Great Peace of Mind
I’ve had my ResQLink for about a year and it’s been great! While I haven’t had to use it for real, it’s super straightforward and also very easy to test the battery. I keep it in a pocket in my pack and have never had an issue with it accidentally going off. It’s very nice that you don’t need to worry about keeping it charged or having to pay a monthly subscription.
Poorly Designed
On my 2nd day of hiking with this, completely unbeknownst to me, the device, while still in my daypack and with the antenna and cover both secured, started to transmit a signal which triggered a Search and Rescue effort for me. Only when the County Sheriff showed up at my cabin (turns out the SAR folks got my cabin location from my Emergency Contact registered with NOAA) after I returned from my hike did I have a clue. I took the PLB out of my daypack to show to him and it was not flashing or displaying anything and it was still secured. So we thought it must be someone else's beacon going off. Only when I got back somewhere with cell service the next day did I indeed find out that it was my beacon that had gone off and my loved ones were all worried sick about me. I also found out that it had only located me within a 40 mile radius or circumference (I suppose because the antenna was still secured). When I called ACR about this they couldn't or wouldn't offer me any information about how this could happen or provide a solution other than pay to ship it to them and they would examine it and provide a response. At that point I gave up and returned it to REI. I don't know how common this problem is, but it is unacceptable to have it randomly trigger a SAR. It did this without any indication to me that it was transmitting a rescue signal (that I could tell). I will also say, which was not clear from the product information that ACR provides, the view screen does not display one's coordinates or any other information (except presumably during a true emergency where you request a SAR),
Defective False Alarm From Test Mode
Exactly what was said from Review by DissipointedinREI in San Jose from Aug 2020, 4 month back. First time I did self test worked fine when new purchased. Around 3 months later I tested again and it said on display 406 SENT. I got voice mail messages from Coast Guard and AirForce checking if I was alright. I told them I was alright and the PLB malfunctioned. They both said they call off the alert. I could not shut it off. I later returned it to REI for under 90 day refund. OK, now I know it was not just me. Though ACR is the mfr, REI is authorized reseller per ACR. Not sure if there are small waterproof PLB by other mfrs that I can find. VHF marine hand held radio I still have may be till I can find something else, or maybe the ACR Electronics ResQLink 400 Buoyant Personal Locator Beacon if I feel lucky?
Strange review below.
I have an older, non-buoyant, non-waterproof ACR PLB. Now that it needs a new battery, I'm thinking of trying this model, because it's buoyant and waterproof. I have not bought this, so I have not received the directions in the box. But, I don't know why "DissapointedinREI" said there is no manual for this on the "site". I found the manual on the ACR website. Not sure why he/she said the directions say to Self-Test using the On/Off button. The manual says to use the "T" Test button, which definitely makes more sense. The manual says to "activate" using the on/Off button, which would be to request SAR. Bummer, though, to hear that two other people reported false activations. Wish I could remove my "recommendation" and "energy efficiency" ratings in this review, because I clicked then before realizing they are not not required, and now I can't remove them.
Good to have but why the antenna design change?
I purchased this in January 2024 and hope to never have to use it. And hope it works if I do. :) This is my third ACR PLB over the past 15 years, replacing them every 5 years. My two previous versions are model PLB-375 which have been superseded by newer models, which includes the newer "ResQLink View" that I just purchased. The reason for 4 stars: it seems to me that ACR has cheaped-out on the antenna restraint design in the newer models. The old PLB-375 had a very robust and simple restraint design that virtually guarantees that the antenna will never "deploy" unless you do it intentionally. The newer models no longer have such a robust restraint, in fact, when I opened the box the antenna was "loose" and ready to deploy. Why is this a concern? 1. If you carry this in your backpack and the antenna comes loose and shifts, then there is nothing that will stop a potential false ALERT getting triggered by powering on the unit. And what if the antenna gets damaged because it unexpectedly came loose? 2. The antenna itself feels like it is of the same construction as on the older PLB-375 units, however the mechanism that allows it to rotate feels inferior / loose / cheap on this newer unit. Maybe the costs that went into the plastic belt clip is why decided to cheap out on the antenna. Ridiculous if this is the reason. Finally, my unit was manufactured in March 2023, but it came with a battery expiration date of April 2029, so more than 5 years in the future as of January 2024. This is good and probably reduces people from returning units that have sat on the shelf for a long time, eating into the recommended 5 year battery life. Apparently the battery is replaceable on the newer units but have to be sent to an official center; not sure if I would do that or just buy a new unit come 2029 (maybe StarLink or other technology will change how PLB emergency communications is transmitted years from now).
must have for offshore trips
this is simply a must have for faraway excursions.
No problems so far.
I have had one of these, or one like it, not sure the exact model, and it has sat silently in my pack with no problems. Does it work if needed? I hope so but then again I hope to never need it. But nice to know I have it. The battery will need changing soon.
