Best performing, most comfortable flat shoes avail

I've used the Five Ten Impact VXi for the past two seasons and absolutely love them. I ride singlespeed and flat pedals exclusively, so the stiff soles and sticky rubber did a lot to keep my feet on the pedals and power to the rear wheel. The the Impacts are on the rigid side; they feel a lot like miniature boots. The Freeride Pro, by comparison, provide nearly the same stiffness in the sole but MORE stickiness and more flexible (and comfortable) uppers. These shoes feel like great skate shoes, but with less flex to them. And they fit way better than past Five Ten shoes. I've got close to 500 miles in mine this summer and I do not regret this purchase for a second!

Poor quality control

Second time I bought them. First time the rubber side started peeling off after one ride. Returned and reordered thinking maybe just that pair was faulty. Second time, shoe had a bubble on the sole that prevents them from sitting flat. Love the look and feel, but for the shoe price, they shouldn't have such early defects. Not sure if it's rei or five ten, but they should have better quality control before shipping to customers.

They stick like glue!

I’ve spent the last year riding clipless (SPD) pedals, and wanted to transition back to a flat pedals. I went on a 26 mile ride yesterday with these shoes, and I can honestly say they are amazing! I did the 26 mile ride in 2 hours, and averaged 13 miles per hour on my Specialized Rockhopper with 29” wheels, and my shoes stuck like glue to the Shimano PD-MX90 pedals. It was about 82-85 degrees out, and my didn’t feel overheated or too tight at all. I did change the insole out with a Specialized plus 2 insole, and it made the shoes all the better for it. I tried a size 12, but I knew that the size 13 was the way to go, and they fit like glove.

Best shoe I've ever ridden on

A good mountain bike shoe can make the difference between an amazing day of riding and a frustrating day of slips and blisters. I recently put the 5.10 Freerider Pro to the test while using it nearly every day for a few months on the trails surrounding Boulder Colorado. I tested the Freerider Pro primarily on the mountain bike trails near Boulder Colorado, but I was able to get a weekend in at the amazing IMBA trails at Curt Gowdy State Park in Wyoming. I have the amazing privilege of mountain biking as part of my job, so every day while at work I would change out of my regular hiking boots and lace up my 5.10 Freerider Pros. I would then head out on a mountain bike patrol of one of the local trails. Some rides were 15 miles of sunshine and dry trail conditions and some rides were 7 miles of mud and puddles. Over the course of the last two months I put almost 500 miles on my Freeriders. I’ve smashed my toes on rocks and roots, hiked my bike more times than I’d like to admit, and ridden these shoes in a variety of weather and trail conditions. Right out of the box the 5.10 Freerider Pros felt amazing on my feet. This initial feeling only improved with time. They’re as comfortable as just about any shoe I own. Not only are they comfortable, I think these shoes look great! Most outdoor gear is trending in the direction of having very bright color options, but not these 5.10 shoes. For someone who prefers earthen tones to the usual neon outdoor clothing, the more muted colors on the 5.10 Freerider Pros made me feel right at home. The Freerider Pro features a weather-resistant synthetic upper and an impact-resistant toe box. The impact-resistant toe box saved my toes on multiple run-ins with roots and rocks. The weather-resistant and durable upper shoe shows few signs of wear after months of riding and kept my feet dry on all but the wettest days. In my opinion the 5.10 Stealth S1 outsole is the best all-mountain outsole on the market. I never had a doubt about whether my shoes would slip off the pedals. Not only do you feel secure when riding, but these shoes are great for hiking in too. I know you’re supposed to stay in the saddle, but sometimes you just have to push your bike! Despite my shower of praise for the 5.10 Freerider Pro, I do have a few areas the shoe could improve. First, the ventilation: these shoes are hot and don’t breathe very well. If your feet sweat a lot, you’ll need some thin socks to avoid wet feet. My feet rarely sweat, but wearing my usual wool socks I could feel them getting hot after shorter rides on warm days. Second, the laces on these shoes could improve. They aren’t very durable and they are hard to sufficiently tighten. Luckily laces are cheap and easy to replace! As an added bonus, you can feel good about buying 5.10 and Adidas products. Adidas is regularly listed in the top 10 among the 100 most sustainable companies in the world. In addition, Adidas partners with multiple global NGOs focused on reducing ocean and air pollution. All in all, the 5.10 Freerider Pros are my new go-to mountain biking shoes, and I’ll continue to use them for years to come. When they finally wear out, I’ll replace them with the exact same shoe. The 5.10 Freerider Pro is the closest thing on the market to a perfect mountain biking shoe. A few small tweaks and I’d call it perfected. Cheers to you, 5.10 design team!

Believe the hype

The shoes are well built, look good (while clean), and are awesome on flat pedals. I had to change the insole to something with more arch support, and now they are very comfy. I immediately felt so much safer on my flat pedals with these shoes. It was like there was velcro on the bottom of my feet. Believe the hype. I recently had to walk my bike up a slick hill and found this to be the only flaw in these shoes (no grip on slick/muddy ground). I will buy these again once these wear out. This was the first time I purchased any five ten shoes, so I can’t speak to the difference between these and the regular free rider.

Awesome - until they weren't

Maybe I got the fluke pair - size 11 and these were perfect fit & felt comfy outta the box, awesome grip, nice & sticky - they ramped up my riding hugely. Failed in just 7+ months tho so I'm greatly unimpressed. That's only 650 miles 2/3 or 3/4 being just gravel access rds and no town / casual wear, bike only. At 7.5 months the inside 'leather' broke away from the sole & began splitting at the inside bend and toe area (see attached images). I'd expect this w/ more serious riding and crashing, but I have babie'd these. I ride 2-3x a week (some weeks none) so at $150 & having to find new shoes, I'm bummed. Only other con is this is not a great winter bike shoe. These are not junk - well made, stylish, function, not junk and worked well until they failed, but I see no reason to spend $150 on them again when I the $80-100 versions get nearly identical review. Contacted 5-10 about this but no replies so if they don't support, I can't see why I would again either. Next...

I really like this shoe…

it feels good on the foot. It’s comfortable on the inside and armor tough on the outside. After a dozen or so rides, banging into rocks and such, they’ve taken my abuse well. Most surprising, the toe box has a good amount of protection from impacts. The “stealth” sole has been as advertised. It’s sticky, even when dirty (how could it not get dirty, you’re mountain biking) and has not yet shown any signs that my pedal pins are chewing it up. As for the sizing, I wear size 12 in Nike and Adidas runners and 11.5 in Keen and Merrell. For this shoe the 11.5 fit me best. I would buy them again.

Good while they lasted

Great shoe for riding flat pedals, however the sole on one shoe began to wear quite early and only go worse with time. Probably got one full season out of the sole before they deteriorated.

Strange defect in my pair

I found an odd defect in my Five Ten Freerider Pro mountain bike shoes right out of the box. I have plantar fasciitis and so I always examine the insoles. Underneath the insoles, in both shoes, I found a random assortment of loose strings pinned down with little pieces of masking tape. They were stitched into the side, several inches long. Right, so it seems like a small detail, but you know what, for $150, there ought not to be some random defect. I returned them straight away--wasting valuable time to run stupid errands--and will look elsewhere for shoes. Several associates are REI were completely perplexed upon sight of the strings.

great shoe

Coming from clipless I was afraid of the shoe being to soft and flimsy. I was wrong the flex is perfect balance, a bit stiffer than the reg freerider. The reinforced toe box is amazing as I have tested it a few times and my toes never felt the impact.
