I had the prior Remoji, which I loved. Unfortunately I left it in a rental van on a scout trip. When I saw this as the replacement I decided to spring for it. The size feels the same as my old one, but with the added features of dual power (rechargeable pack or AAAs), campfire mode and a different button set up. Overall I like it. I did have to fix some manufacturing/design errors though, like another reviewer. The battery pack would not power the lantern, and the AAAs were in very lightly as well. The battery terminal contacts on one side were too far in, and would not make contact with the pack. Upon adding some pressure to make them reach it would fire up. I had to bend them a little, and then wedge a small bit of folded paper from the instructions to keep the pressure there. After that it works as it should. I have had BD lights for several years now, both small lanterns and headlamps, but it seems their QA/QC has taken a nose dive in the last couple years. Between this and the fiasco on the initial run of Storm 300 headlamps it has made me a little hesitant. At least this was easily fixable - the Storm was a pure design/component issue that could not be remedied at home, although to their credit they did fix the power issues eventually. The campfire mode is neat, but a little gimmicky. I have a similar feature on my Snow Peak mini hozuki, andI never use it. I doubt I will on this one either. The color changing feature is still the same - once you get it rotating you can stop on the color you want, and it will stay there the next time you want to go to the color mode. The default is blue, but easy enough to get to red, green, or any shade in between.

Super cool little unit

I am very pleased with this little lantern. Light weight, compact size makes it easy to tuck into your backpack, or hang on the inside of your tent. The ability to vary the amount of light needed is really nice, as is the strobe feature, which could conceivably come in hand during an emergency (when it's bright, that strobe packs some punch). We've used it under our backyard pavilion (10" x 12") at a medium level so we can enjoy the ambient light of our surroundings, yet still see each other. Easy to hang with a light cord. The overall design just feels good holding it in the palm of your hand - very well designed unit. We don't use the changing color function much, but I imagine that would be a great fun feature for little ones at a backyard party. We use this in conjunction with the BD1500 rechargeable battery, and together they make a great addition to our car camping kit, especially because if we forget to charge the battery at home, we can charge it in the car on the way using the USB port on the charger.

Handy Lantern, especially for car camping

The lantern is very lightweight even with batteries installed. It is fairly easy to figure out the different lantern modes and cycle through them. The campfire mode was really nice, it’s fairly convincing if you hide it under some logs or in a campfire ring. Hanging the light is really easy, the magnetic feet have rubber cushions so you can stick it to your car, or use the two opposing hooks to hang on a line or skinny branch. The light is bright enough for reading but not blinding.

Lasts as long as advertised! Throws a ton of light

I decided to really test whether this stays light as many hours as advertised. I charged it and left it on for a little over 120 hours (which is what was advertised). It is small enough to fit in the palm of my slightly large female hand and throws as much light as much larger units. It lit up the kitchen (approx 16x12) well enough to see major features easily. Within 6 ft you can see every detail. The light cover is well engineered as it doesn't hurt your eyes to look directly at it the way more exposed bulbs do- and yet it easily throws as much light as lamps that have less opacity. The dimming feature is nice for winding down or when you simply don't need or want as much light. The warm, flickering feature is fun and throws as much light as a 3 wick candle. The purple light is faint and works very nicely as a night light- and you can make it super dim or bright enough to see where you are going. The multicolor changing light is really relaxing and we fell asleep to it twice. The dimming and brightening feature is really nice and easy to use. The strobe feature is pretty powerful and works at just about every light setting so you can have it flash at the high and low settings. The material is really sturdy plastic and doesn't scratch super easy but it will scuff if you rub it on a linoleum floor, on asphalt, or in the dirt. But it took a decent amount of abuse from our 5yo who found it and tried to hide it outside in the dirt. The magnets on the underside are tiny and super strong so it sticks well wherever you put it- the side of the car, a fridge, etc. The little hooks on the bottom are handy for hanging from relatively average gauge rope. We were looking mostly at quality, durability, and battery life and this thing scores a perfect 10. It's clear this thing is extremely versatile and the basics barely scrape the tip of the iceberg where this thing's utility is concerned. Highly recommend.

