While .223 ammo and 5.56x45mm NATO ammo have many similarities, these ammunition types are not completely interchangeable. Shooting .223 ammo through a firearm chambered in 5.56 is safe, but not always optimal. However, you shouldn’t use 5.56 cartridges with a .223 weapon, as the higher pressure may cause a malfunction when firing. The one caveat to this is if your weapon is chambered in .223 Wylde, which is rated to withstand the higher pressure of 5.56x45mm NATO ammo. With that safety tip in mind, .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO cartridges are an excellent choice for home defense, hunting, and range training. We carry a wide selection of 223/556 rifle ammo, including PMC Ammunition 223 / 5.56 Ammo, Winchester 223 / 5.56 Ammo, Hornady 223 / 5.56 Ammo, and more.image

FAQ:

Do .223 and 5.56 use the same bullet?

Yes, these cartridges use the same caliber of bullet. However, they are still different, and you have to be careful when choosing which one to shoot out of your rifle or carbine. Since 5.56 has more pressure than .223 Remington ammunition, it is not recommended to shoot 5.56 from a receiver that is only rated for .223 Rem. On the flip side, if your barrel and receiver are stamped with 5.56, you should have no problem shooting .223 ammo.

What are the benefits of .223 ammo?

One of the reasons why .223 is one of the most popular rounds in the United States is because it is widespread and affordable. Whether you’re looking for full metal jacket (FMJ), hollow point, or steel penetrator rounds (also known as green tip rounds), you can usually find these cartridges anywhere that sells ammo. And, we have plenty of options available here at OpticsPlanet from your favorite brands, like PMC Ammunition 223 / 5.56 Ammo, Winchester 223 / 5.56 Ammo, Hornady 223 / 5.56 Ammo, and more!

Can an AR 15 shoot .223 ammo?

Generally, yes. Most standard AR 15s are chambered in either .223 Remington, 5.56x45mm NATO, or .223 Wylde, and all of these can accept .223 Remington ammunition. However, “AR 15” is a general term, and you can get this style of tactical carbine in a wide variety of calibers. Make sure to check your specific weapon before loading any ammo to make sure you have the right caliber.
