L Ruffwear Dog Pad

This sleeping pad is pretty great! It's lightweight and packable. I took it with me on a recent backpacking trip to Mammoth with my dog. It fit in his L Ruffwear backpack. It was a very difficult backpacking trip (high altitude, rough terrane, lots of miles) and it got down to 20 degrees at night. My dog was exhausted and ended up curled on my sleeping pad so I took his (lol). He's an 80lb German Shepherd mix and it's just not enough padding for him after a long day. HOWEVER, we stopped at a few breweries on the way back and I brought this pad out for him to chill on while we had a beer and it was perfect. Will definitely be keeping it in my truck for day to day and will be getting him a new one for backpacking.

Not as good as expected from Ruffwear

Very little padding in this dog bed - I have used it on a concrete floor and on dirt. Not much comfort for the dog. And I discovered when I wanted to wash it and read the label (should have read more carefully when purchasing), it is supposed to be hand washed! Who actually wants to hand wash a dog bed? Not me.

Newt's happy, I'm happy

I bought this, along with the compatible sleeping bag in a size large for Newt. We used it this weekend and it was in the 30s and raining. He was cozy and warm all night long. My sister got a size medium for her dog. My only complaint is ruffwear advertises that this packs into the palisades pack. Technically they aren't wrong, I can force it into Newt's medium pack, if it's completely empty and it's still a challenge. A small detail, that seems insignificant but that I really love is there's a loop on the bottom of the pad for the strap that keeps the pad folded, the loop keeps the strap neatly under the pad while it's in use and keeps the velcro from getting stuck to everything. I think a stuff sack or compression sack would make this a lot easier to pack and help prevent wear and tear. Overall it does what it should, keeps my best friend comfy and warm, and it's easy enough to bring backpacking, I will just have to be more strategic in packing my bag and carry it.

Great quality, packs small

We bought this for our pup to use for our almost weekly camping trips. He's a 65lb 3y/o labradoodle and we went with the large bed for a little extra room. He took to lying on it immediately (a lot easier than the pop-up "hammock" style beds we've had for him in the past). What we love about it: It packs down so much smaller than other beds; it's water-resistant; it wipes down super easily; when embers inevitably burned through, there was no filling/stuffing loss. It was pricey for a small dog bed, but worth it.

My dog loves this pad

We've taken this camping a few times now and it's clear that my dog really appreciates this pad. He moves around a lot in general but I find him sitting on it a ton, even in nice weather, so I know it's the cushion and lack of sticks/rocks/etc poking into him. I can imagine he'd sit exclusively on this in freezing temps (he did curl up on it in chilly ~40ish F temps & I covered him with my jacket), or at times when the ground is hot. Solid purchase! Just wish Ruffwear made bigger sizes, as my dog (puppy) is currently 60ish lbs and enjoying the Large. He'll max out around 100 lbs and no doubt his legs will stick off the pad.

Not just for camping!

We’ve had this pad about 3 years now. It’s been great for backpacking and camping, but just as great when sitting outside at an outdoor restaurant. My dog knows he’s not to leave the pad; I put down a bowl of water on it and some snacks, and many waiters have told me how much they appreciate such a well-mannered dog. Water just beads right off the top and I love how compact it folds. My husband and dog and I take many cross-country road trips and always have this along. Some have complained it has to be hand washed, but I just lay it on the patio and take a garden hose to it; no big deal! A flying ember from the fire burned a small hole in it 2 years ago but it hasn’t frayed or affected the performance. Love this pad!

Good purchase

For the weight this is surprisingly good padding/insulation. I used it as a ground pad for myself while cooking/eating dinner at camp, and when I placed it in the tent my dog immediately curled up on it. A definite improvement from having to push her off *my* sleeping pad, and she can carry it in her Approach pack (not that it takes a little finagling to get it in there and it takes up almost the whole side.)

Love it!

This is perfect for travel and keeping my dog off the hard ground. I did not find this to be too thin as others had mentioned. This is not meant to be a fluffy bed, but rather a mat to offer some protection from the ground. It packs down very small and light and the fabric is quite soft on top. This is something meant for daytime use around the campsite or taking breaks on hikes. It is not meant for long-term sleeping. Keep that in mind and this will be a perfect addition for your dog. I’m really glad I purchased.

Wasted $$

It’s very thin, not machine washable, not cozy at all. It is very expensive and I feel kinda like it’s a waste of money cuz my dog is definitely not comfortable on it.

Works great with bed

Fits perfectly with the sleeping bag and is easy to get in and out, but doesn't slide around while the dog is in the bag. Offered him good cushioning with the bag and will work great without the bag too. Has little grippies on the bottom to keep from being a sled like his other camping beds! It folds down nicely for easy packing and carrying. I can't wait for more trips with my boy!
