Just three short miles from Oliver Lee State Park, our primitive camp doesn't yet have all of the amenities of the state park, but we offer amenities the park doesn't! Your Camp Host, Chef Üdø, is onsite most days and evenings, and has 30 years' experience in the catering and private chef biz, and as a camp host. He's happy to coordinate hot meals for you and your companions! No more need to go into town to get a pizza or some icky fast food! We will make you a homemade pizza, dry-aged steak, brined chicken, buffalo burger, or lasagna...all in-house. Vegan, vegetarian, kosher, low-sodium, and most other dietary restrictions are no problem! We'll bake you a birthday cake, brownies, pie, or even Crème brûlée! Contact Chef Üdø for more details and please check out our menu in the “Extras” section of our campsite listing. We can make just about anything in our sanitary kitchen facilities. We cook with a spirit of Love and inclusion in our kitchen, and it shows! ❤️ Chef Üdø maintains current local food handler's certification, as well as HAACP federal certification. Prices are friendly and competitive with local restaurants. Vacuum-sealed frozen meals, aka “sous vide” available for most recipes. (Please check “extras” section for more detail) We offer a 15amp electrical connection, access to clean running water, and access to our 4 acre back pasture. And if you prefer a more luxurious camping experience, we offer a BnB experience in our amazing rooftop tent!! This package includes exclusive use of the entire campsite, as well as a catered meal for two! We feature unparalleled views of the sunrise over the mountains, as well as convenient access to the park and Lincoln National Forest, White Sands National Monument, BLM off-road parklands, and nearby Alamogordo. Firewood available onsite for friendly prices (provided there isn't a current burn ban). **Be among the first to experience the most luxurious tent camping in our SmittyBilt Overlander Gen. 2 XL rooftop tent! Crisp, freshly sanitized linens, soft fleece or cotton blankets available. (Please note rental is *only* for the rooftop tent. Jeep rental is not available). For warmer months, we provide Air Conditioning for the rooftop tent at no extra cost! Additional onsite and backcountry packages are available, including fully-catered backcountry excursions in the Lincoln National Forest, wildlife spotting tours, photo tours, and even backcountry drive-in movies are available! Campfire setup, breakfast and omelette bar also available. ***Please note we do not yet have a handwashing sink but provide a spigot or water hose.Our mountain view campsite is located inside a converted antique steel corral. It is situated at the back of our land and is accessible by a separate entrance. Privacy screen is provided on the back side of the campsite, leaving an unobstructed view east towards the beautiful mountains of the Lincoln National Forest. The sunrise over the mountains is spectacular most mornings (see pics) and the stargazing at night is amazing! Your host, Chef Üdø, is happy to have dinner or lunch waiting for you when you arrive! While you can see our neighbors houses off in the distance, we only rent two campsites on our land at a time, so you will have privacy from other campers. ***We are especially happy to welcome Veterans, motorcycles, and tree-hugging Hippies :D. This is a playa sand field. Almost perfectly level. **BE ADVISED this sand becomes very sticky during heavy rains. Not sure there’s a huge risk of getting stuck; albeit it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the weather. Host has some recovery equipment…winch, traction skids, tow ropes, etc., but Host makes no guarantees recovery will be possible.

On leash. We LOVE DOGS HERE!!! However, be advised. This is the desert. All manner of critters live here. Scorpions, snakes, tarantulas, black widow spiders, etc. Host also has dogs. All dogs must be on leash at all times. Please pick up after your dog. Poop bags will be provided.

***Fires are usually restricted here due to county-wide burn bans. Sustainably sourced Firewood available for purchase for friendly prices (cheaper than anywhere in town per-stick prices)

Potable water available

Spigot, hose. We have a well onsite. This is not a reverse osmosis filtration system. However we use the water for showering and washing dishes and haven’t had any problems. Water is “safe” for drinking, however I’ve heard from longtime residents is that it’s best to do some tertiary filtration on this well water before drinking or using for cooking.

Bins available

Trash bin. Pack out your trash please. That said, on a case by case basis, might assist and dispose of some trash for you.

Wifi available

Not sure how strong the signal will be at the campsite, but closer to the Host’s house, the WiFi should be strong enough. We have a Guest login available onsite.

No running water at campsite yet, but solar heated shower is available. Free showers every day if you want!

Chef Udo is your camp host and is happy to help provide hot meals or cooking tools. We can also provide a camp stove, propane, utensils, and a prep table.

