A Dog's Best Friend: The Ultimate Hiking Buddy

Let me start this review by saying: if dogs could write reviews, this pack would get a standing ovation...or should I say a standing tail-wag? But since they can't, I'm here to do it justice. So, picture this: you're gearing up for a day of hiking, and your furry friend is bouncing off the walls with excitement. You strap on your REI Co-op Packmod Hip Pack, and suddenly, you're both ready to conquer the trails like a dynamic duo. But hey, this pack isn't just for hiking; it's a versatile sidekick for all your adventures, including those strolls with your pup. Let's talk features, shall we? First off, the design is genius. It's meant to be worn in the back, but let's be rebels for a moment; why not flip it around and wear it in the front? You'll have instant access to your gear without having to perform any ninja moves. Plus, it's as easy to pivot around your waist or across your chest to easily pick that snack to pack for the trip (hint: bring extra for your furry friend). Now, onto the durable water-repellent finish. Translation: it's like your pack is wearing a raincoat. No soggy snacks or damp socks here, folks even with the dog bowl is clipped to the side. And with the bucket-style, top-loading opening and double-slider zipper, accessing your trail essentials is as smooth as butter. But wait, there's more! Need hydration? No problemo. The stretch pocket on the side can securely hold your water bottle, and the bottle security cord will make sure it stays put, even when your pup decides it's time for a sprint. My only warning is to pick a smaller-sized bottle closer to 4-8 oz. Let's not forget about the stash pockets – because who doesn't love a good hiding spot for their valuables? And the zippered side pocket? Perfect for those items you need to grab in a jiffy, like treats for your dog's impromptu photo shoot but also to store those car keys. It's practical, it's versatile, and most importantly, it's dog-approved. So grab your pack, leash up your pup, and get ready for some unforgettable adventures. Trust me, you won't regret it. 🐾

Liked the old model better.. This one eliminated one of the side bottle holders and the front pocket. Seems bulkier but doesn’t hold as much as the old one! Guess that’s “progress”??

Great adaptable hip pack.

This is a great hip pack. The belt fits well and is easily adjustable straps that stay snug through movement. There are bands to keep the extra strap out of the way. It has a comfortable mesh lining to keep heat from building up between you and the pack and it is well padded to protect your skin from rubbing what ever is in the pack. Everything seems quality. The water bottle pocket holder could be deeper to help balance the water better but with an extended bottle was still held in well with the elastic cord. The webbing stitched to the outside along with the straps on the bottom were great to hold jackets or trekking poles when not needed.

Well made, strong waist pack, but needs work

I used this waist pack for a recent trip to NYC. The pack was easy to use as both a waist or across the chest bag. It has nice padding on the back side and think straps, making it more comfortable with heavy items. However, the two side pockets were not very useful, and the larger main pocket unzips at an odd angle whick led to things falling out. It's well made and I love the green color, yet the storage space was a bit lacking.

Much more than I expected!

This is the perfect pack for a little day hike. It sits easy on the waist, but holds far more than it looks like it would! I really appreciate the thought that went into the pockets that it has - more than many waist packs of this size, but none of them are superfluous. Normally I am not a fan of bottle pockets since I drink a ton of water and most of the time they just can't accommodate the size of the bottle I carry, but this one is deep and stretchy enough to securely hold both my travel mug and my 40 oz vacuum insulated stainless daily carry bottle! I got this thinking that it would just be a nice pack to use around town, but after putting it through its paces I've realized that it's much more capable than I anticipated, and it'll be coming out on the trail with me in the future. Great job, REI!

My Second REI Waist Pack--Another Keeper!

