Love my backpack!
Sleek Sturdy bag, light weight, and able to take anywhere-hikes, vacation, weekend bag, and gym.
Great Airline Carry On
A quality product as usual. The only thing I would change is have D Rings sewn in for using a shoulder strap. I don’t use it as a backpack because I’m already wearing a backpack. Currently I’m using light lockable D rings clipped to the two backpack harness points but the bottom has to clip to the handle causing the bag to flip on its side with shoulder strap use. Not a deal breaker, just a minor inconvenience.
Indestructible, great bag
This is an odd review but I just have to let people know how indestructible this bag is. Of course I use all the books and crannies to pack. I do love the interior mesh pockets and the front pocket that enters the front also. And so much fits in. A five day camping trip’s necessities were packed in this. BUT one day I left it open and laying on the closet floor. That proved to be too much for my aging cat to ignore. So he promptly peed inside the bag, a LOT. I figured the bag was ruined so I washed it with cold water, soap and vinegar. Five more washes later and the odor was gone. I was shocked that the bag withstood so many washings! It’s not totally dry yet, and I will hang it outside in the shade to air dry. But this is phenomenal. I never thought to call Patagonia and ask what to do, probably should have, but this did the trick! It is truly indestructible and a joy to own. I pack it everywhere. None of its functionality is gone, smells nice, and is as clean as it can get. This is the best bag, these Black Hole bags. I love mine.
Closer to 30L
The build quality and features are five stars as you would expect from Patagonia, however unlike previous black hole duffles I own this bag is smaller than advertised. It is closer to 30L (see picture comparing to REI 30L ultralight duffle). The dimensions of this bag are supposed to be 21 x 13.7 x 10.6 but I measured the actual dimension to be 18 x 11 x 10
Great Gift
I have been on the edge of purchasing a bag for my field PPE (personal protective equipment) for construction sites... got the bag as a gift today! Fits boots, hard hat, vest, gloves, harness, lanyard and jacket! Basically a "bugout bag" for construction! Now I can grab one bag.... everything is in it and can put in my car or truck and off!
Fantastic for a 4-day trip as a carry-on
I took this duffel on a 4-day trip. For reference, I packed into this bag 5 days worth of light-weight clothings (t-shirts, 3 pairs of pants but no jeans, leggings, underwear and socks), pajamas, 2 light jackets, 1 thick sweater, 1 pair of sneakers, 1 pair of flip-flops, 1 large and fully stocked toiletry bag, 1 extra pouch for misc things, 2 glass cases, 1 swimsuit set and there was still a little extra room to spare. Carried this onto a small plane and I was not asked to gate check this duffel bag. Love the ability to use this as a backpack and it's perfect size for a small woman like me (5'4" and lightweight). I'm returning to purchase a larger size version - although that one may be too heavy for me to carry when fully packed.
Patagonia's Unique Geometry
First let me say with all these Black Hole Duffels, they seem to hold way-more than their rated capacity and competitors' products at the same size rating. I use this for climbing gym gear and Chose this one over North Face because the Patagonia has a satchel hand strap, whereas the Base Camp does not anymore. Aesthetically, these duffels look great; and temptation is to think they will not stand up to a beating. But this is my second, and I can vouch from the first that they are tough as nails. Plus they clean up nicely with a hose, a brush and some dishwashing detergent. I dragged #1 on the floor through O'Hare for a clong walk to my connection, brought it home, hosed it off and it looked pristine.
Upgrades from previous (45L) bag!
Really like the backpack strap option and that they are quick and easy to remove and conceal inside the bag. The lid on the 40L opens wider for better access to contents than the previous 45L bag. Inside the lid, the mesh pocket is only one compartment now with one zipper--previously there were two pockets. While this is marked as 40L, the previous 45L seems to be smaller in volume per external measurements. Is the numbering arbitrary? Seems like it may be. Regardless, great bag and awesome for carry-on with current dimension restrictions. Highly recommend, best if wait for the end-of-season sale to get it at discount price. Either way, though, it's worth the price.
Perfect for carry on: domestic or international
Bought this a number of months ago and have put it through the paces with weekender and international trips. While the medium North Face is just outside of the parameters this Patagonia fits the carry-on requirements for airlines. (To be fair it would take a picky gate agent to dong The North Face but to me it wasn’t worth the risk!as I fly a lot of commuter flights.) Why is it so good? It is water resistant, the backpack straps comfortable and seems to fit everything you need. Wish it had another compartment to separate things but not a deal killer.
I'll tell you why it's worth 5 stars!
This bag is style, though not the most comfortable to carry as a backpack. Working with only 2 pockets can be a blessing and a curse. You just have to accept buying this bag, you're running pretty minimal. There are honestly more comfortable options for this price range. This bag IS worth 5 stars because for a traveler such as myself, it's a blessing! Its the biggest bag I've been able to find that can be slid under an airplane seat (some kicking may be required). I don't have to get out of my chair to grab something minimal. It's always within reach. This luxury alone is worth the rating.
