Pros
A GREAT Value! This air gun has a nice wood stock, is easy to break/load, has dependable accuracy, all you need is an upgraded scope of your choice and you have a hunting machine.

Cons
They could bump up the scope quality, or just sell it without one.

For the money, this is very good value. You can't go wrong with the build quality and overall feel. If you're not a serious competition shooter and want something for keeping the squirrel population in check you won't be disappointed.

Pros
Solid wood stock. I was surprised by the weight, it's heavier than my Winchester model 94 3030. The scope mount is well made and easy to mount. Dialing the scope in only took about 15 shots and it has power. My target was mounted on a 3/4" piece of OSB and the pellets blasted through and into the tree behind. The cocking mechanism is stiff, but feels very well constructed, I don't have any problem cocking it after I realized you have to break the breach open with a swift tap on the barrel first. It's very comfortable to shoot and I didn't have any issues lining up the scope to properly fit my preferred eye distance. I didn't try using iron sights, but the fiber optic sight would be a benefit if I did. Overall, very pleased with the construction and the feel.

Cons
Ugh. The trigger. I know there are mods that can be done to change it and that this is an entry-level gun, but it pulls so hard and has so much travel that it can be difficult to shoot accurately. With practice I'm sure it will be more intuitive, but that is something to keep in mind when sighting the rifle in and shooting. Once you get used to it, this air rifle will make groupings you can cover with a dime at 30 paces, but the hard trigger pull is something that does influence accuracy.

Pros
Great for plinking and small game. Very accurate and reliable, I bought this gun 3 months ago and it’s still as it was when I purchased it.

I bought the Crosman Optimus .22 cal after reading many favorable reviews and bought it from Air Gun Depot after seeing many positive reviews. The rifle has a great look with the wood stock and all the parts were fit and finished very well. I mounted the scope that came with it after running around 100 pellets through it using iron sights. After mounting the scope and working with it and running around another 100 pellets through it the pellets were all over the target. I tightened the scope up and in just a short time I was putting all shots in the bulls eye, I was able to take the tops off of water bottles at 20 and 25 yard with the first try. I'm waiting on a scope upgrade and will use lock tight on the screws as suggested in a lot of post. After running around 250 pellets through it as suggested by the manufacture and making sure the scope isn't moving around it became a tack driver. Very pleased with this rifle and the service from Air Gun Depot, this won't be my last purchase. I would suggest this rifle and Air Gun Depot to family and friends.

Pros
Great wood stock Fiber optic front and rear sights Very accurate Hard hitting

Cons
Long trigger put but can be easily fixed with a RC bearing and U tube. Scope isn't bad but for me anything beyond 25 yard I prefer more magnification.

After months of use I have to say that the rifle has a good weight. It is a hard kiking rifle. Do to the hard kick i have gone thru 2 scopes. I just installed a Hawke HD 4x32 to it. I hope it holds on to the powerfull kick. The kick makes the rifle a challenge to be accurate. By accurate I mean to hit the bulls eye on targets at 75 feet away. I am hitting the bulls eye at that distance. The rifle is set within 1" kill zone. The max. range to shoot pray would be around 105 feet. Zero it at 25yrds. This rifle kills pigeons and chicken with authority. Rifle is well made. It is easy to dissasemble and clean. The trigger can be improved to be lighter in the pull. There is a fix on you tube. Adding a heavy muzzle to it would help accuracy and muzzle lift when you fire. Archer Airgun sells one for 15mm barrel diam. I recommend this rifle to anyone.

Pros
Price. Good construction. Knock down power. Easy to dissasemble.

Cons
You have to work on accuracy because of the hard kick. Needs a better scope to handle kick. Trigger a little on the hard side. Shoots 800fps. or less with lead pellets. Max. range is around 105 ft. At this distance pellet has dropped around 3/4". The rifle is not a long range shooter.

I bought this on a whim as it was only $89.95 and I was intrigued by the 1200 fps/alloy and 1000 fps/lead pellets! Figured if it didn't live up to claims, I would return it! WOW! Did this gun live up to claims! It averages 1225 fps with alloy and 1015 fps with 7.0 gr lead pellets and is dead nuts accurate! It is also fairly quiet, and very mild firing behavior! The recoil is just a gentle nudge straight back with no twisting or bucking! This is by far the BEST .177 I have ever fired, and I have tested dozens! This is a real winner! Buy it!

Pros
Accurate, fairly light weight, mild recoil and blazing fast! What more could you want?

Cons
The included scope is only fair, but I just put a better variable on it right out of the box! You should too! For the price, I did not expect the scope to be excellent! And it is not!

Kills rabbits and squirrels. Bought this to eliminate pests. Out of the box, mounted and zeroed the scope. Fired 10.5 gr pellets to keep the speed under supersonic. In 1 hour I killed 4 fox squirrels and 1 rabbit. The rabbit was 20 feet, 1 shot kill. One squirrel was 90 feet, 1 shot kill. 1 other squirrel was a 30 foot 1 shot kill. Two squirrels at about 40-50 feet took multiple hits to kill. It seems to have a break in period and gets more accurate as you shoot around 50 shots. Very happy with the power and accuracy.

