Good Basic Mug for Backpacking
Good, basic mug. Very lightweight, so ideal for backpacking. Nylon handle is not necessary but it makes it easy to clip onto the outside of your bag. The insulating material is a fabric which makes it comfortable to hold but your mouth does then touch the fabric as you drink, which I don’t love. Inside of mug is plastic so if you fill it with other gear when not in use the items do not clang around, which is nice.
Best Backpacking Mug ever
I have been using the GSI Backpacker Mug ever since they came out and own 4 well-worn mugs myself. The old metal cups burned my lips off on the first sip while the second sip of coffee was cold. Liquids and food keep their temperatures for a long time- even in adverse conditions. These weigh about the same as lightweight tin cups but are much, much more versatile with cup volume markings I scratched on for years before GSI printed them on (Still good to make small scratches in plastic because their paint starts to go away after serious use.) I lead backpacking trips in the Sierra Wilderness a few times per year and make gifts of these excellent cups to new additions to our packing groups. Those receiving them have been converted to this as their only cup.
Great backpacking mug!
These mugs have weathered 6 years of backpacking flawlessly. Very kid friendly, easy to clip on with small beaner. Keeps hot chocolate warm in the evening and instant oatmeal in the mornings. Measuring cup an added bonus.
How have I missed these for so long????
These are great! Don't know how I missed them all these years. I love the inner plastic measurer and the outer insulation works well to keep liquid warm. No rattling around! And they're a tiny bit lighter than the sea-to-summit plastic mugs, which we've been using most recently, and have liked, but these suit us better. Yes one's lower lip touches the outer fabric a bit, but that doesn't bother me or my husband at all. Excellent non-spill drinking top, too. Easy to clip on outside of pack, if you need to. We got one of each color so we can tell the coffee from the tea in the morning.
Lightweight but retains smells
This is a very lightweight mug with some great features (insulation, lid). But after using it for lentil soup one night, it still smelled garlicky for my morning tea. I camp-washed it with biodegradeable soap and everything, but the smell didn't go away until I got to the frontcountry and a dishwasher. I need a mug that I can use for dinners and breakfasts, so this was kind of a dealbreaker. I also found the lack of a lip kind of off-putting -- your bottom lip is basically on the cloth sleeve when you sip-- but not a dealbreaker per se. On the plus side, my mug now makes a great measuring cup for dog food, so there's that.
Short usable lifetime for this mug
I've had this mug for just over a year and used it maybe half a dozen times in different camping situations. The seal between the mug lid and the mug itself is no longer intact. Presumably, the rubber ring on the perimeter of the lid that forms the seal to the mug body is at fault. The result is that even when dry and not in use, the lid doesn't even stay attached to the mug. And when trying to sip from the mug, the seal leaks so that there's dripping from the border between the lid and mug. I tried to get it replaced at REI but their customer service counter told me that because it's been just over 1 year since my purchase, they won't replace it.
Not perfect, but well worth the cost and weight
I've had one of these for over 5 years and found it to be a perfect take-along for any kind of outing, especially when paired with a GoBites Duo utensil set. It's perfect for coffee, cocoa, soup, instant oatmeal, etc. and is easy to clean. Another reviewer mentioned his mug retained flavors, but I've not had that experience. The only complaints I have are 1) the measurement markings are starting to wear off (again, it's 5+ years old and has been washed hundreds of times) and the nylon layer on the coozie frays a bit (but it's easy enough to hit it with a lighter - looks bad, works great).
Not a good mug. THE BEST MUG.
I took a chance on this mug, back when GSI stuff was considered "not suitable for backpacking", mostly because it was inexpensive. This is not only a "good" mug, it is the BEST mug. The handle is a strap, it packs to a cylinder if needed. The handle can be used to tie the mug on the outside of the backpack. The "koozy" makes the mug QUIET when bouncing on the outside of the backpack. The lid keeps the drink warmer, and bug and debris free. This does NOT seal like a Nalgene, you do not want to strap it while filled. You might walk with it ... but that's no way to enjoy coffee. Or oatmeal. Or ramen. Or the other things I've eaten out of it. When I bought mine, I was kinda thinking "economy", but today, I can afford any product on the market. I still choose this mug, I'm buying another today for my wife, who is joining me on my next section of the AT.
It holds drinks..
Great for coffee or any hot beverage. Paired with the GSI coffee rocket, its only 6 oz total weight. The plastic cup has 4, 8, and 12 oz markings on the inside as well.
you can do better
The insulating sleeve does work reasonably well to keep things warm, and I like that this mug has measuring guidelines printed on the side. (Although I've had mine for a couple years and those have degraded a bit.) My gripes: 1. The plastic of this mug REALLY retains smells. That's been especially tough for backpacking, when I want to be able to use it flexibly for drinks or meals. 2. The lid, which is held on with a little silicone gasket, unseals itself all the time. It makes the mug impractical for cold soaking food while you walk around. Outside of backpacking, it's super annoying for trying to use this mug as a regular travel mug in the car etc. Between these two issues, I'm planning to get rid of mine.
