Good cold weather general-use coat for kids
This is an impressive coat for its size and weight. I had to wait for a bit to write a review because the weather has been so up an down that my daughter didn't need to wear it for any reason when I initially received it. However, she finally has and I got some photos of her having fun playing outside on the playset with it. What I like about the coat: I like that the sleeves are adjustable and can be extended. It was too small for my son, but fit my daughter pretty good, but the sleeves need to be lengthened so she can wear it for a little longer into the season. I also like the vented sides under the armpits. For as light as it is, it is pretty warm and my kids are very active and warm up quickly so having the vents helps let heat out and helps my daughter regulate her body temp better. I also found the pocket on the sleeve really good for my kid, and kids in general. Having a safe a secure place to put a house key or anything that you don't want lost is great. The coat has three zipper pockets (two hand pockets and one on the left arm sleeve). All work well and are helpful. The other feature that was liked was the button waist band. Nice that it is there to block what would likely be snow rising up underneath the jacket that would make kids cold. The shell of the coat it good too as it will shed water easily and block the wind, snow, water, ice from getting to the insulation on the inside. It is a good all-around coat in my opinion for kids. Definitely worth a look for a winter general use coat. There is not much to dislike about this coat. It is warm, it is "light" weight over all, and it has several nice features to it that make it a worthy winter coat for my kids. I would use it as a general use coat for my kids when they are playing outside or when we are out hiking/exploring in the woods and trails in our region. What I like, but they don't necessarily like, is the color, but that is a personal preference issue only. I like it because it is bright and easily visible from a distance, which is exactly the reason my daughter isn't the biggest fan and it is not "girly" enough for her. But that has nothing to do with the function of the coat.
Great for cold weather.
Tested by 10 year old daughter. Things she liked: Inside felt comfy. Jacket felt big but good for extra layers/snow pant bibs. Arms moved easily (good for climbing trees.) LOVED the fuzzy pockets. Long sleeves with velcro were a big hit (Excited to use sledding.) She liked the bright color but wished there were more options. Liked the snow skirt - hopes it will keep snow out while sledding. Things she did not like: Zipper was tough to zip all the way up and got stuck on the flap. Collar kept poking her in the neck. Things I noticed and liked: Very waterproof material. Waterproof zippers are great. Extendable sleeves seem like a great idea. I wonder: How effective will the tiny vents be while being super active in the snow? How easy it will be to extend the sleeves? How long will the waterproofing last? (ex. in extended rain.)
Colorful, waterproof kids ski jacket
Bright colors, this jacket really stands out - always nice when keeping tabs on your kid 😄. Waterproofing seems good, at least in some light rain. The inner band is tight and should do a good job keeping snow out. The fit is slim. There's enough room for some light layering under it. Probably would be too light for cold days on the slope, maybe down to mid 20s. Looking forward to getting it out for ski/snowboard season.
Great winter jacket with a few nitpicks
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Upon delivery, my first impressions of this jacket were that it is remarkably thin and lightweight. I got a size 8, and it shipped smaller than the jacket we got for our 4 year old. With the mid-tier synthetic fill, this will be warm on its own a lot of the time but I expect we'll need some layers on the coldest winter days. That being said, it's a good balance of not being overly warm on normal winter days, especially with the warm Colorado sun. It was amply warm on our test hike in the mid-30's at altitude. The waterproofing is great, as advertised. Left standing water on the seams for over a minute with no noticeable bleed through. I love the built in powder skirt, as this is our kid that likes to play hard and get snow everywhere, and this will keep the snow out better. Also, though this fits great on our 8 year-old as-is, we're also excited for the built in let-out system that will allow this to grow with her. As far as the nit-picks, my wife and daughter aren't in love with the color, though we like it better in person than the appearance on the website. More of a bright "Broncos" orange than the muted appearance in the picture. She'll be easy to spot on the mountain though! Additionally, the front zipper comes up maybe an inch higher than desirable - I suspect we won't zip the jacket fully up until she's a bit bigger as it gets in her face and bothers her. With all that in mind, it's a great jacket and we're looking forward to a great ski season this year with it!
BEST KID WEAR
I am so impressed with the quality of materials and attention to detail. The fabric breathes while keeping the warm and moves with the body. I love that it isn't restrictive, isn't crunchy, and definitely not suffocating like other brands. My 9year old boy has destroyed many jacket zippers, lining, and holes. Therefore, I was shocked and amazed that Hootie Hoo withstood my rowdy kid test. This is the ONLY jacket he has worn for 3 years now and and it still looks and works like new. 100% Worth the money!!! I'll be getting him the next size up and saving money by choosing quality over what's the cheapest.
Awesome Kids Ski/Snowboard Jacket
Super warm and weather proof jacket for kids that like to play in the snow all day. My son who runs warm wore this with just a thin base layer underneath all season and was warm all season even on cold/windy days. My daughter who runs very cold was able to wear 2 layers underneath, stay warm, and still have great range of motion for skiing/snowboarding. Lots of pockets for food storage with big pull tabs so kids can unzip pockets on their own. The colors are great and easy to spot on the mountain - I would recommend a darker color if you ride chairlifts in the PNW - because the lighter colors do stain easy. If you are looking for a top of the line kids insulated jacket I would highly recommend the Hootie Hoo Pinnakle 2L Insulated Jacket.
