I'm surprised REI can make a bike this good

I went to REI looking for a bike to serve me in commuting during the school year. I am no stranger to REI or bikes so when the deal of a lifetime came around I couldn't pass it up. In short I got this bike for 454 even though the asking price is 800. Initially I was not a fan of the wide bars and the grips. They've grown on me for now but I do see them getting switched out in the future. The breaks are also really good. At first they needed to be bedded in and there was not much modulation but after a couple months they have broken themselves in. They have decent modulation and awesome power as all shimano hydraulic breaks do. I see them being low maintenance and reliable which is a nice thing considering this is a commuter bike. The group set was also another aspect of this bike that pleased me. The REI bike techs know what they are doing and got the limits and cable tension on both the front and rear spot on. Shifting has been smooth as butter, the range is great, and the shadow rear derailer on this bike is really awesome. There is very limited chain slap when going over rough road, riding stairs, or bunny hopping. I like to see that and only had my chain drop once. The pedals are high quality alloy pedals that allow you to get a good purchase on them. The saddle is a really unique and comfortable. I would buy it and put it on my other bikes as well. That brings me to the frame. The frame was the thing about this bike that left me skeptical when walking out the store. I am not sure who makes it (I think it might be whoever diamondback is associated with) and I wasn't entirely sure if it was going to hold up to abuse. I am hear to say that this frame is very strong and 99 percent of the people who get this bike will have 0 issues with it. What I have learned from riding it is that the rear is rather compliant for an aluminum frame and soaks up road buzz well. The bottom bracket is stiff even when I'm really putting down the power down. The geometry is good and gives the rider confidence on the bike. The paint scratches extremely easily, I am not surprised that in the store it was scratched, its kind of pathetic and needs to be addressed. The big thing that I like on this bike are the thru axles front and rear. They do not have quick releases and can only be removed with an hex key. This is a great feature because it gives you some peace of mind knowing that when you just lock up your bike real quick when running errands that some bloke isn't going to come over and pull off your rear wheel. Lastly there are the tires and wheels. I think the tires are fine, they are grippy and they have those reflective rings on them which is a nice touch, I'm just curious to see what the puncture protection is like, I am assuming its decent. It's not really a big deal though because as soon as these wear out om putting some gatorskins on it. The wheels are kind of a question mark. They seem to be nice, light, double wall rims which is good, but I am not to sure how bullet proof they are. I would have liked to see a wheel from wtb on the bike. The hubs are good, the rear is dead silent and the engagement feels quick and strong. The front is also good, these are joyetech hubs so I would assume they will hold up pretty well. Overall good bike for the money and great bike for the price I got it at. I think that it is specked really well and thoughtfully, this bike will be great for really everyone who buys it as long as it is set up right and they don't take it off a big drops. This is coming from somebody who has biked across America and worked in local bike shops. I know a thing or two about bikes, and would say if you have a huge dividend pooling up at REI you should use it on one of these if you are in the market for a commuter bike the value is off the charts. REI you really surprised me here, you guys actually know how to do bikes. Oh and buy the way there are also rack mounts, somebody of a touring background can also appreciate.

Super disappointed at this price point

At $1k, the shifting should be buttery smooth. It's got the makings of a good hybrid bike: unless you're spending over $1,500 on a bike, the suspension fork isn't worth the extra weight. So, I thought this bike was on the right track. However, the derailleur and gear system is sub-par at this price point. The ride is okay, but I would never have purchased if I could have found a bike in my size elsewhere.

Love it!

Zero complaints after 100+ miles so far on this bike. With the (really good) 700c x 35mm Schwalbe tires that came on it, it's quick on the road and comfy on gravel. So far I've done ~30 miles on the C&O Canal towpath, 36 miles on the NCR rail trail (both smooth gravel trails here in Maryland) and various other rides. Put a topeak rack and bag on the back, ergon gp5 grips on the handlebars, added kickstand and water bottle holder, adjusted the seat height a bit, and used a plumbing tubing cutter to take about 1 1/4" off either side of the handlebars (they were a little too wide for my liking) and it is now perfect for me. Seat is surprisingly comfortable. And even though I put beefier bullhorn grips on, the grips that come with it are super comfy. 10/10 recommend.

Classy and sleek!

This the first bike I purchased by myself. I bought for my daughters too so we can go bike riding together. For the last two months, I am loving it every day. The looks is clean and sleek. The bike runs quiet. The build quality is sturdy and excellent. It is super light weight with professional finishing. I added lights and phone holder. My only complain is the seat. I would prefer a more comfortable gel seat. Other than that no complains. I would recommend it to anyone whose looking for a hybrid bike. Definitely worth the price. REI did an amazing job with this one!

Amazing Quality! Great Bike!

