Super Salomons!!

69 year old hiker/backpacker, put boots on every continent except for Antarctica. Have worn many styles and brands of hiking boots over the years from Keens, Merrells, Vasques, etc. Second pair of Salomon X ultra boots. Fit was perfect, super lightweight, very durable. Great boots, will stay with Salomon.

Didn't even last half a season

I'm a long time wear of Salomon Ultra 3's and didn't think twice when I saw the newer version late last year. I got them after hiking here in WA wrapped up for the year and now after maybe 120 miles they have disintegrated. Stitching in several places on both boots and just a complete fabric failure in the toe box. Both shoes have not held up and obviously are no where close to water proof anymore. Super disappointing, I guess it is back to the old version of me assuming I can find them.

One season and trash

I love these shoes, they are comfortable and fit me perfectly. However after less that one year they are literally falling apart. Such a poor quality for such a big brand.

Worst Ultra Mid GTX's yet!

I've owned numerous pairs of the Ultra Mid's since 2014, these are by far the worst yet. I've owned them since Feb, they got some use from late Feb - late Jun 2021 and then a bit of use recently, they've probably only had around 400-500km's in them with isn't a great deal of use. The materials on the upper on the toe box has worn through, the next layer has worn through and so has the GTX membrane, the tread on the soles has worn out in a few places. This is the 4th version, you'd have thought by now they'd be getting better each time they bring them out, not in this case - they're not fit for purpose! My old Ultra 3 mid GTX's have seen over 2 years of use and a couple of thousand km's, they are a bit tatty and I use them for gardening and they do let a bit of water in the toe area - but they haven't gone to the extent of the new 4's. I'm not impressed at all, I certainly would not recommend these to anyone. The only saving grace for these has been the fit, I had to go up to a 12 in the Ultra 3 mids, at least I could get in a UK 11 and the fit was great in the wide fitting, they were pretty light, not bad grip - but boots at this price should at least last way longer than this. I'm very unlikely to buy any further Ultra's in the future.

Incredibly comfortable and lightweight.

This is my first pair of Salomans I have ever purchased. They were always too narrow for me. When I saw the Ultra 4 Mid came out in a wide, I bought it. I have never looked back. I even bought a replacement pair 3 months after this purchase (they were on sale). When I first purchased these I also bought Hoka Kaha 2. I hiked a couple of weekends in both and chose the Salomons (the Hokas were a little too bulky). They offer incredible support, especially given their light weight. I've taken some quick, errant step into creeks and came out with a totally dry foot (this really impressed me). I have well over 600 miles in these and the soles are a little worn (see pics). My walking is 50% wooded forest and 50% concrete sidewalk/asphalt street. I felt I didn't get quite the "sole life" I would have wanted.

Very comfortable, just do not last.

Basically these are a trainer made to look like a walking shoe, albeit a mid. Very comfortable and lightweight, I can easily walk miles in them on general terrain. I wouldn’t expect these to do anything technical as they basically a trainer in structure with ankle support. The downside is the sole outer was worn smooth just inside 12 months and most use has been fields, far too soft. And now the toe box outer has started to spilt open left to right, material failure on both. If it wasn’t for the comfort these would be a 0-1 star. Very comfortable just not built to last which isn’t good for the price you’re paying.

Pretty fast and light but needs more durability

I got a pair of these and they helped me finish many day hikes, they did ok in both wet and dry conditions, and they feel much faster and more breathable than my other hiking boots, I would hope there was a bit more cushioning on the sole though. After using them for about 20 days, the durability is kind of letting me down, waterproofing is close to totally failing, dwr doesn’t totally worn out, the outer sole is also wearing out and loosing some small pieces which happened a bit sooner than I expected, and finally one of my shoelaces are some how close to breaking like it’s been cut half way through. Curious how I can get a replacement for the shoelaces since I have not found one on the website.

Great, but not perfect

I just finished a 20-mile day hike yesterday, and these did great! I've only had them for a month and maybe put 5 miles on them to break them in, but that proved to be enough. No blisters! Toe box was a little too small at first, but that issue went away after a few days of wear. Haven't had a chance to test the Gore-Tex feature, but I know from prior experience to trust anything Gore-Tex. My only complaint is the black tab on the outside is fairly uncomfortable and hard against the outside middle part of my foot, and there is no way to mitigate this issue since it also serves as a loop for the laces. Would I buy these again? Eeehhhhh, probably not. I think there are better boots here, but I am happy with them.

First time hiker

Being a runner and having used all sort of running shoes , I found my search land on this shoe. At first I was apprehensive about the harder sole compared to big cushion running shoes I am coming from but, the grorilla grip and comparatively lighter weight in its category of shoes, this one has easily become one of my favorite shoe to grab for not just hiking and dog walks but shopping and visiting friends too. One does feel big gravels under the shoe but the tactical look is unmatched with any other hiking boot. @ 45 days of rugged use , it’s looking like it will last atleast few years . I even tried running in these and didn’t feel extra weight of them. So I recommend this for both a new as well as an experienced hiker.

Great on weight, not so great with water

I was excited to receive these shoes for several hikes. They are lightweight, supportive, and the wide size fit my feet, an on going issue for me. Hiking with the shoe felt great, the grip on the sole held in most instances, and the ankle support was sufficient. However upon testing the waterproofing of the goretex shoe I began to question whether I had wasted a bunch of money and time. For the first backpacking hike, the shoes seemed to hold against water. By my second, third and fourth hike, these shoes seemed to take on water just by walking through wet grass. On multi day hikes, I needed to dry my shoes, daily, just to avoid wet feet. In cold areas and hikes, I felt the frigid water penetrate my shoe and then sock immediately. To put in to perspective the situation, I bought these shoes at the end of August ‘24 and it is now October ‘24. I’ve probably walked about 60km in these shoes and they began to leak around 30km. I would suggest that this leak probably happens around the bend point in the shoe where the foot flexes for each step. The stitching has already come undone around that particular area for both shoes. Perhaps Solomon needs to invest in better manufacturing and quality materials to justify the price the charge for these shoes.
