Worth a consideration
This foam mat will be a great fit for some of my adventures but not all. The quality is good (have come to expect this of Exped), it’s extremely lightweight (321g), and it definitely added warmth and comfort (no touching the ground!) under my inflatable pad. However, it does not pack small and is of questionable comfort used alone.
Great sleeping pad for a weekend trip
The Exped Flex Mat LW is a super simple to use sleeping pad, all you have to do is unfold it. It features an egg carton pattern which I found helped to reduce the feeling of the ground beneath me. One feature I liked was being able to fold up a couple sections of the mat so that it was almost like having a pillow. It would be more suited for a weekend trip out of your car where you're not too concerned about space as it is rather large, so it's not as suited for long thru-hiking trips.
Is thicker and stronger than zlite
I had a zlite for 7 years. It’s worn. This is like a zlite, but much STRONGER. Meaning I believe it’s better suited for heavier individuals. I am 5’10” 218lbs and I feel it may be enough to use without an inflatable in conditions down to 30-40 degrees F. —-prior to this, I was pairing an inflatable with my zlite. Greatly considering just taking this in a warmer climate. —PRO TIP; this matches PERFECTLY with a crazy creek long back chair. Excellent combo for the backpacker. Not only does the Expad add extra padding to the chair, but when ready to sleep, you place the chair under the exped, now you have an increased R-value with padding from the Hex crazy creek chair. Super efficient.
Unbeatable at this price. Doesn’t deflate
As a former grunt this is the type of sleeping pad I’m used to but improved. There is nothing wrong with this pad, especially for the price. I tested more expensive pads in this style and I noticed no difference. I do prefer my Klymit inflatable if I have to choose one (it is double the price), however I noticed that combining the two(this under the Klymit) is the most comfortable sleeping set up there is. However fitting 2 sleeping pads into a backpack isn’t ideal. Again, for the price you can’t beat this.
Lightweight and Compact
I bought this sleeping pad to add an additional thermal layer for camping on top of snow during my summit of Mount Adams. I have another pad that is inflatable and insulated (Klymit) that I used as well. I bought this last minute since it was on sale. The combination of the two pads worked out great and I stayed perfectly warm all night in below freezing temperatures with my 0 degree sleeping bag. This was more so a last resort, make-shift sleeping arrangement and not the original intent of this sleeping pad. This pad works great for summer backpacking trips as it does fold down to a reasonable size. It fits great in the bottom buckle area of Osprey backpacks. I will say if you're coming from an inflatable sleeping pad to this one, it does take some getting used to as it is more firm. Overall, if you're looking for a lightweight option for warmer, summer nights and are willing to relinquish some comfort, this pad will work out well for you.
Nice & light basic pad
Perfect for summer use when weight is a factor or as a base pad under another to add R value. Not a lot of comfort. If you don’t mind hard surfaces and are young this is a great pad. Would use on a quick overnight backpacking trip when trying to go light and fast. A little concerned about potential failure at folds. Seems thin and likely to tear with use. Overall it’s a nice basic very light pad.
Newbie - need more padding
Perhaps, as a newbie, this is more about me than the pad, but I found this pretty difficult to sleep on. Not only does it add virtually no softness to the tent platform I slept on, it made that terrible creaking styrofoam sound everytime I turned. I do move a lot when I sleep. Anyway I'm back at REI looking for an inflatable pad or something to either add to this pad or replace it completely. Oh also it is incredibly wide and a little silly/ difficult on narrow trails.
Gave me bruises
I used this by itself on soft ground. It was painful and gave me bruises the next day. Would not recommend.
Pretty good if you’re tall and/or on a budget
It’s really wide and long, this pad is more for weekend trips than for backpacking. Offers almost no padding but it gets the job done, better than no padding at all. If you’re looking for something better and lighter with more padding I recommend the nemo switch back. I bought that for my wife and it’s far more comfy.
Cushions well, inexpensive, lightweight, easy
only just arrived so not tested for real, but this seems a nice pad of its kind. Even the medium is plenty long for a person 5'5". I just lay down on top of concrete with it under me, and the hardness was nicely tempered. I've been using a similar style zigzag Thermarest pad under a Thermarest self-inflating one, and after last outing I decided I wanted to try two of these simple zigzag fold up ones and see if it works as well for a padded sleeping surface, without the fuss of having to deflate & roll up the self-inflating one. I was already carrying that on the outside of my pack, so the size difference doesn't matter. I suspect I'll like this just as well, and breaking camp will be quicker. This pad is a tiny bit stiffer foam than the Thermarest zigzag one, so I'll put this one on the bottom.