**When it rains, the desert floor becomes very sticky. While the risk of getting “stuck” is very low, be prepared if it’s rains. Chef Udo has a 4x4, winch, recovery ropes and skids, and is happy to help. We make no guarantees of recovery, and do not assume liability for any potential snafus.

Smoked/Seared Tomahawk Ribeyegood

A truly unique culinary experience! Chef Üdø works with a local butcher to special order and inspect each tomahawk ribeye for perfect marbling and texture. Your steak is lovingly aged for a couple days over rock salt, the rubbed with secret buttery blend and smoked for ~6 hours. Just before serving, the steak is seared with a literal propane flame thrower (3000*F) to perfect medium rare. Served with fresh garlic/sherry sautéed mushrooms, crispy salted roasted potato, and salad. Shrimp scampi available on request for no extra charge. Dessert included.

The mountain and sunset views are exquisite. Very close to White Sands which was our destination. The bathroom was very well designed, comfortable and clean. Udo is an amazing chef, he makes gourmet meals with unique ingredients, full of flavor. I recommend the meals with the camping experience. He really cares about the full experience and his guests!

A Must-Visit! And a Must-Order!

If you are traveling in this area, you simply MUST stay with Chef Udo!! This may have been the most welcoming and hospitable hipcamp I have ever stayed at!! We ordered steak and baked potatoes which were quite literally the best we had ever tasted, with lots of options and HOME-MADE cheese! The ground was soft and easy to sleep on, and the location was easy to find, along with a really easily reachable camp host makes visiting this spot a no-brainer!

My family and I had a great time camping on Chęf-Üdø’s property. He was very accommodating and personable. The mountain views were an added bonus. You MUST add his cooking options to your trip—it’s absolutely incredible food that we won’t forget. We really appreciate him and highly recommend this Hipcamp!

If you're going within 100 miles of this place, you should detour. OMG. Chef Üdø’s FOOD. He was incredibly nice and helpful and friendly in a way that didn't crowd, the land was quiet with a beautiful night sky, he had potable water that was easy to access, and his composting toilet was the cleanest and least stinky I've experienced in 6 months of lots of different composting toilets, but all of that paled compared to THE FOOD. I had his vegetarian tacos, chocolate cake, and snickerdoodles, and all three were divine. I've never had tacos with the ingredients he used and I'll think about them forever. The chocolate cake had me stopping just short of licking the tin foil. And my partner and I agreed that we should probably not tell either of our moms about the snickerdoodles, as they both have recipes they're proud of for them. Can't recommend a stay here highly enough!

Chef Udo is a plethora of knowledge with cooking skills to match. He and his family went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and safe. Working while traveling also has an added element so rest assured, Verizon gave me enough bars to download work files without too much delay no matter where on the property you end up setting up. I booked at the last minute which meant no brine chicken but after a chat he came up with several options that would be feasible and it did disappoint! A home cooked meal while driving cross country topped any expectations. After a long day of travel this place, the view, the people and the food have made it one of my all time favorite hip camps. As a single woman traveling I would absolutely recommend for anyone, especially the brave women solo travelers. Do yourself a favor and order some food too.

I like to think I’m easy going minimalist - this was definitely the spot for me! I did the Bataan death march and tent camped - the weather was so nice 3 nights I did air mattress in back of pickup. Chef-Udo was very friendly. He gave me the lay of the land and cooked some amazing meals. He even made suggestions for me when I had time. Actually suggested fishing in Lincoln National forest and I caught some and he fried them up for me. What a blast.

There was a record dust storm on our way and so the road was blocked and we could not end up staying there, but chef Udo was very understanding and helpful letting us know what the dangers were. Can’t imagine anyone being more helpful in the lousy conditions we found ourselves. Are they recommend the person.

Plenty of space! Able to be private even with multiple groups. Primitive but with a great composting toilet set up, much nicer than most primitive sites I’ve been to. The real seller here is Chef Udo. He is so personable! He gave amazing recommendations on what to do and see in the area. And let me tell you, the food was divine! He smoked and seared a steak with potatoes and veggies. It was heaven! Cannot recommend this site and the food enough!! Udo is one of a kind

Incredible first Hipcamp experience

This was my first Hipcamp experience! It's going to be tough to beat. Chef Udo's property is just as described. Very primitive. However, there wasn't any dust. I positioned my RV so I was facing the mountains. It was an incredible view during sunset. The best part, as others have mentioned, is the food! I ordered the green chili brisket enchiladas with chocolate cake. The enchiladas were to die for. If I was smart, I would've shown up with an empty fridge and loaded it up with more food! Location was perfect. Only 3 miles from Oliver Lee State Park. If I'm ever back in the area, I will definitely stay again!

