First of all, bear canisters are absurd. That being said many places one wishes to camp require them because people don't know how to hang a bear bag. However, incompetence is not avoided by a bear can. Just this last weekend I saw a different brand bear can (the black one) opened by a fox in the Adirondacks. I use this when I go to the Adirondacks, or other places where it is required. My camping buddies and I can fit 3 people's food for 4-5 days in it, but we rarely bring Mountain House or other dehydrated foods because they take up to much space and have too much salt (acid reflux for days!).
