Finally a boot made for wide feet!
HoneyB

Unboxed my new Quest 4s today and this is my initial review based entirely on sizing. I have not had a chance to trail test them yet. Background: I wear a size 8 tennis shoe, have somewhat wide feet (C) and am prone to ankle rolls (hence why I hike in full height boots). Prior to purchasing the Quest 4s I had been hiking in the Quest 3s for 3 years and been extremely happy with them. After the Sierras wore them down and Hawaii lava ate the treads requiring some glue repairs, and with a JMT hike planned for this summer I thought now would be a good time to start breaking in a new pair. I had previously purchased the Quest 3s after trying on in the store and found them to run a little too narrow and short for my feet, so I purchased a half size up (8.5) and ended up stretching the toe box to get a little extra wiggle room for my wide feet. Then they fit nearly perfectly and never gave me blisters. With COVID-19 still around, I ended up purchasing the Quest 4s online. I figured they would fit similar to the Quest 3s, so I ordered an 8.5 like before. It turns out that the fit is not at all similar to the previous model. The Quest 4s are way wider in the toe box and I doubt I will have to stretch them at all or spend as much time breaking them in. Yay! They are also longer - by a half an inch as measured with a ruler! (See sole picture - Quest 3 on the left and Quest 4 on the right.) This will be nice for the down hill as I always found the 8.5 in the Quest 3s a little too short and the 9 a bit too long. My only concern is that the Quest 4s might be a little too long now. The Quest 4s are a bit wider in the heel as well, which may be a problem for people with narrow heels. Otherwise, the Quest 4s are nearly identical to the Quest 3s. There have been slight modifications to the design...mostly in the construction and attachment of the uppers to the soles. (See side picture - again, Quest 3 on the left and Quest 4 on the right.) Only time will tell if this is an improvement over the Quest 3s design or not, but I have high hopes. (I personally didn't have tears in my 3s like others did, but I did have sole layer separation issues with my 3s mostly due to harsh lava terrain - resulting in the glued repairs you can see in the picture. And after 3 years of abuse, the leather is starting to crack and separate near the front toe rubber and sole attachments, but I never conditioned my boots like I should have.) One noticeable difference is on the tongue. With the Quest 3s the Salomon logo was on a fabric loop that was sewn at both ends...allowing one to lace through it or attach things to the boot. With the Quest 4s, this piece is completely sewn to the tongue and instead they added an extra large shoe string loop on the top of the tongue. (See picture - again, Quest 3 on the left and Quest 4 on the right.) This loop won't be as valuable for lacing through or holding the excess laces, but may make it easier to attach other gear to the shoe. (I personally don't think I'll use this feature, so the extra loop is going to be more of an annoyance to me and I might just cut it off.) Lastly, there is a slight difference in weight. I never weighed my old pair before use and now that they are so worn down it would not be a fair comparison. But the provided specs for the Quest 4s is that they weigh about 1 oz more than the Quest 3s...likely due to the extra rubber on the sole and nylon on the upper that creates the new "active support" (see side picture) as well as the larger extra loop on the tongue. While the active support feature may or may not increase comfort and stability...it would be nice if Salomon found a way to do it without increasing the weight of the boot. While it's still one of the lightest full height boots, it goes against the backpacking gear trend of trying to make improvements that also result in weight reductions. However, for the comfort and stability this boot provides, I'll gladly carry an extra oz or two. Overall, I think the sizing is fantastic for people with wide feet (when ordering a half size up like commonly recommended). For those without wide feet, I would recommend ordering true to size (definitely not a half size up). If you have narrow heels, I would pay special attention to your lacing, wear thicker socks, and try on in store of possible. I give 4 stars for now because of the inconsistency in sizing (even though it's an improvement) and because nothing deserves 5 stars until it has been trail tested. I look forward to testing these boots out on the trail soon and reporting back on whether or not they live up to the reputation of the Quest 3s and the Salomon quality in general.

Both men and women's leaked first hike toe joint..
ML Reviewer
There is nothing really positive to write about this boot if you intend to hike in any wet environment. Two copies failed waterproofing on first hike in same region of the boot. On our first hike out in snowfield, both mine and my wife's leaked in the same places and we had to contend with our cold wet feet for the rest of the time. There appears to be a design issue, where the Goretex and upper are strained at the toe joints and start to leak water in after working them in briefly. In the past years, we have tolerated Quest GTX limited endurance, knowing that the waterproofing will completely fail in about 1-2 months of hiking (that is about 2 trips), regardless of the Nikwax application, which is just an over-hyped short term bandaid for an actual membrane failure and water will pour in with continuously wet environments. Having two of two failure on first hike is really unacceptable. I'm not sure what special version website reviewers and bloggers receive where they wear these day in and day out for a season without any leaks or issues and report this as "best rated boot"...I would beware the hype. They have always been weak on membrane but now worse than before. Our experience was in line with other reviewers that had major water ingress issues, and it is time to move on to another brand/line...

Held up to Iceland.

These boots for exceeded my expectations. I got them for a trip to Iceland and they preformed to perfection. Crossing rocky Glacier rivers they kept my feet dry and comfortable wile providing great grip. Used them bouldering. The ankle support was second to none. I never got cold nor overheated. Perfect for long hikes and risky adventures. These boots got me through loose lava rock pathways up waterfall trails and never once failed to keep me comfortable and protected. Even kept me warm wile sitting over night on a hill watching an eruption. These are by far going to be my go to boots from now on. #Iceland #bouldering #GlacierHike #volcanoHike #RiverCrossing #SuperGrip #WaterProof #DryFeet #AnkleSupport #Adventure #MountainTrail #spelunking #Breathable

Hiking boots

I bought this these boots few months ago. I used four time First time I used in Portugal and the sole of the left boot came off at the back. Second I use in Tenerife when hiking up Teide. Rest of sole was broken ( see picture). That happened only one boot. Right boot is perfect. No damage. The boots are very comfortable for me. I am disappointed because my wife use similarly boots 14 years and nothing happened.

