Smart-looking, functional panniers
My red panniers held up beautifully on two unsupported week-long bicycle trips on the Erie Canal Trail and Great Alleghany Passage. They were incredibly easy to pop on and off my bicycle using the handle latches. I had a short window, just a few minutes sometimes, to put them on and take them off the bike rack while on the Amtrak train platform or even inside a crowded traincar at rush hour. The easy latch makes a huge difference. Easy to carry the panniers on the train and put them in the overhead storage like a carryon bag. Very roomy and sturdy. I fit a whole weeks worth of clothes, toiletries, and electronics in there with room to spare. The inside pocket is super handy to slip in maps and guides. It took a couple of YouTube videos to figure out how to put them on my bike the first time. Depending on your rack style you have to put a piece of plastic in to grip the rack. You also have to play around with the clips figure out the best placement for your bike. If you haven’t done it before it takes some time to figure out and that probably applies to any panniers you buy. Once you figure it out, it’s easy but give yourself time to establish it the first time. Also, the shoulder straps are theoretically a good idea and I used them the first few times. But when you use the shoulder strap, it pulls on the rings and causes the bag to lose its nice rolled up shape and crumples the sides a bit. It also takes a minute to put the shoulder strap back in it’s little clip when you put it back on your rack. Overall, I love these panniers so much. Whenever I see someone with Ortliebs on their bicycle I feel like I’m in a special club. When I see someone else’s bike with rear red Ortliebs, I’m always like, wow, that’s some good looking gear! I researched these a ton and based on reviews decided to fork over the $$ to get these beautiful, reliable panniers. Best decision ever!
Perfect in every country, every weather
We have used these magnificent Ortlieb panniers, both front and rear, in pretty much every country in Europe and every weather. They have proven to be a lifetime purchase after long treks over fifteen years.
Little Red Riding
I bought these in red and have used them for bike camping in Vermont, commuting around the Denver trails and the many bike trails across the country. They fit well on my Topeke rack, are sturdy, waterproof, and large enough for all of my gear. I like the reflective triangles as they provide more visibility of me on my bike to the vehicles on the road. They have actually protected my bike and me rom from damage on a major wipeout. I have had and have used them regularly for years-though they did not match my first bike which was black-my new bike"Red" is the perfect match. I got Ortleibs on sale which was even better. Happy trails!
Easy to use attachment system, annoying to carry
The way that the attachment system works is very innovative. You pick it up by the handle and the mechanism opens up. Gravity keeps it in place. That is probably my favorite aspect of this pannier. I don't live in a rainy area, but it seems incredibly water proof, so if it rains a lot that could be useful. They also have a ton of space, I managed to fit my whole giant backpack in one of the bags. I tried to ride with just one bag with my backpack and my *gigantic* chain lock leaning on the same side, and the ride was smooth even uphill, if not easier because I wasn't wearing my backpack. I thought I might lean to one side, but not really unless I am literally stopped. The thing is, there are a couple of issues that I have, and it might cause me to return these because I have to carry stuff for long periods of time. The straps they give you, as well as the handle, are both very uncomfortable. The mechanisms are cool, as I said, but it is not very useful for carrying the whole bag due to lack of cushioning. The mechanisms also hit against my body when I'm trying to walk, and it is quite uncomfortable. I wish there was a flap to cover it up like some other panniers have. I keep getting jabbed by the pieces poking out. Flipping the bag so the bits face outwards helps, but it is not as stylish. I also cannot find a way to connect the bags together or anything like that, which would be helpful (though it may already be a thing, I just could not find anything on it). I mean, you could connect the straps that come with it, but it isn't really able to be carried that way. It's like two purses loosely strapped together, not ideal. Overall, they panniers are amazing in everything, I just wish they were a tad more aesthetically pleasing and were more comfortable to carry around. For me, the uncomfortable carrying is a dealbreaker since I need to take this around for my college classes.
In Love
My boyfriend and I each used a pair of back-rollers (and front-rollers) on a 93 day, 5678 mile cross country bike ride last summer (LA to Salem, MA by way of Portland, OR). I cannot say enough how much I loved these panniers. Waterproof: They kept our stuff safe and dry through soaking drizzle in Northern California and hail/thunder/downpours in Wyoming. When our bags were left out over night things stayed secure and dry even in the dew and summer rain storms. Fit: They fit well with our standard issue racks. The front panniers didn't fit as well with our Tubus Tara Lowriders but they never fell off, just bounced around a little (the Tara has one tube that is about double the diameter of normal bike rack tubes). They were incredibly easy to take on and off the bikes and made loading/unloading totally hassle free. Durability: Before we started the trip my boyfriend damaged a clip on one of his front panniers (he didn't have enough clearance when riding by a post and caught his bag on it, causing the bag to be ripped off the rack). Happily REI replaced the bag. On the trip itself they survived a couple of minor spills and one major accident. So in my mind they are pretty durable. Overall, I would absolutely recommend these to anyone.
Don’t settle for second best
Don’t hesitate to buy these By far the best purchase for my new bike Adjustable for a perfect fit and just the right size to hold everything you need including a zipper pocket inside. They have a strap and handle for carrying. Easy to install and remove. Waterproof, with different colors to choose from. Ortlieb makes sure you can fit these on any size rear rack with the included adapters. Only drawback is they will not stand up on their own
Four years (and counting) of reliable commuting
Ortliebs are top-notch products. I bought mine years ago as a new bike commuter after quickly realizing that I wouldn't be able to hack it just wearing a backpack. These were game changing for me - it changed the weight distribution to feel more comfortable than a backpack (in my opinion) and it frees up my body from having excess weight strapped to me through a backpack. When properly closed, these have been entirely waterproof for me as a four-season commuter. The mounting system is a bit finicky, but once you set it up and dialed in, you should rarely need to change it (unless you get a new rear rack). Worth noting is that they are essentially giant bags, so there's not really much in the way of internal organization. In terms of amount, I've never felt short on space with them. Using my pair, I'm able to carry breakfast and lunch, my bike tools, packable rain pants, my work laptop, and a change of clothes. I spread the weight across both sides and still have half (or more) of the storage space available, in case I need to carry something extra besides my usual workplace commute items. These are durable, too. I've taken a downhill fall once around 12 mph and one of the Ortliebs took the brunt of the fall for my bike. Other than some visible dirt afterwards, there was no damage to the Ortliebs. I definitely plan to get more Ortlieb products as I kit out my bike for touring.
Best in the market
These panniers work very well and are the right size for a multi day bike adventure. Highly recommend them and REI was the best price that I found!
Survived being hit by car
While riding recently, I was hit from the side by a car that ran a red light, on the right side, where one of these panniers was mounted. Upon impact, my pannier was ripped off my bike rack and went flying about 20 feet. Remarkably, the pannier is almost completely unscathed: no cuts or broken parts -- even the latch that holds it onto the rack seems perfectly fine, despite being violently ripped off the rack. The back panel was slightly bent, but I was able to bend it back easily. There are a few scuff marks on it, but I've had these for about 5 years and those scuffs could have already been there before the crash.
Life changing
I toured with a bike company in Holland and they used these. I was so impressed with how easy they are to get on and off the bike--and capacious and waterproof--that I bought some for my ebike as soon as I got home. Immediately went to the market and loaded up. These will solve the problem I had using my ebike (vs. the car and with gas prices nearing $6/gal) for errands. Absolutely GREAT. Plenty of room. Waterproof (Dutch tested!) Just buy them.
