I carried these gloves for about the last 1,000 miles of my AT thru hike- they kept my hands warm even when it was wet out & the touchscreen feature actually does work. I'd recommend these to anyone.

Negative warmth

First off, I received a email from REI asking me to write a review about these—I’m not a review guy. But the email reminded me how much these gloves sucked so I’m gonna write this review real quick. I just wanted a thin warm pair of black gloves for when I go running in sub 35 degree weather and I thought these would fit the bill. I don’t want some huge Mount Everest gloves or ski gloves or whatever—just some thin, black, and most importantly, warm gloves. And when I think smartwool, I think warm. But whatever synthetic material they make these out of so that you can use a touch screen literally sucks the heat from your hands and makes them feel cold. I’ve noticed this with most gloves made for touch screen use—they all suck—and they give your hands what feels like “negative warmth”. My hands literally felt cold when I put the gloves on like the gloves were strangely sucking the heat from them. I thought I was crazy but my girlfriend said the same when I told her to try them. Luckily I could return them but the REI guy made a little comment “well they’re liner gloves” which after googling it apparently means you put them inside other gloves and wear 2 pairs at the same time. Well if that’s the case, why are they marketed as “touch screen gloves”? So you can take the second pair of gloves off, and leave these on to text with? Alright, well I learned something new, thanks man. The gloves suck. Also for the sake of argument, if these are meant to be worn under other gloves, they’re too bulky for that anyway, so they’d still suck. If I’m gonna wear a second pair of gloves inside my main gloves, I’d want them nice and thin…and warm—like some long John’s for your hands. These are not that my friend. So in conclusion, for the people looking for a thin warm pair of gloves to wear by themselves without another pair of gloves over them, these things are not only not warm, but they actually make your hands feel cold. If you just want some thin warm gloves, you’re seriously better off with some dollar store gloves, or some gardening gloves from the hardware store if you don’t care how they look. Companies should just go back to making regular thin warm gloves instead of catering to this phone addicted crowd who use their phones so much that they require special gloves with touch screen capabilities. This is smartwool for god’s sake man. They’re supposed to make warm stuff! If there ends up being a like button for these reviews, or an “I found this review helpful” button, and you agree with this point of view about how touchscreen gloves suck and aren’t warm, let’s make this review a petition for glove companies to just make warm gloves again instead of this synthetic touchscreen stuff. Also the website made me edit my previous comment from a 4 letter word to “stuff”, but it was warranted for the record. Over and out. Peace.

I love these gloves ... this is pair #2

I am getting ready to purchase my second pair of these liner gloves that depending on the temperature, I can wear alone or under my mittens. I'm buying a second pair because when it's really cold, and my hands have sweated (or I've pulled the mittens off one time to many) I need to change to a dry pair. I can even tap my iWatch or phone screens and have them open/function. One thing I recently learned from a REI associate, is that if I'm looking for colder temperature gloves, not just wind resistant gloves, that you need a totally different glove. It may be useful to go to the store and speak with an associate.

Not what they used to be.

The addition of polyester to Smartwool's liner gloves has made them less flexible and warm than their previous all-wool liners. Maybe they are more durable, but they are difficult to flex and hard to fit under other gloves or mittens.

Rave for unintentional features

I've had a pair of these for several years and brought them on a month-long winter trip to Massachusetts. I was so disappointed when I lost one, so I immediately ordered another pair that I could pick up locally. I may have originally had size XS because the new small pair is a little too large for my hands. These are liner gloves, so unless the weather is mild, I wear them under a pair of mittens or water-resistant gloves. What I like best about them is that I don't have to take them off to use the touch screen on my phone. I've never been successful with the high-tech gloves, so this is my biggest rave about these liners.

These work well for what I need them for. As a Raynaud’s sufferer my hands are almost always cold. I wear the gloves indoors, and expect to do so year round. I went with Medium and they are a little too long in the fingers (I’m a woman, 5’8” tall and would normally wear a women’s large), but they are good enough. Index fingers and thumbs are touch-screen friendly - no problems with this.

Size guide is inaccurate

My only complaint is that I have to do a return now to get the right size. I followed the instructions in the fit guide and measured my hand exactly as instructed and picked the size according to the posted chart, but they are definitely too small and tight fitting. I don't mean snug, like a liner glove should be, I mean too tight so that there's not enough room for my hand. Otherwis seems like a very good product, and that's the only reason I gave it one star.

Great gloves

So great that they are wool and they really do work with electronics. Beats the frustration of having to take off your gloves when it’s really cold and you need to use a cellphone or…(Or we could just use real maps, compasses and grit. Lol)

Very nice but note that these are men’s sizes

Very nice but too big, so I had to return them. I guess they are men’s sizes, which wasn’t clear to me, since I had filtered my search for women’s clothing.

Go-To Gloves

These are my go-to gloves all winter long. I wear them as liners under ski mitts. As a single layer, they’re warmer than lots of work gloves and casual wear gloves. They’re thin and flexible, which makes them fit great, they’re warm and they look good. What more do want?

Works Well

My original plan was to use these for hiking but they have become part of my everyday wear. They fit well under mittens during subfreezing hikes and walks also works well on days when the hikes start out cool and I need a little coverage. Also works well as everyday wear. Only problem is they roll up well into a small ball and I keep misplacing them. My fault. They wash well and look like new once dried.
