Sun sleeves - sun protection alternative.
I've been using different "sun" sleeves similar to these for several years now as an alternative to slathering on sunscreen. They work well for me. I wear them for hiking, biking, & golfing. I went with medium size which I knew would probably fit quite tight initially but I enjoy the compression effect this provides and they stay in place better -plus my experience has been that they usually stretch out a little over time after repeated use & washes. As a sizing reference, I'm 5'11" weigh 170 & have a 13.75 - 14 inch bicep. By the sizing chart I should have bought at least a large size, which probably would have fit, but I like the snug fit.
Great product
I got these for MTB season in north GA, and I love them. I pre-moisten them for maximum cooling effect, and they feel like riding in the AC. If you don't wet them, they can take some time to "sweat through". Either way, they are skin tight so they don't feel wet. Very durable - I have caught them on branches and thorns asking the trail, and they hold up well against the abuse. Very comfortable - they stretch well in all directions. You'll hardly know you're wearing them. Excellent sun protection. I prefer these to sun block. My only complaint is that the sizing seems a bit small. I'd highly recommend trying them on first to find the best fit.
Amazingly cool
Bought and used these for traveling in Southeast Asia and they worked amazing. I was walking around in 90-100 degrees fahrenheit weather during midday and when I would put these on I felt much cooler, never got sunburned and I think they look nice too, just looks like I'm wearing a snug fitting long sleeved athletic shirt under my tshirt. I'm thinking they'll help with the mosquitoes at night too. These sleeves are surprisingly long, I'm 6'3", 190lbs, and I got size Medium which fit me perfectly and cover my whole arms from wrist to shoulder.
Great sun protection but poor stitching
These sleeves offer great sun protection, they stay in place, and they are comfortable even on very warm days. I'm 5'4", 128 lbs and the small fit well. I'm giving them only two stars because the stitching is coming apart between the sleeve and the elastic band. These sleeves only lasted a month before the stitching started to fail and I have since been sewing them back together as necessary. I might have just gotten a dud but there are probably higher quality sleeves out on the market that will last longer than a few rides.
Design change = fail
I have several pairs of PI arm warmers, both white and black, that I've bought at different times over the years. They fit right, are durable and a good value. These however are not. PI has changed everything - sizing, material, grippers, etc. The old ones had more stretch, were longer, had elastic and rubber grippers in the right places. The new fabric does not have as much stretch. The "large" size is too big for skinny cyclist arms and is too short. They slide down all the time. If you can find the old style, get them, but not these.
Better than expected!
I saw someone wearing these on a ride in June and had to ask "Why the sleeves?" I was skeptical about their performance, but remembered them when REI's Labor Day sale came around and bought a pair for myself. I wore them for the first time when starting an early ride on a chilly morning. They didn't constrict, stayed in place, felt good, and looked good (as others told me). As the day warmed up, I considered taking them off, but decided to keep them on to take advantage of the protection from the sun. Absolutely no regrets.
They are Ok
I have ridden quite a bit this summer with these sleeves. They work very well for sun protection and they stay where you put them, no sliding down. They are comfortable to wear and don't pinch off your circulation. Ridding in the upper 70's for temperature they did have a mild cooling affect. Ridding in the mid 90's they blocked the sun but I didn't feel any real "cooling". Good sun protection, very mild cooling affect in high temperatures.
Arm saver
For whatever reason my arms lobster in the sun, the rest of me barely turns pink. I was recently on a longer than normal ride. I started out early in the morning and decided to walk around downtown Denver for a while before riding back. By the time I got home my arms were hot, in pain, and I knew I would pay for it for the next few days. The next day I walked into an REI to get these because I knew I would need them again. I wore them on my drive home and the next few days on rides; either under a long sleeve shirt or by itself with a short sleeve shirt. I did not notice or feel anymore burning and it has allowed me to keep riding even though I am still a bit burnt. My wife says she will steal one to wear on her right arm because that is where she burns because of our long trips during the summer. I may have to buy her a pair and keep these in with my cycling pack.
Good for non-peak summer use
Worked great for sun protection but they are warm. If you have very sensitive skin as I do I believe they really do deliver at their rated SPF, based on my non-scientific experiments with good sunscreen vs these sleeves. I found this produce to be better suited for seasons other than summer in Colorado and reverted to strong Rocky Mountain Sunscreen in the heat. In terms of performance these sleeves stayed put and worked well when I use them but even in white they are warm; you will feel them in the high 80s and 90s and likely be uncomfortable, based on my experience. They are very durable and have shown no signs of wear in 1 season (amazing to me!) I am very much a fan, since it is nice to set aside sunscreen when I can (even sensible sunscreen is not benign if it actually works) and in Colorado the sun is always a factor at this altitude. I will be using them a lot more this fall since having the added warmth is a welcome feature. I would definitely recommend these to friends.
Out of necessity...
Paying for the sins of my youth now that I’m older. Recent Pre-cancerous skin conditions have encouraged me to cover up more exposed skin. Wore these recently on some clear days and was pleased with the way they felt. I was expecting to be to warm but I felt like they were helping keep me cool. And no burn (or tan).
