Everything I was looking for

I looked at several boats before deciding on the Skylark. Fit and weight were the most improtant criteria. I am 6'4", 190 lbs. and size 13 shoe. Most boats were too small or too heavy. I mainly paddle on local lakes and transporting/loading the boat is easy due to the light weight. The style is attractive and the stability is great. (I do not think that it would roll unless I intended to) It is a flat water boat, yet able to handle the unexpected conditions that occur. Paddling conditions have ranged from flat calm water to rain, ice and wind chopped waves over 1' (able to surf in the right conditions) It tracks well and the comfort allows for extended trips. In a year and 1/2 I've logged over 350 mi and the only reservation has been that I waited to purchase it.

Review after three seasons paddling

This is my third season paddling my Skylark. I have used it in mostly flat water: brooks, rivers, lakes and the coastal areas around Salem, Marblehead, Boston and Cape Ann in Massachusetts. Occasionally with waves up to 2 feet. Although I am aware that the recommendation is to use a longer kayak in the ocean, my experience with the Skylark has been very positive and I feel safe going out to the islands when the conditions are favorable and within three or four miles from land. I don't need wheels or help to carry it to the water edge, is spacious enough to carry light camping gear (I did a one night/ three day trip on the Connecticut River in 2020) and strong enough as I had several encounters with logs and rocks. Easy to maneuver and good tracking. I can easily maintain a 3 miles per hour pace and it. Great product!

LOVE IT!

Second of these we have bought. During Covid when it was almost impossible to find anything, I picked up a Skylark and a Delta 12. They are similar and basically the same kayak from different makers. Took the Delta out once and returned it. The Delta is nice, but the Eddyline Skylark, for me, is a lot better kayak. Moves better, tracks much better. We have three Eddylines now. Two Skylarks and a Sitka. Love them. They are NOT inexpensive, but worth it. So great you have the confidence with REI to be able to take something back if you don't love it.

Outstanding for Guiding Flatwater Day Trips

As a volunteer nature guide, I needed a kayak that was comfortable, relatively light, and fast enough to corral other paddlers. The Eddyline Skylark meets these needs. The seat is comfortable for 8 hours of paddling. The kayak is light enough to be easily car-topped and stored by one retiree. The boat tracks well and enables me to rapidly move around in a group of paddlers in the nature programs. The bonus is that it is a gorgeous kayak. I receive many compliments and young kayakers often ask to sit in it. While the kayak is still new, thus far I am very pleased with the design, performance, and comfort of the Eddyline Skylark.

Great lake kayak

I bought this kayak last year and have taken it out many times. It handles and tracks really well at the lake. I predominantly go kayaking in Lake Sammamish, and it does well with the waves caused by all the boats. My 9 year old daughter has used it, to my boyfriend (6'1'') to myself (5'7''), and we have all loved it. It is light weight enough for me to load and unload by myself and carry it on my shoulder for several hundred feet.

The Go-To Boat For Flat Water

This is the perfect boat for small/medium size paddlers at all skill levels on day trips at the lakes and flat river portions of the Deschutes River (and elsewhere) around Bend. If your goal is day trips, easy paddling on sheltered water, and easy transport then this is really the only choice. Construction quality is top notch. The boat is rugged and light. And last, but not least, it handles superbly for a shorter boat. Good speed, easy to paddle, tracks well, very stable and maneuvers with the best. Yes it costs a little more than the rotomoulded boats, but it keeps its value over time.

Skylark vs Rio

See also my review of the Rio. The main difference between the two kayaks is what size person can fit. The Skylark is 3" longer, 2" wider, and the cockpit is both longer and wider, but the critical difference is the leg & foot room. The Skylark is 9.5" longer from the bulkhead to the front surface of the seat back (54.5" vs. 45"), much greater than the difference in overall length. It is 6 lbs heavier. As previously noted, at 5'10" with a 30.5" inseam and 12.5 size shoe, I simply could not fit in the Rio, even by placing my feet beyond the braces, against the bulkhead. My feet were totally jammed together, overlapping, and pressed against the top of the deck. Plenty of room in the Skylark, even for a much taller person.

Not just for day trips...

Some reviews online say this is just a "day trip" kayak. While it works great for a day trip, it also works very well for extended trips. I am 225lbs and loaded it with 25lbs of camping gear, 7lbs of kayak gear (paddle, PFD, bilge pump, ropes, etc.) and 12lbs of food. I did a 6 day kayak camping trip covering more than 45 miles. The boat handled very well, even when fully loaded. It tracks well and no issues with water getting in the hatches. Because the hatches are small, just put your stuff in 5-10L bags, and don't forget there is a big space between your feet and the front bulkhead that easily held a 13L Sea to Summit bag stuffed with my sleep stuff. Highly recommend this boat!
