Stabilizing and Comfortable Poles
These poles are great! The ergonomic cork grip is extremely comfortable and allows for a sturdy grip in different conditions. They also have a wrist loop which allows you to put your hands through to grip the handles, and as I am clumsy, I really appreciated this feature so that if I were to slip, I would still have control of the pole and it would not slip away from me down a ravine. Plus they are adjustable, so you can have it as loose or as tight as you want depending on the hike. They are height adjustable so they work for both 5'2" self or my boyfriend's 6'0" height. They are easily adjustable so if you are on uneven ground, it wouldn't take too long to adjust it. They come with two different types of baskets which are quick and easy to add to the poles on a hike. I was using these in light snow and ice so I only had the small baskets on, but if you were snowshoeing or were hiking in some deeper snow, I'm sure the snowbaskets would help considerably. They aren't the LIGHTEST poles out there, but aren't too terrible either. I strapped them to my daypack once we hit some non-snowy/icy conditions on the trail and I barely felt the weight. I really wish I had these when I was backpacking Isle Royale. So much granite and exposed rocks that I'm sure these would have come in handy. They would also come in handy to help pitch an emergency shelter if needed. I would highly recommend these as an addition to anyone's gear!
These poles are amazing!
These poles are amazing!!! I used them to hike down to the bottom of Grand Canyon with all my camping gear, 25+ pounds and I am a 60 yr old woman who's never done a hike like that! They were a life saver! The cork handles were amazing and I had no problem with sweaty hands. I did also purchase the rubber tips for these which I believe were crucial as there was much rock with thin sand cover so the rubber helped with gripping the surfaces. I never experienced slippage and the poles stayed tight at the length I set them. I have never used poles before but I was amazed at how fast I became a four-legged animal! Couldn't have done the trek without these!
Great poles
Bought a pair for both my wife and I. We did a lot of research and looked at the reviews. It appears that most of the negative reviews on these poles were related to the locks not working. But in further research other reviewers highlighted the ability to further adjust the locks. Further, REI must have noticed and the cashier made sure that we knew how to adjust the locks. We have only had a chance to use once, but they worked great. I have never used poles before but I found them to be very helpful. I considered less expensive poles but considered these as mid-level for the level of activities we usually partake. So far we are very satisfied.
Good but has one issue
Good solid poles. The new locking mechanisms are nice. My last pair lasted for 10 years and I expect these will, too. The fixed end of the wrist strap is too long and I'm a man with big hands and wrists. I like to put my weight on the straps. When the straps are at their shortest my wrists hang well below the grips. And when I put weight on the wrist straps they slip and get longer. I pulled the pin to remove the wrist strap and examine it. There is no way to shorten it unless I double the strap over and sew it together. I'll have to think of a way to stop the strap from loosening. REI member for 40 years.
These Trekking Poles are AWESOME!
I used these trekking poles to do an uphill, rough terrain, 3hr hike at a National Park. The poles are very sturdy and assistive, which I needed per my still somewhat weak "year ago" broken leg.
Excellent product
I me thought I would be happy about hiking with a pair of poles. But here I am. I brought these poles with me to Amicalola Falls state park for some hiking where I managed a 10 mile hike with 2200 feet of elevation that turned out to be a breeze.
Pole broke in half on second outing
Caution--these poles are not sturdy enough for serious hiking. On the second hike used, my husband's pole bent and snapped, causing him to fall on the trail. Luckily, he only suffered some bruises and scratches, but it could have been so much worse!
One thing that SHOULD come with the sticks..
Just received these, so my rating is based on limited use. They seem sturdy, and I like the quick release for adjusting and collapsing them. This is an advance over the old twist and lock feature of older sticks. It would be helpful to make it very clear that they do NOT come with "Rubber walking tips." Yes they come with baskets for walking in snow and sand, but those are NOT the most frequent way to be be hiking. If you order these, order some of those rubber walking tips if you will be walking on hard surfaces (trails, rocky surfaces, etc).
20 miles on the AT
Most difficult hike of my life... Mix of poor land navigation, water planning, and the goal of going for speed to intercept hikers 10 miles ahead.. These trekking poles were the MVP of all my gear.. over 4k ft elevation gain.. saddle peak after saddle peak.. These things gave me more than the support i needed when my feet we kicking and flopping ahead of me. Cork grips remained comfortable as i put half my weight on them during ascents and the knob design tops made them easy to transition into for descents. Also very good locking mechanism that i've seen in more expensive options. Happy trails.
Why are there no tips?
These poles do not come with tips. Much of my walking occurs on paved surfaces and I need tips! (They do come with snow baskets and trail baskets, which have no need for.) Not only are there no tips, but there is no indication of what size tips go with the poles. This information is necessary to buy tips that fit. The only tips that REI sells are accompanied by reviews complaining that they fall off the poles, so I'm hesitant to buy them. So I have incomplete poles and no guidance on how to make them usable. It would have been easy to include tips or at least say what size tips the poles require. I love REI, but I'm disappointed.
