Questionable quality, small tear after minimal use
I ordered this for commuting purposes during winter to work. I ride 30 mins each way (60 mins a day) from my home to downtown San Francisco. Ordered mid-October 2021, and have had light use of it, and today January 7th 2022 (less than 3 months of ownership/use) it's starting to show wear and tear - I noticed the seam has come undone, rendering this not waterproof!!! Now I'm sure this could be easily fixed with some superglue but I'm frankly quite disappointed with the quality of this item. The price point is high, and I chose Ortlieb because of the reputation yet the gravel-pack might not be as durable as the other bags which are actually heavier and feel thicker in terms of the material. Now I just put my laptop in there without any bags, and if the edge of my laptop caused the seam to come undone, that's also shocking to see how poorly it holds up. The edges aren't sharp like a knife. I'm going to return this item for a different Ortlieb; hoping this will endure longer than 3 months. RIP.
Great Panniers from Ortlieb
I have a friend who has the Gravel-Pack Panniers and he uses them all the time. I had to buy a set for myself and see what he liked so much about them. I used them recently on a two- night bikepacking trip in the Cherokee/ Pisgah National Forests and I wasn't disappointed. I have a Marmot 30 degree sleeping bag that unfortunately isn't very packable from a bikepacking perspective. I was able to fit the sleeping bag, down sleeping bag booties, and my sleeping attire in the one pannier. In the other I was able to fit my hammock setup and rainfly, stove, food and some other items with room to spare. I really like the fact that they are fully waterproof. It didn't rain on this trip but the manufacturing quality speaks for itself. They mounted to my Salsa Alternator HD rack quickly and easily. I really liked that the lower clamps stayed tight and didnt move on the chunky gravel descents. I was concerned about rattling so I added frame protector tape to the mounting and contact areas of the rack. Aside from a slight rattle on some rougher surfaces it wasn't an annoying rattle like it may have been had I not added the tape. The only issue I had was remembering that I had them on the bike as I snagged a road barricade and a post made of stacked stones, and when pushing the bike up a trail to get to a campsite that didn't allow bikes it was awkward because the bag kept hitting the back of my legs. I wouldn't lower my rating because of this though. They do not come with a carry strap, but for me that isn't a concern. Overall I would recommend them. They carry lots of gear and they sit pretty solidly on the rack, are waterproof, hold up well against briars and thorns, and have the reflective panels that help you be seen at night.
Love these bags!
a little expensive but worth it. I've gone down on gravel with these and they didn't even get scratched.
I love these bags!!!
They are the perfect size. Any bigger and we'd overstuff and overweight them and being intended a front bags, weight and stability are an issue. They are perfectly watertight, my food and clothes stayed dry for my entire pittsburgh to dc trip. I love them.
Waterproof bags, very easy to use
I bought these bags for a first time ever backpacking trip with the thought that I would use them for commuting later. These carried all that I needed for 5 days in the Natchez Trace (I packed as light as possible). These were very easy to use, quick to take on and off the bike. They are also reliably waterproof- we got a decent amount of rain including a downpour & all items inside stayed totally dry. Highly recommend these pannier bags.
Perfect Panniers!
These were just delivered, and they are exactly what I was hoping for! I previously had a pair of Ortlieb back-roller panniers, but they were too big and heavy for what I needed. When these bags came I thought there must be only one bag, they were so light weight! Nope, two bags, with the great Ortlieb mounting system. They are smaller than the back-roller bags, but perfect for errands. I don't plan to bikepack any more, but don't be put off by that label if you are looking for a pair of smaller, well-made, very lightweight panniers for everyday use.
Great Bags!
Used these bags on my first bikepacking trip and they preformed flawlessly. It rained hard the first night and not a single drop of water was found in either bag the next morning. They do add quite a lot of width to the bike but the storage volume is great! Adjustable mounting system works very well too.
Not good for Rocky/bumpy roads.
I used these on the great divide. I would not recommend them for extremely rough roads. The bottom hangers don’t stay in and one broke. I was able to bungy it.
Classic has more durable fabric
I purchased these panners a few months ago to use on a low rider front rack for a 50 day 2500 mile tour. I used classic rollers in the rear. I wanted the classic roller smaller front version but was not able to find them in stock. As far as the attachment system, this pannier was almost identical to the classic with the exception on including two bottom hooks on each. I only needed one. The panniers did maintain waterproof through some heavy rain. However, the fabric does not appear as durable as the classic fabric. At tour end I do notice some damaged spots on the fabric even though they are not complete thru tears. This is clearly an inferior fabric relative to the classic. I have used the classic for this tour, a number of other shorter tours and everyday commuting and grocery getting for about 3 years with no signs of damage. Not sure why this panner is gravel specific; if anything many a gravel specific pannier should have more durable fabric? I would like to exchange for the classic front if it is available.
not bad.. not great
i bought these a little over a year ago for a cross country long term tour... theyve done great... and love them... they could use adjustable straps on the sides for when theyre a little over loaded... after 1 year of DAILY all day every day use... its time to replace them... dozens of small holes on the bottom outside corners... but thats to be expected with the wear and tear ive put on them... i do wish theyd used the same material as the classic panniers... i bought a larger set of classic panniers for the rear at the same time... and they still look great... no holes or busting seams.. all in all theyre good panniers... but i will say... if i could find a comparable size in the classic style in BLACK id switch... i like to keep my panniers matching.. and my full rig is all black... the high visibility panniers are nice and all... but if someone doesnt see me on a 60cm bike loaded down with gear... its because they werent paying attention anyway... im not interested in a neon yellow or blue pair of panniers... so gaudy...🤣
