Do R-Values Really Matter? 3 Myths About Sleeping Pad Insulation
One term you’ve probably seen while shopping for a sleeping pad is "R-value," a standardized measure of insulation. Despite its importance, there a...

Its good for the soul to admit it when we are wrong and I sure was, Ever since these came out I thought they would be great, wonderful for cold feet, just what I needed in camp and at home, something I would be using all the time......but I just knew my size 15 feet would never fit in them. Watching these go on sale, go off sale, seeing Tayson rave about how well they work, just fueled my discontent for not having them. Finally I could take it no more - a pair were on order. So I admit, I was wrong, they fit, they are comfortable, they are not too warm, they are not too cold, they on my feet in bed, on my feet in my quilt, and on my feet every night since they arrived. So, I was wrong - don't be like me and just order a pair.
Hey, Outdoor Vitals gets all my money. Even the spare change that purchased this excellent product.
Like other reviews, I would sacrifice a little bit of weight to have some hand pockets. Otherwise, I am very happy with mine. Order one size up.
I own two pair. Great for the gym and an excellent hiking shorts. I will take these on the Camino de Santiago. Outdoor Vitals for the win!!
This sun hoodie is a very virtual piece of kit and something that should be in your pack at all times, even if you’re just out going to play pickle ball. It’s exceptionally well made weave is very good on this. The seems are very robust and it’s something that I think that’s necessary on that chilly day or on that sunny day even if it’s hot.
Took it out on my first day hike today. 15lb total with 3 liters of water on board. The. pack was VERY comfortable. Took me about the first mile to dial-in the harness and after that I almost forgot I was carrying a pack. The medium fits me like a glove. I really like the harness — absolutely the most comfortable pack I’ve worn. I’m not quite sure how I’m going to get enough in it to do an overnight, but I’m up for that challenge!
What I need is an ultralight packable daypack that is there when I need it and virtually invisible when I don’t. Sure, I’ll use this when I go hiking, but I really got it for protest marches and rallies. Pro: Super lightweight, so I’m not exhausted or overheated by too heavy gear. The pockets I need, no more no less: right outside pocket for water, and the left for rain gear (poncho and mini-umbrella); larger interior pocket against my back for notepads, signs, or any item that will give the pack structure; smaller interior pocket at front of pack for things I’ll need in a hurry like earbuds, etc. The straps fit with help of sternum strap so pack stays in place and doesn’t bounce about when I’m moving briskly. Con: Very little structure, so you have to plan for that. Outside pockets are really best suited for <1 Liters bottles. I found my SmartWater bottle far too big for the structureless form to hold up. Still, when you use the pack for what it is, not for what it’s not, then it’s just right for the task.
Purchased the Drifter 16L for two of my grandchildren that like to experience the outdoors. They are big enough now to carry their own packs on day hikes. Can't think of a better way to introduce my grandchildren to ultralight gear.
My only regret is not getting this quilt sooner. The temp rating is completely accurate and the side straps are convenient and easy to use. I'll be ordering a second one for my son.
Living in the desert, water is a huge priority. We don't always have the luxury of a clear Chrystal creek. The Cnoc works awesome as extra storage or with my filter. It packs up nicely and is easy to clean. Definitely worth the money.
I have several filters I've used and they have let me down including the pumps that were all the rage when I was younger. The S. Mini was too hard to filter through for my kid. The Grayl is great, but I don't want the bulk all the time. This filter is lightweight and easy to pack. Works with all kinds of bottles and comes with an adapter to transfer directly into a regular gas station water bottle. It filters easily so my younger kids can use it.
When I was younger, I was in Scouts and had an old Jansport that weighed several pounds and loaded it up. Shoes and pads hung out of the sides as the zippers tried to burst open. It was a feat to get on my back. Later, when I was a young adult I "upgraded" to another pack that had the same traditional features, still weighing several pounds empty. Even trying to purchase UL gear to get the weight to a manageable level, I already was starting with a deficit. Now that I'm a few decades older, and my kid just started scouts, I needed something with modern materials and a manageable weight. The Shadowlight was the perfect upgrade as my older gear went to my kid. We had our first camp out this past weekend and it packed everything well and balanced well on my "not so young" back. I couldn't be happier with the pack. The material is well made and the design is well thought out. I have never been more comfortable. I'm looking forward to years of Scouting with my kid, who will probably get this one when I buy another OV pack for myself!
Impressive poles - very light weight, almost weightless. I use these all the time hiking in NH & VT. I was afraid that being carbon they would snap on me but they have held up really well - maybe the lower section being made out of aluminum has something to do with that.
My only complaint is that the straps loosen up with use. So I'm frequently readjusting them to be snug (I'm a believer in letting the straps do the work, not my hand grip).
Unfortunately it appears that the C3 Cloud is no longer being manufactured by Komperdell.
This pole has my strongest recommendation.
This quality addition to my shoulder strap keeps water or a can of bear spray in easy reach without having to remove your eyes from the trail. The pocket attaches very easily and securely to the shoulder strap.
Just got done with a 10 day trek through Nepal and the backpack was phenomenal!
My buddies that I went with both had ZPacks and honestly I’m really happy I had the OV CS40. In comparison, the zpack was certainly light, but it lacked in a lot of areas. Notably ZPack did not have a bladder storage or way for their bladders to be easy accessible, so they had to carry their bladders and use water bottles on top of that. The gram was also not comfortable on the zpack, it looks great and is light weight, but not as comfortable.
The only benefit the zpack had was being waterproof, but so is the CS40 (to a point) it s seems are just not taped. Although, when it’s raining you have to wear a poncho and either way everything becomes waterproof. The mesh out part on theirs also got snagged and cut from both inside and out of the mesh sack. That’s because it’s made of mesh with big holes, my CS40 didn’t show any wear, sure it will someday, but it doesn’t snag!
Also, their ZPacks were way more expensive.
All in all, get this pack, super comfortable and transfers weight perfectly. Get it.
