The IR-GUN-S non-contact infrared thermometer is your best deal in a basic infrared temperature gun. IR-GUN-S Infrared Thermometer is designed for broad general purpose use in research, industrial applications, HVAC, construction, repair or maintenance services, and even around the house if you're technically inclined.

Compare

Use this versatile IR thermal sensor to read surface temperatures from a distance - instantly. IR-GUN-S has a quality lens and machined baffles to ensure accuracy with a 12:1 distance-to-target spot ratio. At 12" you can measure a 1" spot diameter. And, the thermometer gun's bright pointing laser helps you aim.

IR-GUN-S includes an adjustable emissivity so you can set the IR thermal sensor to read a variety of different surface materials. Operation is simple. Pull the trigger on the IR-GUN-S to instantly read the surface temperature you're pointing at. Let go of the trigger and the reading will stay on "Hold" for several seconds so you can take note of it. While the infrared thermometer's trigger is depressed, you can also scan looking for MAX/MIN temperatures as you move the temperature laser gun across a larger target. IR-GUN-S is a useful thermometer to help find hot or cold spots in walls, insulation, heated objects or larger areas. Other features include an averaging function and a differential mode. High and low alarms are easily set so IR-GUN-S will beep for readings below or above your preset thresholds.

The main display of the infrared thermometer is big enough to read and it's backlit for easy viewing anytime. Batteries are included and replacements can be found anywhere (2xAAA). Order the optional holster to protect the IR-GUN-S between uses. This is a hiqh-quality, professional infrared thermometer that will surprise you at this price.

Working great for home Coffee Roasting!
Older "workshop grade" IR gun wasn't working well for my new pursuit, home coffee roasting. This is working well, yielding quicker, more consistent readings. Haven't played with the emissivity setting yet, to see if the default is the proper setting. The push-button switch for C/F is very handy.

Accurate When Calibrated Correctly
This thermometer was purchased to help me to gauge the temperature of stainless steel cookware. The unit is easy to use and the display is very readable. However, the accuracy of the unit is difficult to assess due to the emissivity setting. If you get that wrong, the readout might be off by 15% or more. Emissivity of different surfaces causes a wide swing of IR, so it pays to calibrate by comparing the IR reading to a known value.

Industrial IR Gun is a game changer for consistant searing
Love it. By measuring the grill surface, we can now get the sear on our steaks consistent every time.
Cooking fish is a treat. Check the surface temp of pan to get great colour without burning the butter.
Stir-fry
Pan Fried Chicken
Use it every day.

Why did you choose this?

I picked this item because we have used other ThermoWorks thermometers and they work well. We have used the same one now for many years.

Serious eats recommendation

need to check the temp on our gas grill...this seems like a great choice based on reviews

I have Thermapens and love them

Where are these unit manufactured ?
Are any of your units safe to take body temps on the foreheads of people?

Please read about infrared thermometers and COVID-19 temperature screening here: https://www.thermoworks.com/covid-19-screening

Would this unit work well for taking tire temperatures let’s say on each edge of the tire and in the center?

An IR thermometer will only give accurate data on tire temperatures if it can be used while the car is in motion because the tire surface cools rapidly when the car has stopped. It could probably still tell you if there is a difference in temperature across the tire tread, but a probe type thermometer with a fine tip and a rapid response is what the pros use.

Can this be used to check a child's skin temp?

Do not point this type of thermometer at people or animals, especially at eyes.

Can you check temps of your smoker coal bed ? Or firepit coals?

Yes, you can.

What are the dimensions of the IR-Gun-S and how much does it weight?

The IR-GUN-S dimensions are 8.5x4.5x2.5 . It weighs 0.6 lb.

What’s the difference with this compared to the circle laser one?

The main difference between the IR-GUN-S and the IRK-2 IR guns is that IRK-2 has an external probe plug that is compatible with our Type-K probes and is a little more accurate than our IR-GUN-S. Both of these have the same optics ratio of 12:1, and have a range up to 1022°F.

You can find all this information under the "Specs" section of all 3 product listings below:

https://www.thermoworks.com/IR-Gun
https://www.thermoworks.com/IRK-2

• For simple features and reliable accuracy, we recommend IR-GUN-S.
• For higher accuracy with an external probe port, we recommend IRK-2.

How accurate is and can this gun check the temp of fry oil?

An infrared gun (such as the IR-GUN-S) will only measure the surface temperature of the oil. In order to know what the internal temperature of a vat of fry oil is, you will either need to keep the oil stirred so the oil is the same temperature throughout (hard) or use a probe thermometer to measure the internal temperature (easier).

Accuracy*
55 to 95°F: ±2.7°F (±1.5°C);
32 to 1022°F (0 to 550°C):
Greater of 4°F (2°C) or ±2% of reading; -76 to 32°F (-60 to 0°C):
±4°F+0.09°F (2°C+0.05°C)

*IR accuracy can be affected by the emissivity setting, target spot size, and rapid changes in ambient temperature. Accuracy specification based on ambient temperature of 77°F ±2°F (25°C ±1°C).

Can this thermometer be connected to the computer with a USB to collect data?

No, it cannot.

Can this be used to take the temperature of food when it comes out of the freeze dryer?

You can, but you need to keep in mind that an infrared gun only measures surface temperatures. If you put the food in a bowl and used the infrared gun, you would get the surface temperature of the freeze dried food at the top of the bowel. However, if you laid the freeze dried food out on a tray, you would end up getting the temperature of the tray, because the infrared takes the temperatures of an entire circle. This particular infrared gun takes the temperature of a 1 inch circle when you hold it 12 inches away from the area you are measuring.
