Buy this bottle.

Ahead of a two-week trip to Nepal, I kept reading two things: don’t drink the local water and don’t buy bottled water since there is no recycling infrastructure in Nepal. Thus began my search for a water purification system which led me to the Grayl GeoPress bottle. I purchased it and used it for the next 12 days traveling all over Nepal. All I can say is this thing works. I filled up in airport taps, street lines, mountain streams, hostel sinks, and countless other questionable taps that even locals warned me against using. Every single drop of water from this bottle tasted like pure, clean filtered water. I used it multiple times a day and never once got sick. In terms of durability, this thing is a beast. It can be dropped, stepped on, thrown, and abused and still come out fine. The spout is made from a very strong plastic and the bottle feels extremely durable and high-quality. If you are deciding between sizes, go for the bigger one. It is the perfect size for hiking, brushing your teeth, long overnight bus rides, and sharing clean water with fellow travelers when no clean source is available. It also fits easily in both a day bag and a larger backpacking bag. Anyone traveling to places without reliable drinking water should not leave home without this bottle. It is a true backpacker/traveler essential. On this trip alone, it saved us from wasting about 50 plastic water bottles which alone made it worth every penny!
I wanted to like this so much...
I received this product in exchange for an honest review. You can see the full review on Dirtbag Dreams, but here are the cliff notes: The Grayl Geopress is beautifully and ruggedly designed. All of the parts are durable and seem like they would take some serious effort to break. It is very easy to filter water (the first time), and the water always tastes great (everytime). However, one thing that really drives me crazy is that the time to filter is misleading. Yes - the first time takes roughly eight seconds to filter, but it IMMEDIATELY becomes more difficult to use. I only used it with the tap and in clear mountain streams - never in silty or cloudy water. Within 30-40 presses it was already WELL over Grayl's recommended replacement time of 25s and was really difficult to use. I emailed them about it and they sent me a canned response about cleaning the filter and heavy metals in clear water which makes me think that this is a common problem. Just look at the other reviews saying similar things. I suspect that the reason the filter clogs so easily is that it is TOO good. I believe (I hope) the pores in the filter are so small that they are clogging with even minute traces of particles. To their credit, the water always tastes really fresh after filtering. I'm hopeful that Grayl can eventually find an actual filter that will work better, and because the system is modular you could easily replace the old filters. You would most enjoy this product if you spend all day near water like fishermen or kayakers. Additionally, travelers in third world countries could use this to filter tap water. With that said, I'm not sure that I would recommend this product. I wouldn't say that it is a bad purchase, just be aware that you may have to change the filter MUCH more than expected.
My Kid loves it!
My 4 year old son loved the aspect of drinking water from almost anywhere. It's was tough to push at first, but it became easier after a couple camping trips.
Filters well but quickly becomes hard to use
I just returned from the BWCA, where I filtered only clear water with no visible sediment. The first few presses were easy and went as expected, however it quickly became VERY hard to press. By the end of the four day trip it was taking over a minute of pressing with my full body weight, and I started to dread using it. When it takes this long to press, it's not comfortable or easy to use, and actually takes a lot of energy. I could replace the filter, but I shouldn't have to after one trip to a place that already has very pure water. I will say, however, that the water tastes noticeably better than other filters I've used.
Excellent product from Grayl
I have bought a number of products designed to purify water. Some do the job, but break down after a few uses. ( frustrating when you are 30 miles out, hot and tired). Some clog up, some clean the water, but do not take care of viruses ( a bit of a waste). Some wear you out pumping them.. and some are just plain expensive. Grayl comes with solid research behind it. And if it is clogged, or is at the end of it s service lift, you just replace the filter cartridge, and you are good to go. It is an excellent solution to camping, backpacking, flooding, earthquake preparedness, and the price is right.
Performed poorly in the wilderness.
I purchased this during a member sale well before my planned weeklong canoe trip in Quetico Provincial Park in mid September. I tried it out at home with tap water and it was fine, but by the third day of this trip it was so clogged it was nearly impossible to push water through the system, even with maximum force. Thankfully I had my old Katadyn Hiker Pro filter as a back up, which performed as expected for the rest of the trip. The waters in this pristine Canadian wilderness are very clean, so I attribute this to product defect. Unfortunately I have passed the window of opportunity to return this to REI.
Great purifier to keep you and your family safe
We have traveled to Latin America with the kiddos and our GRAYL was our go-to for fast, delicious, safe, and easy water on the go. Purifying water has never been this easy, and as a traveling couple before having kids, my husband and I have trialed (and erred!) many pumps, sucks, squeezes with a lot of hassle. I love that all it takes is a simple press using the weight of my upper body in a comfortable position, and in about 14 seconds I have the best tasting water to share amongst our family. As long as you can find running water from a stream, tap, falls, or puddle, you’ve got fresh and safe water anywhere. From our wild family to yours, we recommend this product!
Quick and easy
A great piece of kit for me. Lead rope soloing adventures take plenty of weighty gear. This is my new go to way to purify water and carry less water weight. I carry it with me everywhere and purify any water that I consume. Fast and easy. The carabiner strong attachment point is excellent as well. Love this product!
My new favorite way to filter water!
This is my new favorite way to filter water on long hikes and trips into the backcountry. It’s so easy to fill, press, and drink. The design is easy to use, the materials are durable, and it makes for great-tasting, clean water. My MOST favorite thing about the Grayl -- you can CHUG. The secondary reservoir (24 ounces) is enough to feel completely clenched. This Grayl is going to see so many beautiful things from the pocket of my backpack!
Not worth it for hikers/backpackers
Filter blister after two uses. I’m petite so I highly doubt I used too much force. NOT for for long hikes/backpacking/camping, by the time you filter water from source you’ve used too much energy. I’m 115lb I have difficulty using filter unless I put my full weight on it. Stress marks like cracks inside after 10 uses. Even if it did work it produces too little water maybe only good for a day hiker or travel. Also even if you use before boarding plane it could explode due to cabinet pressure.