Chef Udo was a fantastic host! I stayed on a cold night and was able to get an extension cord run out to my car for my heated blanket. Chef Udo offered great food, great conversation, and great recommendations for things to do and see in the area. If I'm ever back in the area, I would love to stay again.

We arrived at Chef Udo’s property on a particularly windy night, for which we were a bit unprepared. To stay at Chef Udo’s Hipcamp is to be provided with all of the nurturance needed to feel at home. I have yet to visit a Hipcamp with such a genuine, compassionate, gentle, well-humored, talented, and kind host as Udo. His food was incredible and we will be talking about his gumbo for years to come (though hopefully it won’t take us that long to return)! Chef Udo repeatedly went above and beyond to ensure that our trip was special, even after our stay at his property ended. Every unplanned possibility for stress that came our way, he was there to support us. Do yourself a favor and take the time to get to know him, even just a little bit, and you’ll find a spectacular human who is knowledgeable about the natural wonders of the area and about life itself. Thank you, Udo, from the bottom of our hearts. You have made our whole trip something we will never forget, and have made a lasting impression in our lives!

There are not enough positive adjectives to describe how fabulous Chef's food is. Such a treat to find at a hipcamp site. You are crazy to not order food when staying here. Great friendly host with a beautiful open desert place that he is willing to share with others. The location is good for local surrounding points of interest like White Sands and the pistachio farms. Will stay again if in the area to explore more and feast on whatever Chef is cooking up.

Absolutely phenomenal stay! Cannot recommend Chef Udo enough. The views are spectacular but host Chef Udo goes above and beyond. From the moment of my booking he was communicative about dietary options, sites to see, hikes and more. Upon arrival I had the best convo with him followed by the best meal of my entire trip! Add on all the add ons. Do it! I’m currently trying to put together a group of friends to visit again just for the food.

Chef Udo’s land is absolutely stunning. It was the perfect peaceful spot for a quick overnight stay in our camper van. But, what truly sets this place apart is the incredible experience Chef Udo provides. If you’re staying here, do yourself a favor and order food from him. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience. We had a bit of a chaotic day due to a pet medical emergency, which meant arriving at camp much later than expected. Chef Udo went above and beyond to accommodate us, seamlessly adjusting our planned dinner into a brunch the next morning. And wow, what a brunch it was. The tomahawk ribeye—smoked for six hours and finished with a perfect flame sear—was beyond anything we’ve ever tasted. And the enchiladas? Chef’s kiss. That meal turned our trip around, helping us leave the stress of the previous day behind. Chef Udo’s kindness and culinary talent are unmatched, and we’re so grateful to have found this gem of a place. If you’re passing through, don’t miss the chance to experience it for yourself!

Chef Üdø’s campsite & dinner offering was a wonderful, unexpected surprise on a recent long distance road trip. The location was prime for a trip to White Sands National Park but the real highlight was Chef Üdø himself & the incredible meal he served us - triple seared & whiskey soaked sirloin burgers with fresh steamed vegetables (as requested) finished with a decadent, homemade vegan chocolate ganache cake. In the morning Chef prepared dairy-free coconut pancakes & scrumptious, blackberry maple syrup served alongside delicious Colombian coffee. Chef Üdø’s care & warm hospitality is truly special & rare. We are very blessed to have stumbled across him on Hipcamp & would love to pay him another visit in the future for one of his tours of White Sands! Thanks again Chef!

A Unique Experience

If you would like a delicious, informal meal prepared by a charasmatic chef served to you under the stars...then this is the place for you. How wonderful to have food prepared and delivered to your campsite after a long day on the road. Chef -Udo is very kind and generous host...and entertaining as well! The view of the mountains is spectaclar. One of our most memorable nights on our trip to New Mexico. Thank you Chef!

Wish we stayed longer! A total gem

We totally loved camping on Chef-Üdø’s land! You should definitely go for his lasagna and pancakes, and his rosemary bread is a perfect addition to anything. One of the best meals in our entire lives. Moreover, he was very welcoming, very helpful with recommendations and simply nice to talk to. Recommended experience 10/10!

Chef Udo was incredible!! We ordered nachos ahead of time and upon arrival decided to order calzones as well. It was very windy so he invited us to his backyard to eat the nachos and calzones. He even gave us complimentary ice tea and homemade truffles. He was so kind and we had such a great time! Would love to visit again!
