Features

  • Water-resistant, windproof face fabric is sourced from a high-quality Japanese mill that uses 20-denier, 24 high-filament nylon fabric for a soft feel and high tear strength
  • Durable water repellent (DWR) finish fends off moisture and resists stains; strategically placed self-overlay on front and sleeves provides extra protection from the elements
  • Yarn is woven into an extremely tight weave that's dense enough to increase the downproof properties and tear strength
  • Lightweight underarm knit panels allow heat to escape for climate control; knit underarm gussets offer breathability and stretch
  • Large baffles at body front and back provide core warmth; thinner, smaller baffles on the inside underarm panels reduce bulk for easy layering under a heavier shell
  • 800-fill-power goose down provides excellent warmth
  • Durable water repellent (DWR) finish on soft-shell yoke, collar stand and zipper garage overlay slough off moisture
  • 5-panel hood has a 3D brim and multiple adjustments on both the opening and the rear hatband for a personalized fit; hood lies flat when you don't need it
  • Articulated, 3D fit naturally follows your body's shape, and the intricate construction eliminates binding typically found on the inside seams of jackets
  • 2 zippered chest pockets; 2 zippered hand pockets; 1 zip pocket on the sleeve; inside mesh pocket
  • Custom reflective ribbon at draft flap and inside pockets provides resistance to zipper snag and increases visibility in the dark
  • Elastic binding on cuffs and hood trap in warmth and seal out cold; bottom hem drawcords allow for adjustability
  • Reverse coil zippers; 26 in. Metaluxe® center front zipper with an ergonomic KUHL crest zipper pull

Solid Portland winter jacket

I'm a huge Kuhl fan. The Spyfire is really stylish, and warmer/more windproof than the previous year's model... which I returned after wearing once on a 40-degree day and freezing my butt off. I love the feel and lightness of the new version. Light rain ran right off. Previous model had no down to insulate hand pockets; new one does, though the down is in a more open compartment and seems prone to shifting. But for anyone who's doing serious winter anywhere much colder than Portland.... probably not your jacket unless you're incredibly warm-blooded. (I personally tried on a few 800 down jackets at the store, and found them to be a bit too much for me.) Two NOTES: 1) It runs VERY SMALL. I'm 5'7" and about 30 pounds overweight. I normally wear L - XL in jackets, depending on brand. Had to go to XXL for this one. 2) It's nearly $300. Other than for the style (which I love, and have already received a compliments on)... still not 100% convinced it's worth the money.

The strings that tighten the hem of the hood do not have the same draw string stoppers that the back of the hood has, and is shown in the pictures. For some reason the brick red picture doesn't have these stoppers, but it really should. This really makes the hem adjustment useless, as it's now impossible to make the string stay tight. One of the anchor points for the bottom hem adjustment string has come undone. Where the end of the string should be glued inside a corner of the hem itself, the string ripped out of the glue the first time I tried to adjust it. Down is already coming out of the hood, first day I wore it. Over all, I really enjoy the fit and how it looks. I've yet to feel how warm or windproof it really is. But I'm disappointed in Kuhl's quality control. Maybe the hood stoppers were a weight savings decision, in which case that's a dumb decision.

Most comfortable thing I’ve ever tried on

I tried this jacket on one day in REI and something happened that has NEVER ever happened to me before, in regards to an article of clothing. I legit thought about this thing the next few days. That’s how dang comfortable it is. I’ve never worn anything like it. For any army vets out there it’s kinda got the feeling of a Woobie. But made with wayyyyy more expensive/highspeed material. I’ve been wearing the same old 100$ jacket for about 18 yrs before this one. I had zero intention of spending 3 times that amount on a new one. But I couldn’t stop thinking about how comfortable this dang thing was, so here we are. I wear it around the house. That’s how comfy it is.

Subject to Confiscation

This jacket is so comfortable and stylish, it is subject to be confiscated by your girlfriend. Yup, after about a week, I lost possession of the jacket. Beyond her looking absolutely gorgeous wearing my jacket, she describes it as versatile. Easy to toss on over t-shirt and jeans, or pairs well with a tank top and button-up shirt. Its form fitting nature enhances her figure, so no I am not taking it back. She runs cold so its 800 fill power keeps her warm on the coldest of mornings. She wears it almost daily and it makes me smile that she has it.