Magnetic bottom so useful and the light so bright

I had it for about 2 weeks and used it indoor and outdoor. The magnetic bottom turned out to be very useful. I can put it on the fridge, metal pergola in our yard, and anywhere with the metal. The magnet is very strong and the lantern will not fall off. It is dimmable at 3 levels but I don't think the camp fire setting has that function, which is a bit unfortunate (I might be wrong but I can't seem to find the way). I got a Black Diamond rechargeable battery to go with but this battery will pop off too easily with a minor impact such as when the lantern is getting placed on the table. Perhaps regular batteries will stay more securely though I haven't tested. Overall I am very happy with this and will surely bring it to my next adventure. The photos included here are my small backyard illuminated by the lantern on the side of pergola, the lantern on the lawn, indoor use in the kitchen without any other light on.

Good but need to fiddle -- as noted by others

As was the case with other reviewers, my lantern worked fine with AAA batteries but not with the BD rechargeable unit. I thought it might be a bad battery, so took both items back to REI. We tried the battery in a new lantern, which didn't work either, leaving me to conclude that I should swap the battery. When this didn't work either after charging, I dug deeper into the reviews and found the hot tip to bend the battery contacts out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Given that I had this issue with 2 different lanterns, and several reviewers report it as well, it seems like a frequent problem. Otherwise, I'm happy with the lantern -- now that it's working.

Nifty little lantern

This is just a well designed piece of equipment. It is sturdy, holds well in a hand, hangs easily on a variety of a hooks, and can even magnetically attach to a metal surface. The range of light goes from high to very dim to suit every occasion. There is a light mode to imitate the flames of a fire, which I don't find to be too realistic. You can also pick any color you want, as the lantern has the hole spectrum. Either to use in a "disco" mode, or set a color and leave it. The two button controls are intuitive enough. Overall, great for car camping to use around the campsite and in a tent, or around a camper.

Holy cow. Wow, Bright!

This thing is small but insanely bright. When I first received it, my thought was that it was smaller than I expected. But, I popped 3 AAA batteries into it, turned it on, and was straight-up shocked at how bright it was. I'm glad I bought two because if I hadn't, I'd be ordering a second, immediately.

Great Lantern but not compatible with BD1500

I found this lantern bright, lightweight and easy to use. Purchased the Moji+ and the recommended rechargeable battery. Unfortunately, I didn't read other reviews about the BD1500 rechargeable battery not working correctly with this light. Returned first lantern thinking it was the lantern, but the 2nd lantern is the same. Works great with 3AAA but not with the BD1500 which is stated on the Moji+ box as compatible. I don't think I should need to bend the lantern contacts to make the rechargeable battery work. This problem needs to be addressed or the box information changed. Will probably keep the lantern and return the $29 rechargeable battery.

The absolute best...

I noticed today that several black diamond head lamps have previously been awarded REI editors' choice awards and I was blown away that this is not amongst them. If I could only take one light with me camping this would be it. It is the most versatile light I own. Because of it's form factor and the simple but clever folding loops on the back I can (1) set it up on a table or other flat surface as a lamp (2) hang it inside my tent and (3) even loop my fingers through it and use it as a flashlight. What more could you ask for? Ok making it fully waterproof maybe but for the price I have zero complaints. It may look simple but it's really a unique item with no competition.

Not the same as the R+

I have the mojo R+ Version of this which I love. Bought this one , just the moji+ thinking it was the same but it is not. It has the option for rechargeable batteries rather than an integrated battery and charging port. So I figured oh well I’ll try it out. Installed the 3 AAA batts and there was so much space in the battery compartment that they will not stay put. The electrical contacts are even spaced apart too far so it won’t even turn on. Definitely a deal breaker. I’ll opt to return and replace with a R+ which are great from my experience.