Pros
Kills rabbits and squirrels no problem.

Cons
Heavy and large.

How many pellets can you load at one time. I'm new to all this do you need the CO2 air cartridge?

asked Harry P from USA

What weight pellet would you recommend for 177 caliber, for just target shooting? Also does this shoot regular bb's? Thanks

asked Philip from USA

No BB's, pellets only. I like the H&N Baracuda Power .177 Cal, 10.65 gr pellets. I've killed plenty of varmints with it, although I'm not a fan of the scope. It only stays sighted in for about 10 shots.

Ben from USA

I just bought this from another individual and I am having trouble getting it to cock. Any ideas or hits

asked larry wiebel

Hit the barrel sharply to break the breach. Brace it on your left thigh, grip with your left hand under the pivot and smack the barrel with your right hand to break the breach.

How many foot pounds of energy does the crosman optimus .22 cal have?

asked wendi

It varies with the individual gun, but 16ftlbs is probably typical. They can vary +- 2 to 3ftlbs from that. If you're willing to tune it you can pretty much guarantee the higher end of the spectrum and get 18-19.

Can you use the iron sights without removing the scope?

asked JBRADLEY from USA

No you cannot. The scope rings aren't see thru so using open sights with scope mounted isn't possible.

Eric

what .22 cal air rifle can take down a Axis Deer?

asked GBratland

I would say none, especially not this gun. Typically rabbits are the largest thing you should shoot. If you really want to shoot those deer with an airgun then I'd look at the big bore pcp guns, like a 45cal 909, but even then it's underpowered imo.

ROBERT from USA

Trying to sight my scope in at about 20 ft. and on the scope I have ran out of the up on the scope. I have switched the mounts around to see if that would work and it didn't. I am using the Crossman flat pellets. I am not sure if it matters or there is a break in period but it is about 15 (degrees) outside. Any advice would be great thanks

asked Jeremy Spindler

You need to shim the scope, google should have explanations

ROBERT from USA

Which one is the better quality gun? The Crosman Optimus .177 or the Crosman Vantage .177 (Spring Piston). I would also be using the gun for plinking, and small game hunting.

asked Avery

They are the same gun except for the stock. Seems the Vantage is the better price so that's what I'd get, also the Vantage can be had in nitro if you want.

ROBERT from USA

Crosman Phantom or Crosman Optimus ?

asked john

They are very close to the same thing, so just choose the one you like the most.Phantom can be a little tougher than the wood on the Optimus.I have had both But I like the look of the Optimus. So I kept the Optimus.

Scott from USA

Is this air rifle powerful enough for small game? And how long will stay accurate without adjusting the sights?

asked Michael Saunders

Yes, it's powerful enough for rabbits and crows or smaller. It can take out larger like coons but head shots only to be humane. It should stay accurate until you do something like remove it/reinstall the scope, or there's a problem of some sort. For example, sometimes the scopes break which can happen on any spring airgun, but odds are good that it'll last for life. This is an excellent gun for the money, you won't find better if that's what you're wondering.

ROBERT from USA

Around how far can it shoot?

asked Emma

What are the best pellets to use for this gun? I heard Crosman SSP's are really inaccurate with it.

asked Nick

To be honest, each rifle will like its own pellet. So try different pellets.Top starters are JSB Exacts, Crosman premiers,There is are some Sampler Packs with several different pellets. That may be a good start. Now for mine it did not like crosman pellets( 3" groups), but at 22 yards I could put ten in the space of a dime with JSB exacts. 3or 4 inch groups are not what you want. Do not forget to clean the barrel at first, makes a big difference. Best of luck

Al

All alloy pellets are inaccurate in most pellet guns! Mine loves chp's, and all 7.0 gr match pellets plus most round nosed.

David

Most alloy pellets are inaccurate in most air guns! My Optimus likes 7.0 grain match lead pellets best, but shoots well with 7.9 gr chp also!

David

Crosman pointed pellets are the best. I get really accurate shots with this.

Andrew

How quiet is this rifle? I live in Texas so shooting squirrels in your backyard isn't a big deal but a loud bang that sounds like a normal .22 might be beyond the pale in my subdivision. I know it will be softer than a normal .22 but looking for objective feedback before I invest.

asked CapCityRaider

These type guns are much quieter than a .22 rimfire, but you might also consider Aguila Colibri ammo for your .22, they're even quieter than this airgun. It helps to shoot them out of a longer 22" barrel, they're much louder with shorter barrels like 18". I use them when I don't want to bother my neighbors, like shooting rats at 2am. Other options are quieting this Crosman down further: You can use spring tar (~$10) and buy a suppressor barrel (~$25) to make it about as quiet as a break barrel gun can be.

