Coffee lock

I've had this for a couple years and now I'm replacing it for an Abus Bordo Lite 6055. The reason for the change is simply because the numbers have worn away to the point where I can't tell what number is on the dial. It's served well for picking up a quick coffee or anything that takes 10 minutes or less. Also used it to lock my motorcycle helmet to my motorcycle but now the numbers are nearly unrecognizable for any use.

Worse than worthless

I thought it was a fluke the first time it happened, but after the second time the lock combination seemed to change on its own, I checked the reviews to see that it's not just us having this problem. This lock is junk, and will cause you hardship when you can't get to open and you have to find someone to help you cut it off.

It's not because it's flimsy...

Looking at this lock, it's obvious it's only meant to delay a thief. It's so svelte and light, finding the lock that's keeping the bike tethered will take a bit longer than cutting it. What isn't obvious is that after a few times using this lock, you're going to *need a thief* to get your bike back. That's because the locking mechanism will one day fail to respond to any combination, even your own. So that's the risk you take with this lock -- not that you'll lose your bike to a thief but that you won't be able to unlock it. It took mine 3 days of use to lock up, and it took a kind gentleman working at restaurant (!) less than 3 seconds to cut it.

This is light duty lock, but it has issues

I bought this as a light weight, low security lock to be used in a relatively secure environment to prevent someone from just walking away with my bike. Even with the bar set that low its still questionable. Its very easy to guess the combination based on dial feel as another user stated. I used it under a half dozen times and the nylon overmold cracked where it bends the most (bottom of the image) -- its still functional, but disappointing that it cosmetically broke after so little use. I'll still keep using it until I find something better, but I won't recommend until they resolve these issues.

Broke second time using it

Though the strap is metal, the teeth on the strap are still plastic and have sheered off. The sheered off teeth then jammed the lock, preventing me from taking it off.

Nice idea but poorly designed and constructed

I wanted a lightweight lock just to secure one of my bikes when I run into a store or something, but this lock has a number of failings. The numbers are nearly impossible to read, especially if you're looking at them upside down. The paint on the numbers is already failing after only a month or so of being locked on the bike and used maybe 5 times. And worst of all, it's far too easy to accidentally change the combination. I did this without knowing and had to guess at the new combination.

Awful product getting my scooter stuck

Awful experience with this product. Similar to most of these cheap combination locks manufactured in China, it does last even 2 weeks. I had used it to lock my scooter barely 3 times, in shaded areas without any temperature extremes or physical abuse. Yet, I returned only to find the combination lock stuck, with no way to unlock no matter what I tried. Ultimately, had to search and borrowed a heavy duty cutter a mile away, & destroyed this flimsy product, in order to get my scooter unhooked. My advice: DON'T buy it if you don't want to get stuck like me. I don't think they even offer a warranty or replacement, but honestly I wouldn't take it unless a full refund is given. It's not worth being stuck a second time.

Warning: Manufacturer issue, combo not secure

I wrote the following to the manufacturer: "I purchased a Hiplok Z Lok Combo from REI. I love the design. However, the top 2 dials slow/stop at the correct combination number. This makes it very easy to figure out the combination. Do we have a defective unit, or is this common to all Z Lok Combos?" They wrote back: "Our Z LOK COMBOs do occasionally do this, however this can be common with combination locks design in this way but this does become less issue after time."

Great idea not ready for prime time

This lock could have been the ideal solution for a quick lock while popping into the store. It's not there yet. Two improvements would be a longer strap, perhaps 24", as 16" is just too short for most situations. Also, the numbers are too small for my eyes to read clearly. But the deal killer, and the reason for my low rating, was the auto-reset behavior of the lock. Coming back from the store, I found that the lock had automatically reset its combination from my custom number. My personal combination no longer worked! Imagine my frustration when I couldn't access my own bike 50 miles from home! After a few minutes of playing with the dials, I figured out the new combination and was able to retrieve my reliable steed, thanks to the sloppy feel of the lock's detent. A bullet proof locking mechanism and other improvements would make this a 5-star winner. But not now.

Versatile little lock

This is a great little do-it-all kind of lock. It is very portable and can easily be stowed in any kind of bag you have on you. Works great for locking up a bike for a short amount of time, locking up a bag in the library/airport and provides a little bit of piece of mind where ever you need it. I really like the combo because I don't have to worry about keeping the key on me. I mostly use mine in the library when I leave for a few minutes and don't want to take all of my stuff with me. I would love to see a longer version of the lock some day as there are times when the length is a bit prohibitive. This doesn't ruin the lock for me though, its just something to plan around. Well made product and definitely worth the price.
