Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements.
SHORT: Some pants are available in short sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 2.5 inches shorter than regular sizes.
TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.
Buying Advice
How to Choose Rainwear
Waterproof vs. water-resistant
A waterproof jacket keeps out hard, driving rain
A water-resistant jacket can handle light rain for a brief time and is more breathable
Windproof vs. wind-resistant
Any waterproof jacket is also windproof to shield you in stormy weather
A wind-resistant jacket will offer much lighter protection
Hard shell vs. soft shell
Like a waterproof and windproof rain jacket, a hard shell will offer the most protection, but less breathability than a soft shell.
Do you need insulation? For very cold rainy weather, consider an insulated shell, which will have down or synthetic fill for warmth while being waterproof and windproof.
Proper care is key to performance
Every rain jacket or rain pant needs regular maintenance to keep on keeping you dry, so follow care instructions to keep yours lasting.
From feedback to field testing, all of our gear is dialed-in by REI Co-op members. Their adventures informed every stitch and detail—making for better, longer-lasting gear.

Stood the test off driving cold rain in Alaska

Used this shell recently in Alaska in driving rain and wind. The outer layer soaked but the inner layer was bone dry. Washed the shell before using with Nik. Great value for the price.

I received this poor jacket as a gift. Of course, it didn't rain a drop for days, so when it finally came time to test it out, I was stoked. Very strong downpour coming down, so I zip up and go stand outside with my arms outstretched. It didn't take long for me to start to feel temperature changing in a certain spot. The fabric is NOT beading, in fact, it is taking on water. It hadn't soaked through the inner lining when I called it quits to take pictures, review, and never purchase Co-Op branded goods again (honestly makes me question the Goretex brand). Please look at these pictures. After letting it dry, the water did manage to make it through the inner lining. All for 5 minutes of rain. This jacket isn't worth a dime.

Light, but still full of the important stuff
1 year ago
This is a great packable shell layer, which in my book, is an essentially essential piece. And it performs as billed. For something you want to throw in your pack regardless of weather, because you just never know, weight and packability is a big deal. It also hits on many of the details, too, like fully-taped seams, draw cords, and micro-fleece lining on the top of the zipper and neck. The mesh pocket linings are great too, allowing for some venting, since it saves weight by omitting pit zips. The hood is also large enough for a climbing helmet, too. And a GoreTex jacket as this price (not some wannabe GTX) is also a big bonus. The only thing I’d knock is that it fits slightly bigger than I’d expect in a normal medium—but that extra room allows for it to easily layer over whatever you might need. So it’s not a bad tradeoff.

Travel, Town, or Trail…
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.
This lightweight and simple jacket has you covered when you’re on the go.
Two zippered side pockets to keep your hand hand dry and keys and other items secure. A zippered chest pocket is ideal for a phone or pair of glssses. The hood is sized to be compatible with a helmet but also has sinch cords, 2 in the front and 1 in the back, to allow for personalized adjustments. The cuffs have easy hook and loop closures with a good amount of adjustability. There is also a sinch cord at the bottom edge which could be handy if you need to keep out wind or heavy rain.
The jacket is very lightweight making it easy to pack and stow when needed. The Goretex and DWR finish make it an excellent choice for the all around rain cover.
Sizing it pretty accurate for REI branded items. At 5’11” and 215lbs, the Men’s Large fits me perfect with enough room to slip a puffy or hoodie comfortably underneath when needing the extra warmth but also not too roomy to where it feels like a floppy tent when wearing just as a shell.
If there was any room for improvement I would say add pit zips, but otherwise this is a solid rain jacket. I highly recommend for the simplicity and functionality. It does the job it’s intended for without being overly techy making it the perfect all around and go to jacket.

Bombproof in the rain but a bit oversized
1 year ago
Overall a bombproof jacket that will keep you dry in the worst conditions. I went on a 12 mile hike in an absolute downpour and stayed very dry and comfortable the whole time. I don't love the hood and lack of ventilation, hence the 4 stars versus 5 but overall a great jacket for the rain!
Pros:
Excellent rain protection- wore these through a few complete downpours and had zero leakage!
Roomy- If you need a jacket with a little more room for some thick layering, you can add some bulky layers underneath without a problem
Breathable- breaths pretty well, did not build up a lot of heat or moisture on my rainy hikes and never felt too stuffy or constrained
Cons:
Too roomy!- for me , this jacket is just cut too big. Good for layering if you need that but otherwise, it's too oversized and wide cut
Hood doesn't stay on- the way the hood cinches, it doesn't stay on in very windy conditions (it is also oversized so that doesn't help). I would prefer a more secure hood cinch as I had to hold it on during windy conditions
Lacks Pit Zips- if you run warm, this will be a deal breaker. I don't run that warm so not as huge of a deal for me but having some kind of ventilation, either core or pits would be helpful

Supreme rain gear
I was going to a football game and the weather called for downpours all day. Went to REI to buy my first ever dedicated rain jacket. Salesman was great. Spent a lot of time going over the pros and cons of all the rain jackets and concluded that this one is the best for the least amount of money. It delivered. I sat in the stands for 3 hours in an absolute monsoon. Dry as a bone and the jacket is completely wind proof. I do have one regret. When the salesman at REI suggests rain pants to go along with the jacket JUST SAY YES!!! I declined and my lower half was soaked. Forecast calls for rain all day for this week’s game. I can assure you I’ll be grabbing a pair of those pants.