I am one of those people who carries a waist pack pretty much wherever I go. Doesn't put me in the cool category but I don't give a hoot, I find them practical. The ones I typically use are small, just large enough to keep my point and shoot camera and a credit card. I've tried a few larger ones and was underwhelmed by them, mostly due to carry comfort. This I was rather suspicious when I received the REI's Trail 5 Waist Pack. Looking at the outside, I immediately noticed the attachment points. I'm not someone who attaches a lot of the things on the outside of my packs, with one exception: I carry a Garmin Tempe probe, which adds ambient temperature to my GPS track. I've added some attachment points to many of the fanny packs I've used, just for that purpose. no need to go DIY with the Trail 5! Also nice to have is a pouch for water on the right and a small zipped accessory pouch on the left. I checked if my Olympus TG-6 fit, it does! The belt is nice, wide and sturdy; I dislike waist packs that come with 1" or narrower. One thing I would love is for the belt to go through the entire pack. If that was the case, I could see using it for skijoring. The main compartment has a two-way zipper, which I find mandatory. Its large size made me curious if my Nikon Z 6ii mirrorless with kit lens would fit, and it does. I'm not planning to carry my large camera in this pack every day, but it's nice to know that I could in a pinch. There is an zippered mesh compartment inside the lid and two open pockets along the back. I wish the one on the left was just a tad wider because I can't slip in my mobile. Between the main compartment and the back padding is another zippered compartment, I had hoped my Kindle would fit in there. Again, just a tad too small. For my first hike with the Trail 5, I decided to load the pack with my Nikon which weighs in at around 1.3 kg. Unlike experiences with larger waist packs I tried before, carry comfort was excellent. The padding helps to make the pack feel comfortable on my back and the belt adjustment stayed put. Since then, I've been carrying the pack almost daily on my 5 km dog walks, no large camera though. It's nice to have a quick spot for the leash for the off-leash segments. I suspect that the carrying the pack in the warm season with be a sweaty affair, but so would any other pack. I'm planning to take the pack on an upcoming trip abroad, to have quick access to travel essentials.

Super functional and multi-use

This bag is very versatile! It's light weight. The pockets are very roomy for a little bag. The contours fit around my waist nicely at any waist position and are comfortable while walking, running, or biking. The bag doesn't usually ride up my waist like other waist packs do. I LOVE the pockets on this. They're well placed. This pack is fantastic for travel because the pockets offer easy, quick yet secure access to necessities like passports, wallets, chapstick, etc... great little pack. The jasper green is a great color too. Pretty true to the color pictured in the listing (maybe slightly darker). The waist strap offers a ton of adjustment and doesn't slip. It would fit up to a 63"-64" waist. Also is an easy switch to an over the shoulder bag if wanted. I give this bag a 4.5 out of 5 only because sometimes the mesh on the back of the bag gets a bit warm.

Disappointing quality, Strap came undone

I was really excited to receive this bag, but unfortunately, my experience has been less than satisfactory. The “bottle security cord” is flimsy and one part of it detached from the bag after 2-3 uses. When it is properly attached to the bag, it does help keep your water bottle from falling out, so without it, the water bottle can fall out of the holder if you are running or a bouncy walker. They should use a stronger, thicker cord and attach it more securely. I’ve used this bag 4-5 times total. I was on a walk, and my bag completely fell off of my waist. When I picked up my bag, I was surprised to see that the strap had completely become disconnected from the bag, and the stitching had completely come undone. Fortunately, I was able to get a zip tie and salvage it so it was “manageable” for the rest of my walk. This is a skinny person problem. I’m on the smaller side with approx 24”-25” waist, and I wear the bag so it is on my backside. The main pocket covers the entire width of my back. So the side pocket and water bottle pocket extend/jut out to the sides, so when I walk or run, my arms hit those pockets. Bc of this I ended up not using the side pocket and angling the bag so the water bottle was fully on my backside. The straps are really long, which is nice for people with larger waists. I like the fact that the main compartment can hold plenty of items, but if the straps won’t stay connected to the bag and on your body, then the bag is basically worthless.

The best hip bag ever

I’ve been using a traditional one-compartment fanny pack for day to day use for years. The REI Trail 5 Waist Pack brilliantly bag solves so many problems I’ve had with typical fanny packs. It has a holder for my coffee cup, a separate, easily reachable compartment for my work badge and/or phone, and several more compartments for everything else. This bag is the perfect mix between minimalist and functional. REI has done it again with a nearly perfect bag design! Only one minor downside are the weirdly long waist straps; if you’re a smaller person you’ll have dangling straps but if you’re handy you can possibly carefully trim down and resew.

Solid Pack for MTB

Purchased this pack for mountain bike rides where taking my Osprey hydration backpack would be overkill. Overall, it’s the perfect size for what I need. Holds my phone, basic tools, basic first aid, bars + energy goo and other essentials. I like how the waist cinch system is designed for on the fly adjustment and the retention straps that keep the loose webbing from flopping around. My only two complaints: 1) I wish the main pocket had more dividers to prevent my tools from bouncing around and 2) could use external compression straps for the same reason.

Very useful at Machu Picchu

Roomy waste pack. Took it to Machu Picchu. Lots of space for map, snacks, sunglasses and more in main compartment. Hidden money zipper towards your body. Side compartment for phone and pocket for small Nalgene. Plus attached bottom strings for rain jacket and foldable hiking stick. Perfect alternative to a backpack. Very useful and roomy! Highly recommended.
