to press the release button, how to control the hard, heavy stream, then you won’t be effective in using it when you need it - and you’ll probably hurt your own eyes and throat.
Reviews REI reselling used product
Please do not sell used returned items as new, especially pressurized cans of bear spray. Went to store, asked for spray they put it in bag I came home then realized got a returned can that obviously was returned after a wildernis trip. Dangerous and very inconvenient to deal with two days before our two week trip
I've used it on bears, and me! It works
Not long ago, I had an adventure where I needed to deploy Counter Assault on a bear. It was a humid, August night, and Mr. Bear had been coming around our house, and the neighbors house for a couple of days. About 2 A.M., I heard him on our back porch, so figuring he was a bit close to the house, I grabbed my spray, and opend my back door to say hello to the bear. He was about 8 to 10 feet away, so I gave him two 1.5 second doses of spray. Mr. Bear turned away and walked back into the forest. Now, the back door to our house opens into our bedroom, and the wind blew a bit of spray back into our bedroom. I can attest to you the spray worked on my wife and me. We both started coughing, and our noses began running uncontrollably. Our eyes didn't suffer too much, but the effects worked on us, and I'm about 1/2 the weight of Mr. Bear. I think he may have been upset with me when I deployed the spray, but we remained friends for a few months before he finally left the neighborhood. He was a beautiful bear.
Yup. Turns out there's something in that can.
If you've ever wondered if this can would actually help protect you from an angry bear, let me assure you: this stuff is for real. I speak from experience after having a can explode in my back pocket while fishing in the backcountry of Glacier National Park. I was lucky in that I was able to dive into the lake before the 10.2 liquid oz mushroom cloud of death that was instantaneously evacuated from the can hit my lungs. My fishing buddy was not. However, turn around is fair play as I emerged from the freezing water covered in a very Trump-ian orange oily glaze of industrial strength bear mace. I quickly lost the ability to see as I tried to flush my eyes with water, which I later discovered was covered in a similarly shimmering orange layer of oil reminiscent of the Exxon Valdez disaster. After about 15 minutes, my buddy regained the ability to breath normally and was kind enough to point it out. I guess I kind of deserved it, but I then had to suffer, blind, for another 30 minutes in 50 degree water trying to flush my eyes while he went back to stringing fish. Or so he says, honestly, I never saw one. A few hours later, after regaining my vision and recovering from a mild case of hypothermia, I was able to see the humor in the situation and appreciate the fresh layer of skin on my face, arms, and legs that was newly exposed by my backcountry chemical peel. Bottom line: 5/5, would not recommend as a skin treatment. 3/5, would seriously consider taking my chances with an angry bear rather than spray one of these cans up wind
Sprays The Furthest!
I am a total fan! I never leave home without the 10.2 ounce size. It shoots nearly 40 feet which is twice as far as the ones in the grocery store. I live in Alaska, I hike and backpack all year around, and I live in the area that fish and game call "The bear factory". I went through 4 cans in 2022. They were just for close calls. I must have seen hundreds if not over a thousand bears last year and more than a dozen since April 1st. Nothing sprays harder or further and I have tried many other brands, and I trust and carry Counter Assault. (The smaller Counter Assault fires 32 feet max). I even have to carry it to the dumpster at my apt building because sometimes there is a bear I can't scare away since they get agitated around that giant used food cache. It may not be the cheapest, it shoots the furthest and it totally works. What's your life worth?
Accidental Discharge
The bear spray was gifted to me for protection years ago. I hadn’t a need to use it. Well today I used it…by accident. I had it ready to fire at a popular bear hangout I was cooking and taking a break at. I accidentally set it off on the side of my pack and myself. It has been hours so far. I am still burning and in incredible pain. It is an amazing product. The pressure and intensity is still effective after all this time.
Bigger is BETTER and I trust Counter Assault
In my 19 years of hiking in Yellowstone, I have used Counter Assault in two dangerous backcountry situations. I was charged by a bison bull that intended to run me down (starting from a significant distance away) during the rut and charged by a grizzly sow protecting her 2 YO offspring. This bear spray worked in both situations. I now only buy the larger 10.2 oz cans. In my mind, having more is better.
Better to have than not.
Didn’t spray the distance as advertised at forty feet, was more like twenty feet with no wind. Bought three cans, two to pack with us and one to test operation. Test can sprayed a noticeable twenty feet and the mist may have carried forty feet but nobody volunteered to be in front of said specifications to verify the spicy range. Did not have to use in real life bear charge but I guess it could be the best second line of deterrence in the event of bear defense.
Article in Alaska magazine verifies efficiency
When I was living in Alaska there was an article in the Alaska magazine that described an incident of the product efficienty working on a charging adolescent grizzly. I can say that my boyfriend decided just for fun to try it out and before I could stop him sprayed into the wind. We coughed for 45 minutes.
Bear Spray I trust
Confident that this bear spray works. I had formal bear training in Alaska. Counter Assault was the bear spray we used in training.
