has a chlorine taste, but not much
These don't have a terrible taste at all; they taste like any other tablets would: a slight taste of chlorine. Other reviews say they taste HORRIBLE!!!, this is NOT TRUE. they are very compact and lightweight. I put these in my emergency kit (not all of them, just a few)because they work great.I also keep these in my "not-so-emergency-food/water" section. I haven't used them often, but I use them mainly for purifying water from a stream when i don't bring enough water from home. one piece of advice is: keep them in a small hard plastic container (still in original foil). I use a cleaned out icebreakers sours container thing. the only problem is the taste, and even then, it is not strong at all.
more on airline travel
I wanted to comment further on flying with this product. I'm leading a trip to India soon and after reading all the comments here and elsewhere had decided that this was the product that worked the best for my group. But the message about the TSA not allowing the tablets onboard was worrisome. I contacted the company (Katadyn) about this. Katadyn argues that the TSA makes exceptions for prohibited items that could be considered "medicinal," and because Micropur "is used to make unsafe water safe to drink to prevent disease from waterborne organisms," it would fall under this category. I thought this might be helpful to others who might be considering the product.
Great product, but learn about it first.
1) Make it easier to open by using nail cutters to make a tiny slit in the frame around each tablet. Use a permanent pen to mark the slit for easier location. 2) Put the packet of tablets with a laminated instruction card into a little hard sided case. 3)Learn the reason for the 4 hr, 30 minute, and 15 minute wait times. It depends upon what you suspect is in your water. 4) Learn how to treat cloudy vs. clear water. 5) Learn how to adjust for treating warm vs. cold water. 6) Before you follow posts which suggest diverting from this product's instructions or use alternative purification methods- learn the facts.
Tastes good, no problems
I always carry these with me, and used them in a setting when I was out of water and had about 7 miles to go, much of it steep (I'd gotten a bit lost and spent quite a bit more time than expected on the hike). I could have made it out without extra water, but it would have been pretty uncomfortable, so I decided to treat the water for an hour and take my chances. The water had no noticeable taste, and I didn't get sick. So while I certainly wouldn't recommend drinking it without the 4 hour wait, I can vouch for the taste, and definitely recommend it for emergency use (or if you can treat water overnight for the next day.)
Micropur is the answer
I have been using Micropur as my primary treatment method for over a year now. It is obviously very light and easy to use, with the exception that the foil packs are a little hard to open - I recommend a small scissors like on a multi-tool or knife. I typically only wait 30 minutes unless the water source is really suspect. The only time that I have noticed the taste is when the water is warm. For those cases where taste is an issue, I am planning to add a Aquimira Frontier Pro Filter to my setup - the activated carbon will eliminate most taste. This product is also a good purifier supplement to knock viruses out of pump filtered water, which only takes 15 minutes.
Requires 4 hours and kills cryptosporidium
Very compact, lightweight, and long shelf life. I carry Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets as a backup water treatment method, in case my primary method fails. These tablets require 4 hours time to work after putting in your water, and they need to be used in an opaque bottle (or protected from light) to work. Consider bringing extra water bottle(s) and treating water in the evening so it is ready by morning. They kill cryptosporidium, which some other chemical treatment methods do not kill. Water treated with Katadyn Micropur Purification Tablets tastes a little salty to me, but tastes better than iodine treated water.
I guess it works.
I use this product as a backup in-case my filter stops functioning, or if the water is particularly scary. However, the last time I took these out of my little emergency kit, I saw that about half of them had been crushed and in powder form they had broken through small holes the shards poked in the foil. Fine product, but being something so critical as water treatment for backpackers, they should come in a slightly more durable container, something that can hold up to the pressure of being packed snugly and the possibility of water saturation. If you're planning on using these exclusively, do yourself a favor and find some sort of hard case to put them.
Best water purification out there
I used these on a 15 day backpacking trip through the Sierra Nevada Mountains and they worked very well. I used it with a 1 Liter water bottle and it tasted like normal water. It is very easy to use. Fill up your bottle with 1 Liter of water, add tablet, and wait an hour. After that it's good to drink. No need to do any tiresome pumping. Tips: I tried a smaller water bottle and it tasted like chlorine, so make sure to use 1 liter of water with it. FYI, after 3 days of use, your pee starts to turn bright yellow. Luckily, it goes away soon after you return home.
Health vs. aesthetics?
I carry these as a back-up, in case of filter problems, which has happened to me several times (including yesterday!). Never gotten sick afterwards, and, in a few instances, would have been in serious trouble without clean water. So, as a safety/backup measure, these are awesome. On the other hand, I am very surprised to read reviews saying there's no aftertaste. Every time I've used these, the water has had a nauseatingly strong taste of chlorine. Not like tap-water, but like diluted bleach: completely disgusting. Anyway, a great item to throw into your survival kit, just in case.
The go-to solution for water purification
These tablets are the standard method used by 35,000 Boy Scouts per year to purify water at Philmont. They really do NOT result in bad-tasting water -- they just leave a faint chlorine taste, and if you leave your water bottle open for a few minutes after treatment, most of the chlorine taste dissipates. I have taken two different crews of boys to Philmont, and have seen hundreds of the tablets used in the process with no complaints from he boys...and if something was wrong, believe me, the boys would talk about it.