ROBERT from USA

I would select Powerplant: Spring Piston. That sure I select Crosman Optimus .22 Caliber Air Rifle w/Scope 900 FPS because It's pretty good and worth my money.

Monhkol S.

How do you cock it?

asked charles

Cocking these break barrel are simple. the front half of the barrel swivels down, and the force of you pulling down the barrel cocks back the spring.you then swing the barrel back up into place and you're ready to shoot.

Steve from USA

What powers this gun and is this a good scope

Jack, This rifle has a break barrel cocking mechanism. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Sincerely, Airgun Depot Customer Care

How good is this rifle?

asked Marcos from USA

This is an excellent gun! Does advertised velocities at 1200+ fps with alloys and 1000+ fps with light lead. It is also very accurate! Paid only $89.95 for mine on sale, so search the ads!

David

It is great for pest control, target shooting, plinking, etc. Plenty of power and fun gun!

Conor from USA

how far can i shoot with it? and for what distance it;s best? and is it actually shooting with 1200 fps? and if yes with 20 or 12g?

asked Arnii

This gun actually fires .177 caliber Lead Pellets. It will shoot at 1200. It's accurate distance is around 25 yards if sighted in properly. Max range can easily be 100 yards but not accurately.

Scott from USA

Is the stock on this rifle fitted for kids or adults? The Quest model was fitted for adults, but many models have shorts stocks better suited for younger folks.

asked Clark from USA

The optimus is a full size 43 inch gun. It is fitted mainly for adults.

Scott from USA

What are the best kind of pellets for this rifle?

asked David Duncan

H&N/aka Beeman are excellent brands, as are RWS and JSB. JSB is probably the best for the money. You should buy several different weights and types to see what you and your gun like the most. Also read the reviews of the pellets to see what people are saying. Something like the H&N Barracuda Match are excellent for accuracy and retain energy power for longer down range shooting, but they have less power initially because of their weight and have more pellet drop due to being slower. I'd certainly try the JSB in 15.9 and 18.3gr, they seem to be the most popular for most people/guns. The 13 and 14gr are also nice, especially at closer ranges (all round nose btw). RWS Super Domes are nice too. The only hollow points I like are the Crow Magnum, they actually work like their supposed to.

ROBERT from USA

The best ammo? Only you can answer "What is the best ammo". I've had good patterns with pellets with taper points and with rounded points. Try some of the Crossman taper-type ammo and compare it to the Benjamin round-point ammo and see what you think. I use both and like both types equally well.

Clark from USA

Can this gun take out groundhogs?

asked Donald from USA

Yes, it has the power as long as you place the pellet. Head or heart shots are needed because a body shot will not kill right away. Power drops fast with range too, so it's basically cruel to shoot them at a distance. You can either use a Crony or ballistic calculator to determine the power remaining at any distances. It won't shoot normal lead pellets at 900fps like they claim, more like 650 to 750 so keep that in mind. I'd say stick to under 200', not only for power, but accuracy. No point in a gut shot or taking a jaw or leg off the poor feller letting him die in agony over a period of a few days. I don't mind killing, but I don't want anything to suffer. You should be able to find ballistic calculators online, if not write me at chevota at hotmail and I'll send you some.

ROBERT from USA

I might purchase this gun just so that i have another .177 caliber air rifle [have many .22s] I would just like to know if this gun can take down squirrels, rabbits, Birds, Raccoon, Possum, and possibly larger game. I currently have about 15 pellet rifles all over .177 caliber except one .177 so i basicly use large pellet guns and was wondering if this gun is worth the money and will it kill any of the above animals

asked andrew from USA

Yes, the .177 is really accurate with Polymags, Barracuda's, and is nice for shooting birds at 50yds.

Conor

Yes, this Optimus .177 rifle can take down small game such as squirrels, rabbits, birds, raccoon, and possum. However, hunting small game is mainly dependent on shot placement. Head shots are best next to heart/lung shots. Since the .177 will shoot ~200fps faster than an equivalent .22, which means a flatter shot, it might do better on the possum as it can get better penetration on vital shots. The trigger on the Optimus .177 is very heavy, but you can get used to it to get accurate shots. If you are a Euro airgun fan with feather lite triggers, this air rifle will not fit your liking. For the money, the Optimus .177 w/ scope is one of the best value airgun in the market.

John Kenneth from USA

Hey Andrew, this is Eid. You have a great question because I love answering yes to it. I have bought this rifle from airgun depot and it is very powerful and dead on accurate. I have been adjusting the scope on a 2x4 piece of wood and the pellet maks it's way about half way in. I have not tested the rifle on small game such as squirrels yet but from what i have seen on videos, the crosman quest can do the job and that rifle is a bit weaker than the optimus. I recommend the Optimus to you because it's great. It is also a new 2011 rifle.

Eid from USA

I havn't hunted with it but idid shoot it into a 3 inch phone book and it went about 1 and a quater into it and set up 3 cans and a plastic bottle and went through all of themif that helps any.