As with the rest of America I decided to buy a bike during the pandemic. Stopped in at the store to chat with the bike shop employees on what I wanted and they had this in the store that someone else purchased. Was sold instantly. Great smooth ride, amazing color, super light but durable. Cannot wait to ride this all summer. Gears seem smooth and the seat is comfortable. Great bike so far!

This bike is everything I hoped it would be!

I absolutely love this bike! Being relatively new to bike, I was looking for a hybrid bike that would allow me to commute to work with ease but also enjoy longer rides on the weekend. This bike fits my needs like a glove. I am able to bike to work fast, with minimal effort on paved paths. Paired with a rear rack and a pannier, I am set for my day! As for weekend recreational/leisure rides, this bike handles extremely well on paved and semi gravel paths. Overall, I am thoroughly impressed with this bike. I love it! Another plus is that is bike is gorgeous. The matte black with the simple reflective details on the wheels is perfection.

Great for everything

I’m not a hardcore biker by any means, but I love getting out there both on gravel trails and even some single track. I wasn’t looking to spend a fortune by wanted something that could double as a commuter bike, as well as something I could have fun with in my free time. This bike nailed is: Hydraulic Brakes, high end components, flat bars (this was a must for me), it also has the raise side bars in the handle which I use way more often than I expected. What stands out to me most is that this thing is faster with less effort, I feel like I am going 2x the speed with the same effort as my previous bike. All in all I can’t be happier. Been using it for 3 months now.

Awesome Hybrid

I am a "COVID Biker," someone who has never taken biking seriously as a mode of transportation until the pandemic hit. It took me a while to find anything in stock anywhere, and when I saw this one on REI, I just bit the bullet and ordered it based on the sizing chart and specs. The measurements are pretty accurate, so I would suggest that for anyone else buying a bike without seeing it first to measure your inseam length and then match it to the sizing chart for the best fit. As for the ride itself, it is smooth like butter. I feel like I can bike twice as much distance with half the effort compared to my old folding bike. It does get slightly bumpy though if you’re on uneven paths. The hydraulic brakes are very sensitive, and has saved me more than once from running into other bikers randomly stopping in the middle of a bike lane. The bar ends were a nice touch for switching up your hand positions or for going uphill. The black matte color is very minimalist, and I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on the bike. The only con is that it kind of scratches/scruffs easily. There were already a few scruff marks on it when I picked it up from the store, which is why I’m docking one star off. The bike was slightly more than I wanted to spend, but it’s probably worth it if I’m also using it to commute.

Best City Bike - Ever!

This bike is well designed for daily transportation. It is robust and ready to take on a regular commute. It is a comfortable ride with a nice stock saddle and ergonomic handgrips. The wide gearing provides flexibility for the variety of terrains encountered in different areas. The hydraulic disk brakes are the best I have experienced. They are smooth, easy to modulate, and require very little effort for impressive stopping ability. I am very impressed and satisfied with this bike, it is a perfect fit for my applications. I am a retired senior who rides for transportation on a daily basis in place of a car. I ride 10 - 20 miles on a typical day. I would not hesitate to recommend this bike.

Perfect Value in a Hybrid Bike

Before I go on a bit, let me say I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this hybrid bike. Like many looking at this bike (I imagine), I was hoping to strike a balance...for me it was between price, quality name/reputation, components (wanted a step above most basic), and build quality. I have been doing more road biking in recent years, and my 20 year old Specialized Hard Rock was just not built for that…besides being a TANK. I bought this bike a few days ago – fortunately at during their annual sale (still worth it at retail). Given I bought it during the COVID shutdown and I had not shopped for hybrids before, I had trepidation given no test riding right now. Given its REI, with their great satisfaction policy, I decided to take the risk after doing a fair amount of research. Learned there are variations on hybrids. Do you want a more comfy/upright, slightly slower ride that you can take just a bit further off-road? Then jump over to the CTY 2 bikes. I do mostly street riding with bike paths and the occasional gravel path, so CTY 1 Series was perfect for me. There are several reputable bikes/brands in this price range, but this model seemed to have a little more bang for the buck when I put them all side by side. Got the bike over the weekend (thanks for the great assembly REI), and did my inaugural ride yesterday. Planned on doing just a few miles, but before I knew it, clocked closer to 20 (95% road). It was a superb experience! Smooth on the road, gear switching was like butter, and love the disc brakes-where have you been all my life! In sum, I do recommend everyone do their own research, and wanted to share my initial impressions/recommendation.

Good for all kinds of roads

My fiance loves this bike (and has stopped stealing mine)! It's great for getting around the sometimes dirt, sometimes gravel, sometimes concrete roads in northern New Mexico. The people at the store were insanely helpful in narrowing down what we wanted, adjusting the bike perfectly, and giving us a ton of helpful information about what the differences between bikes were. So far, it's been around the city and on well maintained trails without issues. I wouldn't reccomend it for intense trails or mountain bike trails, but for everything else it's great
