CX403 Cycling Shoe

Lake’s top-tier road shoe gets an update in the new CX403. Featuring the same custom fit carbon fiber sole and supple kangaroo leather upper as its predecessor, the CX403’s closure system is redesigned and the added rubber toe bumper helps extend the shoe’s longevity for all the training and racing ahead this season.

Lake has worked long and hard on building the ultra-efficient Custom Fit carbon fiber sole. You may have had carbon-soled shoes in the past that didn’t quite fit, and if that’s the case, you recognize that ultimate power transfer is meaningless if your feet are in agony. But you can say goodbye to the era of compromise, as these are heat moldable, ensuring the perfect fit and incredible heel hold for maximum power transfer.

The Clog

I really wanted to like the Lake CX 403 shoe. Lake makes the best winter cycling shoe on the market, so I was expecting excellence. Build Quality: 5 out of 5 stars. The Lake CX 403 is beautifully built. Craftsmanship is top notch. The leather is nice and the Boa dials are awesome. Although I’ve only worn the shoe for about three months, I suspect the shoe are very durable and will last a long time. Weight: 2 out of 5 stars. With the tremendous build quality comes weight. Compared to other shoes that are more than a decade old, the Lakes weigh more. With the advances in technology in the last 10-15 years, I would have expected these shoes to weigh less. I compared the weight using a scale accurate to 0.1 grams. They are quite bulky. Design/Comfort: 1 out of 5 stars. Not only is the bulk heavy, it detracts from the comfort of these shoes. The carbon comes up the side of your foot when just leather would be lighter and more comfortable. The carbon in the heal area is fine. It's the mid foot carbon that comes up the sides that is so uncomfortable. I put on 8 pairs of winter socks when performing the oven molding process. Even so, these shoes are super uncomfortable in the middle area of the foot. The arch support is extreme and quite uncomfortable. The carbon support on the outside middle of the foot is ridiculous. I’ve had foot cramps lasting days because of this support. The only remedy has been to under tighten the shoes. The toe box and heal of the shoe are comfortable. It’s only the middle section that is so uncomfortable. Customer Service: 0 out of 5 stars. What can I say. Customer service is non-existent. I was provided a name and contact number to help me get the shoes into a useable comfort zone. I called the individual directly at Lake three times. The individual never returned my call. I filled out the online customer service form and never received a reply. Overall: 2 out of 5 stars. The incredible build quality isn’t enough to overcome the lack of comfort, foot cramps and lack of customer service. Update: I finally heard from Lake after posting this review. They had the following to say, which I think will be extremely useful for other riders considering this shoe: The CX403 is a great shoe when it fits the riders foot. However, most riders find that this model does not work for them. It does not matter how much they ride or the level of riding they do. If the shoe does not fit your foot properly, it simply will not work. The other models we offer and that were suggested may be better suited for your foot shape which would allow you to ride without discomfort. The Competition Last models like the CX238 and CX242 are the most popular options we offer because they work for a wider range of riders. These models have a wider carbon fiber sole with plenty of stiffness for power transfer. The wider sole offers more volume from heel to toe which allows a more comfortable fit. For riders who want a Race Last model, but don’t find the comfort or fit they seek in the CX403, the CX332 is the next best option. This model features a dual carbon fiber sole, however because it does not have the same wrapped carbon heel and requires less tinkering to dial in the fit. It also comes in Kangaroo leather, which gives it the same features as the CX403, with reduced weight. I commonly work with consumers who are interested in the CX403, but after pointing out how specific the fit of this model is, decide to go with a different option. From your feedback it sounds like the CX403 is not wide enough through the midfoot, and that you have not been able to mold the shoe out enough to accommodate the volume of your foot. Because of this I do not believe the CX403 was the best option in our lineup for your needs. From your feedback and review, the CX238 or CX332 would be better options for you to explore. Update 2: Given the lack of response (via multiple channels) from Lake, the dealer tried (multiple times) to get Lake to “take care of me,

Solid and comfortable

I have worn these on a couple of rides. They are most comfortable and solid shoes imaginable. I have not heat molded them yet nor do I think it will be necessary. The blue/purple color looks fantastic. They keep my feet plenty warm in the winter. Will they be too hot in the summer? Time will tell but I ride in the early morning anyway. I'm completely satisfied with my purchase.

These shoes run small

First off, these shoes run 1/2 to a full size smaller than the 402 model it replaces and possibly narrower. I have middle of the road medium 43.5 size feet but had to size up to 44 for the 403s and I possibly should have sized up to 44.5 or got the wide version based on the following. There is a point where the outside of my foot touches where the carbon sole gets thick leading to the arch. This is comfortable when cycling but if I walk in these shoes there is painful carbon on bone contact. Example, walking or standing around for 5 to 10 minutes prior to the ride is painful. Since the carbon is so thick in that area, there is no way to heat mold the sole to fit better. To be fair, I have the same issue with the 402 generation although it is a little less noticeable because that generation sizing runs larger. Note, I also have the Assos variant of the 402s which do not have the sole issue at all in the standard 43.5 size.

When I first got the shoes , it took three times to mold them and get it really right. Now it’s really the only shoe I ride on. I have really nice high-end shoes from other brands. None of them feel like the lake product to me and the company is really easy to deal with, if you have any questions or you need to trade sizes, no questions were ask.

Perfect. That's how I'd rate these shoes. After trying many different brands, at many different price points, I've found the most comfortable shoe on the market. I've probably used these shoes for 800+ miles, and can't find anything wrong with them. in other shoes, I'd inevitably find hot spots or other aches on long rides, but not these. Out of the box, they fit my narrow feet without the need to heat mold them; and with each ride they have become more comfortable. The leather is very high quality, as is the whole construction. The price is a bit daunting. However, had I initially purchased them when I first became aware of them, I would have saved a ton of money over the years. They also have a shoe care kit that I purchased. With proper maintenance of the leather, I can see these lasting almost indefinitely.
