Blows competition out of the water

These days, you can even get cell service in Yosemite Valley--if you're lucky--but I don't like to take any chances. On more than one occasion, I was hiking on a trail and I really needed to get in touch with my family. There was no cell service and the inReach Mini came through for both sending and receiving texts. The inReach Mini has never failed me. It sometimes takes awhile to make a connection, but it never fails. I used to have a different, larger device. It worked, but it was too heavy for backpacking or even a long hike. The inReach Mini is light enough to wear around the neck with a shoestring lanyard. No competing device is light enough to do this. That is the dealbreaker for me. The monthly service charge is a bargain. Because the canned messages can be sent at no additional charge, I never find myself hit with surcharges. I pay less for my service than I would with other devices. I have it activated even during months when I don't go backpacking because when the Big One hits (I live in earthquake country), phones aren't going to work. When I send a text to my family, they get an embedded link to Goggle Maps that shows exactly where I am. I like that. I have mine paired with my iPhone and so it's very easy to use. What about operating it just by itself? No, it's not so easy. It takes some time getting used to, but playing around with it can be fine. Is it worth $50 more to get the Mini 2? Yes. I used to have the Mini, which was great, but the Mini 2 is even better, especially for the longer battery life. I'm very happy with my inReach Mini. Because of the low weight, free pre-set messages, google map links, and low monthly cost, it's far better than anything else on the market.

Device OK- Cost to use not OK

They have jacked up every kind of fee imaginable to actually use this very expensive device. Its not worth it. And they tend to exponentially increase the cost every year. They service is very complicated to opt out of. If you "suspend your service" rather then cancelling your account. You will be charged a $35 dollar fee. If you cancel your service and then restart it at another point you will be charged another $35 dollar fee. That is outrageous for a device this expensive.

Confidence!

I am a 58-year-old widow and was about to go on a journey with my son into the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area of Minnesota. I was concerned about not having service and if there would be an emergency. I bought the Mini and I am so glad I did. Gave us complete confidence to be alone in the wilderness! It’s easy to use. Family could reach us as well and keep track of where we were. Excited to go on my next adventure!

My life is priceless, right?

I've been in the market for an inReach for a while now since I am a new Dad and things are getting serious these days. I am an avid solo hiker, although I tend to only go on 1 to 2 hikes per month here in Orange County, CA. Most times, surprisingly, I do have cell service on my hikes but there are times that I don't, and those are the times that the inReach is crucial. With a growing family, I want to make sure they are informed that I'm okay. That peace of mind is worth the high $400 entry price (plus $35/yr annual fee and $14.95/mo on the Freedom: Safety plan). I love how this new version has USB-C and the new interface is very reminiscent of the "widget glances" on the new Fenix watches.

A must have

I don’t know what I would’ve done without this device. I was recently lamenting the $14.95 subscription fee, for something I wasn’t using. But boy am I glad I had it with me today. My dog got stuck in a coyote trap a mile away from my car. My phone only had enough charge for me to get one text through. I couldn’t leave him because when I tried, to he would flip out and try to chew his foot off. This was the first time I used it and I didn’t know what I was doing but I figured it out. They called emergency services for me and also my emergency contact. I was never so glad to see help arrive. If you’ve been on the fence about buying this, don’t hesitate it was a lifesaver today for me and my dog. it works like a charm.

Great battery life, functions well.

Recently used the Garmin inReach Mini 2 on a 7 day backpacking trek in the northern Yosemite wilderness. I kept it on during the day, sent 2–3 preset check-in messages per day, and turned it off overnight (and kept it in my sleeping bag). After 6 nights/7 days like this, I still had 40% battery life left. Messages usually took about a minute to send with no/minimal tree cover; the bluetooth-connected phone app makes typing messages from your phone very easy. I'm so glad I had it with me to get info about the Washburn fire that started while I was on the trail. Overall, I (and my loved ones back home!) am very happy with how the Garmin performed.

Great features

The inreach mini is easy to use and apps are intuitive. Some of the settings are hard to find in the apps. I used it for the first time for scout summer camp. I was able to share location link with password using map share feature. This really helped the new parents sending their 11 year old kids off to camp for a week.

Facilitated My Rescue!

Bought the InReach Mini before my section hike through the Sonoran Desert on the AZT. On day 4 of the hike, I slipped on loose rock and tore my hamstring. I was four miles from the trailhead in a remote area without cell service and could not walk. I pressed the SOS button. Within 45 minutes, Garmen had the Sheriff's Department's Search & Rescue helicopter there. Garmen communicated with me and the Search & Rescue Team throughout the entire process. Incredible device and even more incredible people!

Peace of Mind

Bought this for my 18yo before he headed out on the AT. He was able to update his location daily and let us know he was ok when he did not have cell service. Best part: when he was ready to be picked up, he dropped a GPS location that we were able to easily navigate to using google/Apple Maps. It was great knowing that regardless of the situation he would be able to get help.

Pairing with phone is not always available

The device works as advertised, however a little side note to consider. If you are pairing the device with your phone it can only be paired while your phone has active cell coverage. When you can pair the devices, the system works great. I get back to camp later and the camp has no cell service. You can't power off your cell or the inreach to save battery, because in the morning you won't be able to pair them again, until you get cell service. Yes, the inreach doesn't require it to be paired to work, but it sure makes it nicer to send texts from the app rather than typing on the inreach device. The phone has a better screen to see the days track log too.

Garmin is money hungry watch out

Do not do business with Garmin. I bought a garmin to use occasionally and my card was hacked, so it was cancelled, and Garmin went crazy charging me $100 "agency" fee to collect $14 I owed due to the cancelled credit card. Mind you they did this within 30 days of my card being deactivated. Super aggressive with sending people to collections over hardly any expense. What a joke. Long story short, find a different company to do business with. These guys are hungry for money and will do whatever it takes to get their money.

Fantastic satellite device!

I was a little uncertain if we should spend the money on a satellite device, but decided to go for it. It is costly, and there's a subscription service you need to make it work. But in my opinion, it was 100% worth it. This gadget works along with a smartphone app, and with the app I was able to text family, track my own location and send my location to others. It worked perfectly in the Colorado wilderness, and I don't think I'll ever do another backcountry adventure without it. If you're trying to avoid carrying a cellphone at the same time, I'd probably opt for a larger device, as this one really needs the smartphone app. But it worked perfectly and I highly recommend!
