Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Less expensive but comparable to Lululemon
I used to exclusively workout and run in Lululemon PaceBreaker or Surge shorts, but I gained some weight and couldn’t comfortably fix in those shorts anymore and as I didn’t want to invest +$70 for “temporary” workout shorts, I gave these REI Active Pursuits a try. These shorts were great, very comparable with Lululemon. The fit and material was great with functional details. I got these on sale which made it quite a steal, I can get two of these for the price of one Lululemon shorts. I wore a size Large in the PaceBreaker but got a size Medium in the REI shorts. I’m 5’6”, currently 180 lbs, normally I’m around 165 lbs. I won’t go back to Lululemon if REI keeps making great products like this. Purchased October 2018
My go to shorts for all outside activities
REI Active Pursuits 7” shorts are my go-to shorts for any activity from mowing my lawn to hiking the Grand Canyon. I have done it all in these shorts. My wife recently said “You know to do own other shorts. You don’t have to wear those all the time.” So I obliged and just bought another pair in the granite peak blue color. Ha. Seriously great, functional shorts. I’m 5’10” and 150# and the mediums are great for me. Highly recommend.
nice solid shorts
Nice, easy to clean/ dry, and wear shorts that go with everything. The side pocket fits an iPhone 12 mini perfectly (with a case on). The liner was annoying and unnecessary, so I cut it out. I skateboard in these and they’re very tough for slides on my butt. I’ve found that they’ll stretch about one size after a few weeks. They’ll feel tight at first. After having them for about a month, I’m deciding to go a size smaller. It would be nice if they breathed better. I like taped seams the best. Rei has the best customer service of any company. Super thankful to not have to think too much about purchases. I just get what I like and go.
Great Travel and Everyday Shorts
Took two pairs of these on a 6 month backpacking trip around Southeast Asia and they held up great. Used for daily casual wear, but also as swimshorts. They don't dry as fast as swim trunks, but they will dry overnight if you hang them. I'm a big fan of the 7" inseam. They're also durable – I returned home with no rips on either pair and only some sun fading on the black pair. I now use them as gym shorts for which they are adequate. The zippered pocket fits my iPhone 11 Pro perfectly, but not when I connect headphones with the adapter, which would be my only gripe.
Nice shorts, elastic drawstring?
Nice shorts. Feel great working out and running around. If I have to carry keys or a phone or anything they will slide down though. If I dive into water they will slide down. The drawstring doesn't help much because it is elastic, so I really have to crank down on it. Seems like an elastic drawstring kind of defeats the purpose of a drawstring. I seem to be in between sizes too. A small was too small and the medium is a touch loose. If they had a regular drawstring they'd be good to go, so I think I am just going to replace it myself.
Great fit for my gracious thighs
I’m a runner. But I was not blessed with a thigh gap. I caught these shorts by accident and thought why not. My phone fits perfectly in the zip pocket and doesn’t bounce around. I’m given 2 additional pockets for casual standing or stuffing whatever trail trinket I may find. They’re an appropriate length to wear at cafes after I’m done running without getting the odd stares of the older crowd. And the best part, my thighs don’t rub together! Good flexibility as well for when you’re finding your best foot for the next rock. My only bad thought is that I think the draw string may be the first thing that wears out. Hopefully I’m wrong. Cheers and happy running.
Waistband is a Dissapointment
This product is amazing fit wise! I absolutely love the feel, the liner, the material! However, I decided to return them due to the waistband. There's a few other comments on here about the waistband. It truly can't hold up the shorts under it's own weight. The drawstring in the waistband is elastic (why?) so it doesn't hold a good grip on your waist. Putting my phone and wallet in my shorts, I was constantly pulling my shorts up. Save your money and wait for the next generation of these shorts. @REI please replace this with a stronger/non-elastic drawstring for the waistband.
A Workout Staple
Bought these a month ago. Have both a 2021 iteration and the latest 2023 version. Especially when purchasing these at a sale price, these are a steal. Good craftsmanship. True to size. Never any chaffing. Mainly used for running, stationary bike, and hiking. But have also used for swimming despite no mesh in liner. Falls about 2 inches above knee caps. Liner just the right tightness so you still have anti ball crushing space but also do not feel like your junk is so visible through the shorts. No need for bigger name brand shorts. Nice small zippered pocket on right side for small valuables.
Very comfortable hiking shorts
Comfortable shorts for activity. They are a good length resting just above the knee. They feel like runners shorts but much better looking and comfortable. I have two concerns with them. 1. The pockets are too small. I like the zipper stash pocket but overall they are too small. I can barely fit my cell phone in one pocket. 2. I'm concerned about the strong to cench up the waistband. Seems very flimsy. Time will tell if it is one piece string or connected in the back like athletic shorts. Those come apart and render the shorts useless if you try to tie them tight. If these shorts aren't tied tightly, they slide down and may cause a scene. LOL
not great
I really want to like these shorts. They have all the right technical specs and they have glowing positive reviews. But I’ve worn these for several workouts, and they just aren’t working for me. The material is course and loud. Compared to Vuori, Patagonia, Brooks, they are uncomfortable. I actually had to put glide on my thighs because the material irritates them after 45 minutes to an hour. Also, they are very big to size. I am 6’0 195lbs, and I tend to fit somewhere between a 34-36” waist. I decided to upsize to a large based on previous reviews, and these are far too big in the waist for me. They would fit someone with a 38” waist easily.
