First off, I would like to clear the air about a few things. I noticed a lot of customers complaining about the spot x being slow and unresponsive. I utilize this device almost on a daily basis both in the military and dealing with VSO (Vessel Security Officer) operations. For those who have utilized satellite phone technology, you are aware of the lag in satcomms. For those who have not utilized satellite communications before and are purchasing this for the first time you will notice that it is not like a traditional cell phone in that it takes a little for the message to send through the satellite network and be received on the other end to whomever you are in communications with. It is no different than a satellite phone call. If you have not ever used a satellite phone you will notice that when you speak there's about a two and a half to three second delay and sometimes up to five second delay to hear the other person and vice versa. This is all dependent upon your location on the globe as well as how many satellites that are tracking your current position. Also, it is not like the movies where you see people inside utilizing satellite phone without an outside antenna facing skyward. Most satellite communications will require a line of sight type of signal in order to get communications to and from your intended recipient. As another fellow shopper has said in this day and age of everybody wanting everything immediately it does take a short period of time for your message to be sent, relayed over the satellite network and received by your intended recipient. Give this a try if you're going to be outside of your terrestrial coverage for a normal cell service. if you keep the things in mind that I have put in this review, you will not be disappointed. Everyone have a great week!

Very disappointed. This is the second year hunting in Colorado that I have to used the spot x. I have not have had to use the SOS feature but I will say that the device it's terrible at sending and receiving messages. This is not a reliable messaging device. Keep in mind I am in the Colorado mountains with nothing but Big Sky. And yet messages still seem to take a very long time to send, and most of the time you just get a question Mark and you don't even know if that message even sent. A year later I'm still receiving messages from the year before. I will delete the messages from the thread and magically all the messages will reappear and not even be in the order sent or received. Battery life is terrible even though they claim 10 days , I cannot even get it to last a full day with very limited use. The global star Network is awful. It takes forever for the device to even find a satellite even in clear sky. I thought I was going to be able to communicate with my family easily but all the spot X did was create headaches. Next year I will be trying the Garmin inreach. A friend of mine on the same hunt had a Garmin inreach and those messages sent almost instantly. The Iridium satellite network is much more reliable than the global star. I'm telling you people do not waste your money I bought the spot because it was cheaper than the competitors. And I had a feeling I was going to regret it and I do. I'm not saying the Garmin inreach is going to be the perfect device at the Iridium satellite Network much more reliable for sure.

A Must Have For Outdoor Adventures & Emergencies

My daughter and I have fallen in love with hiking and camping and we love to venture out to the East End of Ling Island to visit some of the state parks that are out there for their hiking trails. I love the SpotX as it is the perfect tool for helping me to feel safe in these parks as sometimes we can venture a bit far and get lost and it is nice knowing that we can get help in emergency situations like that. This device is a must have for all households in my eyes... but especially lovers of the great outdoors. Even if there is no cell service... this devise will get emergency texts to my husband via Satellite and that is super reassuring! You can sync up to 7 contacts with this device too and for me I love that in the event of emergency... the device has all of my medical info available like my prescriptions and such...just in case I am in need of medical help. Super cool and cannot wait to use this all summer long as we have lots of trips planned in upstate NY.

My Safety net for hikes

Just had a baby and making time to work out has been tough. There is a great but very woodsy trail out behind my job that I decided to hike on during my lunch break. I am not very familiar with the area in general and am a bit afraid to get lost. I found that using the SPOT makes sure I am safe to get help if my travels lead me astray. It’s easy to use, and I love that it keeps a charge for many days (about a week with once a day for 45 mins of use) so I can leave it in my gym bag and not charge until the weekend. My aging eyes also appreciate it’s easy to read and large font.

Thankfully only my ride depended on this device.

This product is TERRIBLE! I bought this for a section hike on the AT. Really had no use for it until the day I was to be picked up. Due to a miscommunication with my driver, we were on opposite sides of the area we were supposed to meet. I spent 4 hours trying to get a signal... I met up with someone who had the Garmin InReach... no issues at all. I was in touch with my shuttle in minutes. Tech Support claims to be 24 hours, however when I called this morning, per the automated system, no one was in, call back later. Cancellation online does not actually allow you to cancel. You can select why you want to cancel, however, the only button available after that is "Keep My Subscription." Thankfully REI is amazing and I was able to exchange this for the InReach.

