Buying Advice
How to Choose a Backpack
Types of packs
Backpacking packs can be 30 to 70-plus liters. To choose the right capacity, consider trip duration and the gear you’ll bring.
Backpack features Think about the frame type, location of important pockets, padding and ventilation, among other things.
Backpack fit Your pack should be correctly sized for your torso length (not overall height) and hip circumference. A fit-expert at an REI store can help.

So comfortable, so functional

I bought this pack for a 7 day, 50mi trip in northern Yosemite in July. It was my first trip of more than two nights and I knew I'd need something more spacious than my Kyte 46. I took the time to get measured at REI and have the straps adjusted there with a pro on the spot. On the trail, it was hands-down the most comfortable pack I've ever worn (starting weight around 35lbs, around 27lb by the end of the trip). The hipbelt pockets are a bit stiff making it hard to get on and off, but that meant they were snug and secure while hiking. Every time I tossed the pack on my back, I announced "light as a feather!" and set off on the trail.
That said, I got so hooked on longer multi-day hikes on this trip that now I'm looking for something lighter for future trips (Tahoe Rim Trail, JMT, etc.) At ~4lbs, this pack really adds quite a lot to your base weight. I also found that 65L was probably more than I needed (I had nothing attached to the exterior of my pack, and had no trouble fitting all my stuff inside.) So, while I adored this pack on the trail, I may be returning it for something like the Eja 48.
Overall: five stars in general, but four stars for my needs.

I had a high hope for this pack as it had great reviews. However the hip belt (behind the AntiGravity suspension) hit my bony scrum area in a wrong way in spite of a few adjustments and I found it uncomfortable after a few hours of trial, and had to return it. A friend of mine loves this pack. So it's all about your personal fit. One design miss is that the side compression straps go over outside of the stretch-mesh side pockets. This makes it difficult to put a water bottle back into the pocket. Smarter designs (all other packs I owned) is to keep the side strap and pocket away from each other so the stretch pocket is free to expand.
My pack worked great and it didn’t leave bruises on my collarbones the way several other packs did. I purchased a few other packs from REI and after one hike each had to go back due to bruising. We (pack fitter at REI and myself) were starting to get desperate and began looking at youth packs. The redesign had just come out on this pack so we tried it out. No bruising! And I love all the pockets. Took this to Philmont so I had to carry a lot of required gear and it all fit and the all the pockets helped me stay organized. Especially love the two separate parts of the brain and how much I could fit in there! Excellent pack!

Fits all my gear and is comfortable for long hauls
1 year ago
I was looking for a 65L minimum size bag for general mountaineering and backpacking, so I went into the store to get fitted and browse the different bags. Don at the store was very helpful and picked the Aura AG and it fit perfectly once adjusted. I ended up going online and buying an Enchantment Purple one during the REI annual sale. The gray color is really nice too, though.
I am 5'11" and 200lbs with fairly wide hips. My back length measurement is 17.5" so I am smack in the middle of the two sizes. I ended up going with a M/L and it fits me perfectly after some adjustments.
I could have gone with a cheaper pack, but the AG suspension is a must have for me for long hikes and climbs due to having a separated ac joint in one of my shoulders. The suspension helps keeps a lot of the weight off of my shoulder and stays comfortable even while carrying it for 6+ hours, something I've had trouble with when using other packs. My overall pack weight when fully geared for mountaineering (axes, crampons, helmet, harness, biners, sleeping mat and inflatable pad, etc etc) is just under 40lbs, but I've carried training weights of 45+lbs and had no issues other than that carrying that much weight is just hard in general.
I use the pack with a 3L hydration bladder and an insulated tube, so the issue with the mesh pouches on the side is slightly less annoying for me, but to echo others' sentiments, the cinch straps going over the water bottles is both a blessing and a curse. It's nice to know they are secure, especially on exposed terrain, but they are NOT easy to access. To be fair there is also a hole on the mesh side pouch that does not have the strap impeding it and it makes grabbing a bottle slightly more convenient. I do fear, though, that because the suspension holds the pack away from your body, that the bladder will freeze during colder trips (perhaps I will update when I find out)
The sleeping bag compartment is big enough to fit my 0F down bag, but it does end up pushing up against the main compartment and making it slightly smaller.
The front zipper pouches are great for storing a camping stove "system" and a small canister of fuel, small first aid kit, fire starter and a c-splint, and other smaller items that may need to be accessed quickly.
There is a pouch that sits behind the front zipper pouches, but I haven't really figured out what should go in there. It's not very secure other than a single plastic clasp, so I don't really want to put anything too important in it, and the front zipper pouches kind of push into it.
The ice axe and trekking pole loops are nice and secure, and since they are isolated from one another, you can carry two ice tools and keep the trekking poles easily at hand, though the bag is very form fitting, so sometimes it's tough to get at them while the it is still on and the straps still tight.
The material of the airspeed mesh on the back is slip-resistant, so it's pretty much impossible to spin the bag around for grabbing things from the front pouches, which is fine, but also the front belt pouches are slightly out of reach if your range of motion isn't great and/or youre a bigger person like I am. But it also really helps keep nice ventilation to prevent excess sweating.
The "jaws of life" waist belt can kind of get in the way of putting the bag down flat when you need to access the front pouches,or want to have a seat, but maybe I just need to break them in more, they also make it difficult to pack into the trunk of the car.
One last gripe I have is that I wish it had more dedicated loops for lashing gear to the outside.
Because the pack is so form fitting, you should definitely get fit in-store before buying.
Tl;Dr Overall, I'm very happy with this bag so much so that my hiking buddy got one too. If the pack fits you, it's great and super comfy and keeps the weight off your shoulders.
If you're a good packer, it'll hold everything you need for multi-day hikes and climbs unless youre like climbing Denali or something . So far its been very durable and the Osprey warranty is second to none.