Form, Fit, Function, and Style

I purchased the Spyfire Down Hoodie three weeks ago. Having relocated from warmer climes to the East Coast, I needed a new down jacket/coat. It is undoubtedly the best winter coat I’ve owned with respect to form, fit, function, and style. Given the price ($289), I went to the store twice to try it on and I read reviews on Kuhl and REI. I am 5’6”, 130 pounds and often struggle with sizing. Based on the KUHL sizing chart (which is slightly different from many other companies), I could wear an XS, which they don’t make in the Spyfire. However, the “S” (my normal size) fit very well while allowing for plenty of layering. It’s a fairly athletic cut so others may want to size up. We’ve had two cold snaps in the upper 20s with wind. I’ve worn it with just a t-shirt while walking in the neighborhood and it kept me snug with the ribbed hood up. I haven’t used it for extended periods in cold temperatures, but I can fit a t-shirt, long-sleeve t-shirt, hoodie/thin fleece, and my REI Flash Insulated Hybrid Hoodie underneath. Like other reviewers, I did notice a number of stray strings on the seams and some “bleeding” of feathers the first couple of weeks. I had the jacket in my cart waiting to use my 20% REI coupon on the first day of the sale, but REI marked it down 30% -- $289 to $202, which made the value/cost well worth it. Overall, a great product, with a number of great features, such as more than ample pockets (the sleeve pocket is my favorite), the ribbed hood (!), and a unique design and style.

Great mid-weight jacket.

I seldom write reviews, but I really really like this jacket. I had an ultra-light jacket from another brand, and the zipper broke. I debated getting another one from them at about a third the price of the KUHL Spyfire Hoodie....and I am happy that I didn't. The KUHL hoodie is very well made (stitching, zipper, etc.), has enough pockets, and draw-strings to tighten up when it is cold and you don't want drafts. I'm 6'1 195lbs with an athletic build and the XL fits well with a sweater underneath it. It kept me warm on an outdoor walk at 25 degrees (with a sweater, gloves and hat).

Just Enough

I bought this jacket mainly for backpacking and when it arrived today I had perfect conditions for a test. It was 38 degrees out with 12-15 mph winds. I went for a 2 mile walk wearing hiking pants, a long-sleeve tech-tee and this jacket. It was just enough to keep me warm - better than expected after seeing the jacket. For an 800 fill power jacket, I expected something more substantial, but it is exactly what I needed - a very light jacket that won’t take up much room and keep me warm in expected conditions.

Perfect Trim Fit

I’m 5 ft 10 in, 150 lbs, and the small is a perfect fit. It’s hard to find jackets that aren’t shaped like a bell for the average American physique. It’s relatively warm and waterproof, perfect for Portland winters. The only complaint I can think of is that while I love the close-fit hood, the material makes noise with every movement of my head. My solution is just to wear a hoodie underneath which I pretty much always have on anyway.

Wish I could do 4.5 stars

I first want to say I love this jacket, I wear it all the time and will for years to come, I will buy it again and again. I like the slim cut of the jacket, its athletic, it's not too bulky like other comparable competitors. Has a ton of pockets. The armpits are breathable. Like the down fill. The only down side I can think of is I wish the hood was detachable so I could wear it snowboarding under my ski jacket.

Nice fitting jacket and warm.

I bought the new version with the insulated hand pockets. The previous version the hands were on top of the down. Hands down, this was the best fitting down jacket I have tried on. While it fits well, I think the design allows for layers under it without looking too stuffed. The different baffles on different section really help it fit better. I am using it on a winter trip to Japan in 40 degree weather. The 20D fabric is very wind resistant. It if not too tight on the hips. I really like the two big chest pockets big enough for a cell phone and big wallet. The hood is also the best fitting hood I have tried. There is a soft brim so that you can get away without having to wear a hat. The chin area is also not restrictive. The sleeves are well cut so that if the sleeves are too long, it does not bunch up at the elbows. The elastic cuff material pills and frays. The 20D fabric seems to be sturdy. The fit and finish of the stitching is only average, below what you expect at this price point. There are a lot of threads sticking out, and the stitching does not look that precise. It does not leak bug feathers, but lost of little pieces.