Terrible! Buy a Garmin instead!

I have owned this for 3 years. Previously it worked okay in the Rockies. However, last week in the Wind River Range of Wyoming it did not work at all relative to receiving messages. I updated all the software before the trip as usual. The issue was I could send but not recieve any replies from texts to Verizon and AT&T cell phones. I also could not receive texts that went to gmail or icloud. Having used the device for several seasons it *used* to work just fine with those carriers. Interestingly, I could send and receive from my buddy’s Garmin satellite system. There is really no recourse except to cancel the service and buy another product.

Great lifesaving addition to my kit

I'm pleased with Spot X so far. There are quite a few who mention connectivity "spottiness" (no pun intended). While it can take a bit to send and receive, it usually works just fine. I tested it out in some remote areas of the Mojave Preserve as well as some backcountry washes and canyons in Death Valley. The recipient got each message sent and I received each reply. It is an excellent, and potentially lifesaving, item. The plans are affordable and varied to suit most needs. This isn't a cellphone and isn't intended to be. It's a tool. One that has quickly become a valued addition to my kit.

Great for trail-riding

My family enjoys snowmobiling in the winter, and large groups of us ride the snowmobile trails in Wisconsin's Northwoods. Cell service can be pretty spotty up there, especially on the trails, and the Spot X gave us peace of mind on this last trip, knowing that we could contact anyone if need be. The built in compass became really helpful when we hit a trail that we were not familiar with. It allowed us to be able to figure out where were were, so we could just hop on a different trail back to our end destination for that day.

Still Not Great

My third Spot device (call me a slow learner). The original first gen spot was pretty good for what it did at the time. When I transitioned to Connect is when the real problems started. It was notoriously difficult to connect to my iPhone. I switched to this thinking no Bluetooth connection was required so what could go wrong. I had consistent issues trying to sync it with my account. I could get the latest firmware in only a couple tries, but syncing wouldn’t happen. A few calls to Spot support only brought renewed instructions on how to sync. It’s not a difficult process, it just doesn’t work. I’ve given up on them ever putting out a great product with great service.

Spot X Messenger

This is a satellite device, please remember that. You really have to be outside in order for it to work reliably. When setting it up we wanted to try it out but did not realize it wouldn't send messages in doors. If you are hoping it is a everywhere-Blackberry'ish device. It's not. It gives people a way to reach you (and you them) in a semi-reasonable amount of time when in deep woods or unreachable locations otherwise. It also does a stellar job of tracking and reporting your outdoor location. Even if you can't message you can go on the app and find the location of the device. Battery life is reasonable although I don't think it'll run 10 days 24x7 with tracking at 10 minutes. So take a solar battery if you're going to be off-grid. We don't have this issue because we use it hiking, fishing and just charge it when we get back from our trip.

Cool features but did not work for me in the field

I would not rely on the Spot X in an emergency. Loaded with features but function in the field was not good. Based on my experience the Spot X requires a WIDE OPEN space in order to transmit/receive. Used on a hike yesterday in a location with trees but plenty of open sky and the Spot could not send a message. In the same location, the Spot X navigation/compass function would not respond. I had a Garmin GPS with me which indicated strong signal strength and on which compass and nav functions were working fine. I used a Spot Gen 3 for years and never had this problem. The Gen 3 has very limited features but always reliably sent messages. (Never had to use SOS.) Bottom line, Spot X a big disappointment.

Absolutely Horrible

I purchased this for a backpacking trip in Colorado. activated it, updated it like it instructed, paid the additional $90 for activation and one month's service. This think sucks! Do not buy! My buddy had a different kind and his worked perfectly. I would sit mine straight up in huge wide open spaces and walk back and forth every 20-30 minutes to see if my message had sent or if I had received anything. Also the 200+hour battery is a joke. I even turned off everything that would drain it faster. I wish I had checked the reviews. You will have better luck using smoke signals. Do Not Buy!!
