Grippy but laces broke
These shoes have been overall great - until one of the laces broke. 5-year-old son was easily able to figure out how to tighten the unique laces, but I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't last longer before he outgrew them. It's a pity the technology isn't more robust, since replacing the laces isn't easy. The leather "eyes" that hold the laces are also starting to tear slowly.
Great Help in Footwear
The hiking/running shoe was for a child. We have previous experience with this Salomon brand, so I'd just like to comment about the really great service we received from REI footwear staff ... well, everyone in the store I guess. We purchased the shoe without fitting, as a gift. Sure enough, it was too big. Brought the shoe back and was happily accepted then went into footwear and received really friendly and helpful advice from staff. Thanks for the help. The family will be back for other adventure equipment.
Comfortable and sturdy
I bought these hiking shoes for my daughter very last minute and was worried about her not having enough time to break them in before our trip, but they were perfect. Very comfortable and sturdy. She didn't complain about her feet hurting once (a record) the whole trip. She also walked a little in the river and never mentioned her feet being wet and no blisters despite getting the shoes the day before our trip. The tread on the bottom were great for scrambling up and down the trails and in the river.

Very light and great cushion for my little girl's feet. She was able to use this to hike up Kwaay Paay Peak. The ease of securing the shoelaces sold us, since she's struggling with tying on her own. Money well spent on this.
Last a long time
My son is on his fifth sequential size in these shoes. They last a long time, provide good support and no complaints about comfort. Great for hiking. We buy a new pair each year during the member sale. Only complaint - the cinch down clasp has broken twice. We just put laces in and problem solved. Shoe still had plenty of life left even though the cinch closure broke.
Falling apart
These are the only walking shoes that my daughter wants to wear. She says they’re the most comfortable shoes ever. After her first pair fell apart after only a few months, I really did not want to buy the same pair. She begged for the same shoe. I thought/hoped that maybe it was a fluke, so I tried again. We bought this pair in April. That was three months ago. They’re also falling apart. It’s super disappointing as I’m all about paying a higher price for a longer lasting, higher quality product. These shoes don’t make the mark.
This shoes took my kid to the summit
My 7 year old hiked for 7hrs and 3000 vertical feet with no complains in his feet. That should said it all
Both laces broke and uppers falling apart
We've had these shoes for one month. My 10-year-old son loves them and they fit him well. Unfortunately we've had many problems: one lace broke within a few days, and the other lace broke a few weeks later. Finally, the uppers on one of the shoes are falling apart after just a month of use.
It's been under 6months and they're falling apart.
So comfortable, but quality...
Excellent Kid’s Hiking Shoe
Bought these for my son and am very impressed so far. We spend weeks in the sierras every summer, hiking and adventuring every day. These have held up really well! Love that they have no laces, which makes them easier for him to put on himself and there is nothing to come loose while running around. Also very easy to dry (there is a lot of water and muck this year!). Great tread as well - they rarely slipped on the snow. We buy new hiking kicks every summer - will definitely look for them again next year! We did size up a entire size - would have sized up a half size, but no half sizes in this shoe.