Great Outer Layer
I received this free product in exchange for my honest review.
First of all, a little about my rating criteria. I am a retiree who is fortunate to still be able to travel. Regardless of the season of the year or the length of the trip, I try to limit myself to 1 carryon rollaboard and 1 personal bag. Since I need to bring CPAP equipment, I value light weight, compactness and versatility -- which this jacket provides.
First an aside. I almost always bring a synthetic fleece hoodie with me. Even in summer, airplanes can be cool and I'd rather not trust that a clean blanket will be available. Fleece has also kept me comfortable in cold meeting rooms/conferences. When fully unzipped, fleece is especially breathable and provides just a touch of warmth. When fully zipped up, the fleece and hood keep my core and head warm. It also works as a nice pillow, if needed, and the hood can be used as eye shades to sleep or end conversation with a chatty seatmate. However, fleece will not work well in rainy, snowy or windy conditions.
Whenever rain, snow or wind are expected, I add an outer layer like this. This jacket is made of Goretex, a premier waterproof/breathable fabric. It's also windproof. The combination of the REI stretch fleece hoodie (which I previously purchased and reviewed) with this REI jacket will work well in fall, winter and spring. (In summer, I'd pick a lighter weight fleece and a waterproof/breathable jacket with pit zips.) With both hoodie and jacket open, heat build-up is minimized. With both closed and the hoods up, heat retention is maximized. The jacket's lower pockets will keep my hands warm and dry without needing gloves. I guess this is just a long way of saying to dress in layers whether you're out hiking or traveling.
Top Quality Construction: In addition to the breathable, waterproof, windproof Goretex shell, all the the zippers are YKK, which are the best in the industry. The jacket zipper is waterproof (with an inner storm flap) while the pocket zippers are protected by external storm flaps. All zippers close upward (this reduce the possibility that anything should fall out in cases where the zippers are only partially closed) and have pull tabs so they can be opened or closed with gloves on. It appears that all external seams are sealed with waterproof/breathable Goretex tape, so there shouldn't be any leaks. In keeping with compactness, unusually small toggles let you adjust the bottom of the jacket circumference, the opening around your face and the front-to-back spacing of the hood. The lower pockets have gusseted mesh, which means that you can overstuff them if you want to. The inside pockets are all double stitched for durability. The inside corners of the lower pockets have extra Goretex tape discs for extra reinforcement. (on the right upper and lower pockets in the picture).
I didn't have the opportunity to test this jacket in snow or high winds. But I did test it in the rain. As expected, it beads water drops just like a newly waxed car. (see picture)
This size medium jacket rolls up to be a little smaller than a can of Pringles, so it fits into your pack or can be lashed outside to keep it readily accessible.
The blue stretch hoodie and this blue jacket do look good together (see picture) on the trail or traveling, when I limit myself to two color schemes to maximize my ability to mix and match components.

Outstanding protection on a very wet vacation.
I bought this coat for a winter trip to Scotland, which proved to be windy and wet. Pairing it with a light Marmot down jacket proved to be the perfect combination for a lightweight, water and windproof trip exploring the Highlands and cities. In driving, pouring rain, the jacket held up to the elements, repelling the rain and keeping the wind off. As the temperature rose, the armpit vents increased the breathability keeping the inside dry and sweat to a minimum. I love the packability and light weight for travel. Overall, this jacket was well worth the money.

Fabric takes on water
Rain beads up discontinuously over fabric surface. In some spots water beads up on the surface of the fabric in a way that you would expect a Gortex rain jacket to perform. But in other places water doesn't bead, and soaks into the fabric. They call it "XeroDry" and in an ironic way, the name is apt, because out in the rain the famous Gortex fabric of the REI jacket failed, and I was "Zero Dry." Handsome looking jacket but not rain repellent. I'm going to try washing with with Nathan Power Wash to see if that can cure the lack of water-repellency before returning it to REI.

Lightweight but full featured - just watch the fit
1 year ago
I’ve used this jacket on and off for the past few weeks here in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately, our rainy weather turned unseasonably sunny so I’ve been limited in getting it good and drenched! Right off the bat, you’ll notice how lightweight the coat is, with a nice interior texture that’s not immediately plasticky like some lightweight coats. Three mesh lined pockets (two hand, one chest) are here and the hand pockets are pleated for a little extra space. I really appreciate that it’s actual goretex and not a DWR coating on nylon so I know it has durability. I wore it on deck during a ferry crossing and it did an excellent job keeping the high wind out while still staying breathable!
Overall, it’s a well made coat with a lot of attention to detail - adjustment strings are well placed and they’ve mainly paid attention to the details. A few minor complaints keep this from getting a full five stars, mostly not dealbreakers but things to be aware of. First off is that the zipper isn’t two way - if you sit down you can’t let it up from the bottom a bit. Second is that while the cuffs do have Velcro adjusters they aren’t separate material and so they bunch the sleeve a bit. Last is a question of fit - my review copy was an XL hoping for good sleeve length but they are short on my tall frame. It seems that there are tall options so if you have long arms I would strongly encourage that fit.
Overall, a very worthwhile coat - with a couple minor tweaks and a better fit this would definitely have been a five star product!

Used for snowboarding
Used the jacket snowboarding, cold and windy. With the vents opened and wearing a backpack the jacket breathed well and I wasn’t soaked from over heating like other jackets. I’m 5-10 180lbs size large. Had room for a fleece and light synthetic puffy. Blocks out all wind hood is excellent fit, length is perfect. Pit zippers would be a bonus but not needed if not over layered for the activity. Snow and water rolled off the jacket, stayed dry. Bought 2 for myself, one for wife and kids. Great versatile jacket.