Almost perfect--- but not

I purchased these boots for my trip to Kilimanjaro. I trained with them for 2 months before the boot became unglued. I returned them to REI thinking I had a defective pair. I was then very close to my trip. I wore the new pair for two hikes before going to Tanzania. After 1 day there, the boots also became unglued. I had to return them again. Other than the ungluing, I loved the boot. It is a shame.

Glad I waited

I've had a pair of the Salomon Quest 4D GTX (probably actually an earlier version but that's the closest I can find) for over 7 years. I've been trying to replace them for the past year but that boot has been impossible to find in my size anywhere, trust me I've been looking! This Gortex version was available but I was hesitant. My old Quests finally failed me for the first time in 7 years, my feet got wet standing around a bonfire in wet grass for 5 hours. I went to REI to finally bite the bullet. I wanted to try these one to make sure they were my boots. They didn't have them in the store and I tried so hard to like another pair of comparable boot but they weren't MY boots. I went home and ordered them. They came this evening and I haven't taken them off to go to bed yet. I have no doubt they'll be waterproof as heck, they need to be broken in but they're MY Boots! Here's to another adventure filled 7 years or more! A note if you're looking at Solomon boots for the first time, I have a generally narrow, flat foot. I have these boots and a pair of Solomon snow boots that are amazing. I love them boot dearly and they've kept me comfy and sure-footed (and dry!) for years. P.S. Still can't get rid of the old ones though, we've been through some stuff. Stay tuned for a review of Shoe Goo!

Best rugged boot on the market!

The balance of stability, durability, lightweight, and comfort of this boot is the absolute best. This is my go-to for big rugged days or even when I need a full high waterproof boot on snowy trails. I even use them for hunting since often times bushwhacking in rough terrain comes into play. They provide incredible ankle support with a lacing system that is snug and doesn’t loosen as you hike. The sole is grippy, I get zero hotspots because the fit is dialed, and these things will last years. When I need my most ruggedly capable hiking shoes, the Quest is what I reach for! They’re the shoe ya wanna marry, ya know? Loyal, steadfast, full of adventure for the long haul. Love love love.

Favorite backpacking boots!

I have a lot to say about these as they have been my go to backpacking boots for years! My original pair was my absolute favorite and lasted many tough miles, I’m not sure the newer versions are quite as durable. However, even for the robust nature of these boots, they are lightweight and take minimal time to break in! Great for 10+ mile days and rocky terrain. Highly recommend!

Right boot squeaks

Bought the brown version of this in Dec. 2021, prod. 6/21. Fit is fantastic, I love them for my all-purpose use. I wear them all the time into town, at work (concrete), in the yard, on hikes, etc. Super comfortable, keeps my ankles stable and I never have sore feet or joints from standing or walking too much. They have been in the water some but I still try to stay out of it for the most part. The toe/ball of the sole on the right boot (right under the big toe knuckle joint) is coming apart and squeaks loudly every step I take. They don't feel wet but I tried drying it out with corn starch and seems to have worked for now but will have to stay away from water and see how long the quiet lasts. I thought it might be the tread on surfaces but it squeaks the same on carpet, grass, concrete, wood, etc. Left doesn't squeak at all but also isn't falling apart. My previous pair of Salomon boots had contagrip + gore tex + 4d chassis as well but were not the quest 4 style. I can't read the numbers on them anymore. They also fell apart in same area (both sides) but never squeaked. Weren't quite as comfortable as quest 4. I'll give these a second chance for the comfort. I wish the toe/ball area were more durable.

Absolute garbage

I’m sad to say I will no longer be recommending Salomon boots to my hiking friends… I’ve had a pair of Quests since 2017 that I absolutely adored, but the rubber finally peeled away enough from the uppers to let water in, so it was time to get a new pair. I immediately gravitated towards the same boot, and was shocked at the drop in quality of the materials. It felt flimsy. The sizing was also strange - I’m a size 9 in ALL of my boots, and had to drop to a size 8 for a marginally good fit. I took them for a local hike to check the fit over a small distance, and the boot had hot spots I never had with my old pair (oddly enough, one was across the top of my boot where it bent with each step and rubbed against my toes). The cherry on top came when I hopped down a rocky face and the metal hook eyelet popped right out. This was in no way, shape, or form an aggressive hike. It was basically a walk in the park, and the boots failed spectacularly. Between the bad fit and the boots quite literally falling apart, I returned them the same day and am looking at other brands to suit my needs. I’m disappointed they took an amazing boot that’s lasted me seven years through tough conditions (mud, streams, endless granite and boulders) and replaced it with this nonsense. Clearly churning out an inferior, cheaply made product to maximize profit is the name of their game now, so I’ll be taking my $200+ and buying something that’s actually worth the steep price tag.

Top 3 hiking boots I own!

I don't understand the low reviews... granted, I don't backpack, but I LOVE these boots for the following reasons: runs a bit wide which is perfect for my large feet and cankles; great thread and waterproof, I have been using them on snowy hikes and stay dry and warm; super comfortable and, because they are wide, I can wear thick socks and still the boots don't feel tight; I love the high boot because it helps my weak ankles stay stable. Soooo, all that to say that I highly recommend these boots!