Worth it.

I used this on a the JMT for three weeks. Fit was great, pack did not sway and held ten days of food with no problem. The suspension system is a dream. My only set back is the side pockets were annoying and... The pack wasn't as durable. I came home with a few scrapes and tiny holes despite trying to keep it from getting damaged. Yes, I will buy it again and again because even if it's not durable it made carrying over 50 pounds even when I twisted my ankle easy. It did it's job, kept my gear safe and help me carry it well.

Osprey Aura Women’s
Bought this for my wife. She’s 5’1” 135lbs. This pack fit amazing. Lots of adjustments including the belt. The belt also has lots of padding, which she liked over her old pack. Was not sure about the side zippers for the main pack but they did come in very handy. Now I want them. Osprey did this pack right. Only thing I would like to see changed is the pockets for water bottles. They are the same on my 2017. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but the compression straps I think should go under the water bottle pocket not over them. Makes its tough to get them out by yourself. Still a great pack, now I want one.

It’s like I wasn’t carrying anything

This is my first larger backpack and I must say the suspension system makes it feel like I’m hardly carrying anything at all. I took My bag out for a trial run completing 14 miles with only 22 lbs just to see how it would carry. It worked beautifully. Zero back pain or hot spots.

In Store

I have been trying to find a replacement pack and have tried on several brands and styles over the past few months. I was in store recently and tried on this new pack from Osprey. I already liked the compartments of the Aura 50 from a previous pack I had, but the version prior to this one was not comfortable and I thought I was done with Osprey. However, trying on this new version felt totally different and better--the 'jaws of life' hipbelt isn't quite as stiff, but still somewhat tricky to get on. I'm not 100% convinced I'll like the mesh suspension stuff, bc I'm concerned it will fail sooner than I want it to, but I'll give it a try. I typically carry a 50l bag, but might try carrying items for others on upcoming adventures--so I went with the 65l. I'm 5'3", 165lbs and a xs/sm back length. Hope this review helps! Giving 4 stars until I actually TRY TRY it out. :)

Big fan!
I was gifted the older model of this backpack a couple years ago as a new backpacker and it has since seen some real fun! The size is great for someone who tends to over pack and it worried about "not having the right thing". I really love the antigravity back panel, I don't feel the pack move as much while walking like you would for a typical commuter backpack. I'm still finding pockets and loops to put my stuff in. Just little features a new backpacker wouldn't know about. My only complaint about the one I have is the raincover wasn't included so I had to purchase one.
I'm excited to purchase a smaller size, maybe 55L, and add the new PhotoLid to it!!

Great Pack for Multi-Day Adventures
Hey peeps, I used this pack for the Uinta Highline Trail - 6 days on. Most of all LOVED the stretchy low back support system, micro adjustments while hiking, the easily accessible water bottle slide ins, and the stuff section on the back of the pack. It was hard to fit my phone in the zippered front pouch plus snacks - and would suggest that OSPREY add a chest pocket for phones. The rain cover did rip on this trip, during a crazy hailstorm adventure! Honestly a perfect pack, will be buying another for other smaller/larger adventures! I really feel Osprey has the upper hand on great contouring for a pain free back experience!

Great pack for gals with short torsos!
I tried on various packs but I found out that my torso is very short. I am 5’2 and 140 pounds. The Gregory packs just didn’t fit me right due to my torso being too short.
This pack fit great (xs/s). It’s very comfortable and distributes weights well.
