Why We Like The Eureka! Mountain Pass Tent

Whether we're enduring harsh weather during a winter camping trip or we're determined to ride bikes in the desert all winter long, the Eureka 3 Person 4 Season Mountain Pass Tent helps us sleep like a baby to be up and at 'em bright and early.

The 3-person capacity is perfect for two adventurers with a mountainous pile of gear or three minimalists who have no problem getting cozy. The gear loft and pockets stash a lantern, extra hat, ear plugs, or whatever else we may need while we're burrowing into our mini mountain home for the night. Two doors let all occupants slide out for a midnight pee without hopping over one another, and the durable polyester material can withstand wear and tear from years of adventures in the mountains.

Tore first use

Seemed pretty small for a 3 person tent and it was just for me but i wanted more space (I'm 170lbs and 5'8. Also tore on the bottom with the first use AND I had a tarp under.

Great Tent!

We used this tent for the first time, during a recent 11 day canoe trip in Northwest Ontario Canada. The topography was very rugged. Temperatures were all over the place. Daytime highs sometimes exceeded 35 degrees C (95F) and lows, sometimes were close to freezing. Wind and rain as well. The tent performed well! We loved the colour of the tent … it is bright and cheery inside and out. Easy set-up and the centre hub system works great! No more loose poles lying on the ground. The flexibility of being able to have the large, interior side panels open during warm nights but closed during the colder nights was a real plus! These little irritants are the only reason I did not give it a 5 star rating. Although the small corner pockets are great for storing headlamps, glasses etc., we missed the two long mesh pockets that ran along the full side of our previous tent. These worked great for storing things like our sleeping bag compression sacks. We are not fans of overhead nets. Two-way zippers on the doors and vestibules would be very helpful. I also missed having a “grab strap” on the bottom of the tent bag itself. It really helps when removing the tent from the bag.

Great space and details

I bought this tent because I have my other two Eureka tents to my daughters for their camping adventures. This one has great room for people and stuff. Pretty easy to set up and take down. Love the pockets and suspended gear hammock. Could use a little more detail in matching the fly in the directions.

Fantastic tent for car-camping

This is a great tent! I run multi-week geology field trips for college students, sleeping mostly in national forest campgrounds, and this tent holds up really well to the students. While it's not a really light tent, it's exceptionally sturdy and zippers are good. The rain fly covers the tend fully, with 2 vestibules. The tent is stable in the wind and its occupants will stay dry. We like these tents for groups, since Eureka! produces for quite a few years, ensuring that we can replace tents and parts as necessary. Old tents are saved for spare parts.

Great Quality

So far I love what I see. It was easy to set up and ventilation was great. I’ve thought Eureka makes a very good tent. I’ve used and owned Timberlines and decided to get something different.

Almost perfect...

I spent a good amount of time looking for a tent suitable for warm, and potentially windy, desert conditions like we have here in the Arabian Gulf. I was looking for something with A) great ventilation for the heat, B) premium materials and poles to cope with potentially high winds, and C) inner tent mesh windows that could be closed off to keep out blowing dust and sand during these high winds. It was actually much more difficult than I expected to find a tent with these characteristics, there doesn’t seem to be anything on the market designed specifically for desert camping. Sure, 3-season tents with full mesh inners like the Eureka Summer Pass have great ventilation. However, when the winds pick up and the sand starts blowing an outer rain fly isn’t going to do much to prevent sand ingress. All the sand and dust will just get blown in around the bottom. That’s why I’m reasonably happy I found the Mountain Pass 3... I’m very impressed with the quality of materials and construction, especially at this price point. After sleeping in it on a gusty beach in Oman for a week I’m confident that it’s going to be able to cope with as much wind as it’s likely to see here. Being able to zip up and close off the inner mesh windows from the inside is great, that’s going to be key in a sand storm. What’s stopping this specific model from being the ideal warm weather desert tent? Well, ventilation firstly. As a 4-season tent it naturally does not have the same amount of ventilation as a pure summer tent. Second, this tent is BRIGHT, even with the rain fly on. This means that if you want to sleep in past sunrise then bring an eye mask otherwise you’ll wake up at dawn like I did. It also means that as soon as the sun’s out in the morning the tent starts getting hot because it acts like a greenhouse. Light passes through the tent fabric, thereby heating up the interior. For me the ideal warm weather desert tent would have a well ventilated inner tent with mesh doors and windows as large as possible that could also be closed off if needed, like on the Mountain Pass. The inner tent and mesh would also be dyed a dark colour to reduce the morning brightness as much as possible. The rain fly would have a bright exterior colour to reflect as much sunlight as possible, but it would also be designed to minimise light transmission and maximise shade. This would give me an extra hour two of sleep and it would also reduce the greenhouse effect. All 4 sides would be able to be opened to further increase ventilation. So, Eureka, if you’re reading this then maybe these are some ideas for a future Desert Pass tent. I’d be your first customer but until then I’ll continue to enjoy my new Mountain Pass tent, at least until the sun rises.

Heavy wind and rain

Continuous 15 to 25 wind, gusts to 45 mph. 24 plus hours of medium to heavy rain at Rockhound State Park in New Mexico. Tent structure still holding. Observations, no pole or fabric failure. Minor leakage around fly vents and tub corners. This tents bend but not break design works, but will drive you nuts, from the flapping of the inside material. Would i recommend it, sure, but for these conditions, probably not. Let's see how it holds up with another month of southern New Mexico weather. 4 thumbs up, so far
