Originally designed way back in 1937, the 22-250 Remington is still going strong. Sometimes called “22 Varminter” or “22 Wotkyns Original Swift”, this caliber can reach a muzzle velocity of over 4,000 fps (Feet Per Second), depending on the load.

What is the 22-250 Round Good For?
Although sometimes used for whitetail deer hunting, the 22-250 Remington is considered a bit underpowered for any big game (and is not legal for hunting in some areas). However, when it comes to target shooting and especially varmint hunting, the 22-250 Rem is a rock star. Coyote and predator hunters love the terminal performance with the very small entrance and exit wounds of certain loads, preserving the pelts. You can even hunt small to mid-size hogs with the 22-250. Here’s a list of some of the most sought-after 22-250 Rem ammo brands for varmint hunting:
Are 223 and 22-250 Bullets the Same?
Although 22-250 Remington and .223 Remington / 5.56 NATO actually use the same diameter of bullet, aka the projectile, the cartridges are very different and not interchangeable calibers. Unless you’re into Reloading ammo, the size of the bullet is nowhere near as important as the size and design of the cartridge, which we generally refer to as the caliber.
Always check the firearm manufacturer’s specifications before firing any type of ammunition through any gun. Failure to do so may result in serious injury up to and including death.
